I came here as a first-time client and was really surprised by the experience, especially for a salon that charges $200 for a single process. After my color was washed out, the colorist never checked on the final result. No one came over to see how the color turned out or make sure I was happy with it, which felt careless and unprofessional. Then, when the assistant asked, "Do you want to blow dry a little?" I said yes, assuming a stylist would handle it. Instead, I was brought to a station and handed a hair dryer brush with no explanation -- and told to do it myself. I do not recommend! Long thick hair ended up short and thinned out with an entirely new style that I never asked for. I asked for a slight adjustment to a slightly uneven cut that I had just had being very clear I wanted to keep my long length and fullness and liked the current style I had. Stylist kept assuring me we would go through the entire process together and wouldn't touch the length. I also said I did not want it thinned out at all. He said ok. When he started cutting the length he said "don't worry I'm just evening it out, I am barely touching it". Then he started in on the layers. He kept checking in and I was very vocal about everything we discussed and what I wanted and he just kept saying don't worry it's nothing I've barely touched it. This went on and on and I continued to remind him I don't want my hair shorter or thinned out. Then he grabbed the thinning scissors and I thought he would just use them to make the ends less blunt (though not sure why he was touching my ends since it was just cut) and before I could speak he was thinking out chunks of hair until I finally said that's it no more. And he went to grab more hair to cut and I said do not cut anymore. When he blow dried it I mentioned it was very short and I looked physically distressed and he said "I do extensions too" and though he was partially joking it really put me off even more. I had such long thick hair and now have a mid-cut with shoulder length layers. He took minimum 2 inches off PLUS cut into it thinning it out so much. He kept saying I would love it by the evening and instead I got home and cried. I also have curly hair so when I washed and air dried it it falls even shorter. My hair is short and thinned out. I've been growing it out for two years just to go back to square one. I am writing this review because it's not right that stylist take it upon themselves to do WTF they want especially when a client is so clear with their wants. I'm furious and unfortunately there is nothing that can be done but wait another two years to achieve the length I am used to. Not ok. read more

I have been going to Valerie Joseph every week since the end of Covid for hair cut, color, blow dry, manicure, pedicure and occasional wax. I love the work that Henry does with my hair, and I love Julies manicure. I also occasionally gift my friends daughters with hair cut, color, and nails. I think the regular receptionist Teresa is outstanding with respect to organization and friendly and laid back atmosphere in the salon. Normally, I would give the salon five stars. The reason why I am giving the salon one star is first, the inability of the salon to handle a simple situation when my manicurist didn't come in for my gel manicure and pedicure appointment (Teresa would have simply apologized and rescheduled me) and second, how the substitute receptionist Althea basically blamed me for exacerbating this snafu. Althea said as a favor to me, someone, not a manicurist, would be able to remove my gel manicure (I had given up on the pedicure because even though I said I was willing to reschedule, come back, or wait, apparently these things weren't possible) The woman who removed the manicure was very nice, but I had unfortunately forgotten that the nails look white and scratched when gel is removed. The problem arose be I asked if there was something opaque to cover. After she applied opaque polish, Althea was visibly upset and verbally chastised me for asking for a manicure without checking with her first. I was so taken aback, because honestly, it unfortunately didn't occur to me that a coat of opaque polish was that big a deal. I also felt terrible that the woman who helped me also seemed to be getting into some trouble for taking the time to help me out. I apologized sincerely to Althea several times, which in my mind, should have been the end of it. And, I was getting a bit aggravated be no one had apologized to me that the services I had booked weren't available. But she reluctant to take my repeated apologies, and she also didn't seem to want to take my request for my usual following weeks appointments. I left feeling like I had ruined her schedule and her day, and that my business wasn't wanted. This makes me very sad, bc I love the salon. My mother in law has terminal cancer, and sometimes spending time at Valery Joseph is the highlight of my week. I would highly recommend this salon so long as the schedule is running smoothly and the regular receptionist Teresa is at the helm. The professionals are among the most talented in NY and ver nice. I'm honestly not sure what I will do now for salon services, but I'm debating cancelling my appts if Teresa isn't there. The issue is i purchased a series of services. read more

