I called to check a few things on the phone before booking my reservation. They were very nice, polite, but were not forth coming with how this place works. The price is outrageous. Especially when many of the advertised features have been closed for a while. There are no designated camping spots and from what I can tell, they don't really seem to have any cap to reservations. We arrived at 755 am, yesterday, holiday weekend. Check in 8 am. There were about 6 cars in line but it took about 10-15 minutes to check in because of how slow they are to check people in. Then we drove in anticipation from zone 1 all the way to zone 9 looking for a spot, somewhere to camp, set up, relax, and enjoy the weekend. No such luck. Dozens and dozens and dozens of people every where. No marked camping spots. People camped on rocks, up against the mountain, in the creek bed, all over the place. People on top of each other, tent to tent. We left, and we know we were out the $ but we wanted some place to unwind and relax and this seemed like major stress and chaos. When we drove out there were another 10 cars in line waiting to check in. I have no idea where they were going to find a camping spot. Lesson learned to make sure that when you have a reservation for camping that you actually have and actual designated camping spot.

It was very easy to book ahead online and pay for our daily parking pass once we checked-in. The campsite itself is tucked into the forest, very high up on Palomar Mountain. We found it easy to park our one SUV at our campsite and pitch our tents. The sites do have water, tables, and food boxes. The bathrooms were kept quite nice and tidy. We were all very impressed with the simple but clean and well maintained facilities. We did do a dog friendly hike that starts in the Doane Valley Campground and it's about 4 miles round trip. We had a lovely hike with a decent amount of incline along with beautiful weather. They also have a lovely stop/view area at the beginning of the campgrounds with picnic tables. Palomar mountain is great for camping, hiking, a nice Sunday cruise up the mountain for the beauty, etc. Cell phone service is spotty up there so make sure to either download your map ahead of time or use satellite service.

Take 76 and S Grade Road instead. Phone reception is limited on the mountain. I strongly suggest downloading maps before you visit. The park headquarters is quite small and it doesn't seem like it is continually staffed. Make sure you have plenty of fuel. Bring lots of water. Keep in mind that it may be hotter on the mountain than the temperature at sea level. We didn't see any potable water during a recent visit. As long as you're well-prepared, you will enjoy this beautiful park. Have fun and stay safe.

We realized after our first night that the spot was not going to work for us, it was too small for our travel trailer and large truck. We went to the onsite office and asked about changing spots. The three ladies in the office didn't hesitate and immediately went to work looking for a larger spot for us. They did, spot #104. And not only did they allow us to move, they didn't charge us the difference for the remaining 3 nights. Customer Service is alive and well here at Escondido RV Resort! Thank you ladies for making our stay a great one!

Miguel is the coolest fellow and SUPER hard worker (maint) and Jose does a good job too. The sites are incredible (esp up on the terrace) plenty wide enough and length-appropriate, with lush greenery and GREAT SHADE. I have had great neighbors (seemed to be near some other 'longer-term' peeps) and the ebb and flow of the weekenders made for an entertaining time. IF my job brings me back to Escondido next spring, I will DEF be staying with Chris and Stacy again!!