Last week I went to my usual stylist who gave me a cut that was not good. They tried to fix it but unfortunately it just has to grow and I am stuck with choppy uneven layers for the next few months. What I am most upset about is how cruel and rude the owner of the salon was. She has a major attitude, was not apologetic and offered me little in way of trying to make my experience better. My stylist is very nice and talented, but sadly due to how rude the owner was I will not be back. I have never ever encountered such bad customer service. Update and response to you Roy: Your salon gave me a gift card for the COLOR ( which was nothing special) only when I declined the appt as it is double standard price ( most places are $ 90-100 for a single process not $200). I never complained about the color. I asked for a refund on the cut because it needs to be done again, and the mistakes cannot be fixed. That should not happen for the price of the cut and the quality salon you claim to be. I have an appt for a corrective cut so I'm not looking for a "free haircut". And it was not about getting the money back. The owner was completely unprofessional and cruel. Honestly, had I been treated better, and the owner not been so mean, Id go back to the stylist. Beware of this Salon. It is extremely overpriced with terrible customer service. Here's what happened. While doing a Keratin treatment the stylist asked me if I wanted a quick trim. It took less than 10 min and she didn't do any styling. They charged me an extra $250 for that! To be fair the stylist did a good job, but I felt totally scammed. I've gone to Valery Joseph 4 or 5 times. I've had high lights with Lauren and recently 2 balyage ...Lauren really gets the blond color right, and I leave happy.It's never 100% perfect, but she does it better than the 10 other colorists I've tried all over the city for the past 20 years... I blow it dry myself, and get my cut elsewhere, but if you want blonde highlights, I recommend Lauren. read more

Review: Valery Joseph Salon 2: I would not go back again. The staff was friendly. However the girl washing the hair did not have a smile on her lips and was rather annoyed. Further it took forever getting my hair cut. I have short hair In total I spent almost three hours in there. I don't know how often he checked my hair if the cut was okay or if he still has to cut. He even hair blowed my hair twice to take a look! All in all too expensive for what you get. However Tohmas, the colour specialist, was great and knew what he was doing. I was really skeptical about visiting this salon because of the reviews, but I am newly moved into the neighborhood and needed a quick blowdry for an interview. I called up and said that I needed a last min appointment and needed to rush in immediately and they said to come on in. When I arrived I was greeted by a pleasant young lady at the desk. I was immediately taken to the sink and offered a beverage... The service was quick efficient and I was out of there in 45min! I even got a manicure during my blowout which made my life easier since i had about an hr to get to my interview. I had a good experience and look forward to going back again... I had an appointment that I initially needed to push back to due a medical appointment, which i called and did. It turned out i got some really bad news about my health and had to take care of some things immediately. I cancelled my appointment and was told to call back another day to reschedule. 2 days after the appointment was scheduled i was CHARGED over 300 dollars to my DEBIT card. Which means it will take WEEKS to clear this whole thing up. This salon had NO AUTHORIZATION to charge my card. I dont even know how they had my debit card number. I wasnt planning to pay with that card and it was NOT their decision to make. I think it is ABSURD that no one told me there would be a charge for cancelling, let alone a $300 charge for services not rendered. Had they told me, I would have figured something out OR asked to speak to a salon manager and asked for them to please understand my situation and perhaps make an exception for me. I was never given that opportunity. No one called me. No one asked my permission. I will be filing a claim and my bank will be dealing with them from this point on. It is a major inconvenience though. I will NEVER go back. It is such a shame because all of my friends and my entire family were frequent cilents at Valery Joseph. I didnt mind paying the exorbitant prices for the decent services but now I am dealing with this bank situation on top of my current health issues. I have never felt so taken advantage of by a merchant. Ive spoken to two other Upper East Side women and have learned that they had the SAME PROBLEM. Bad business. read more

Color (blonde highlights) totally fine but nothing to write home about. Really mediocre cut (if you can call it that) from the girl who was meant to dry it and said oh let me trim it a bit first. Then slapped me with a $300 bill for a cut. Crazy! I didn't complain - I just mentioned to the guy that cashed me out that she didn't really cut my hair, just trimmed the front a tiny bit and he just shrugged and said "a cut is a cut". My mother and I have been clients of Bergdorf Goodman's John Barrett salon for many years (a significantly more expensive salon than Valery Joseph.) I branched out to Valery Joseph for blow drys because it is in my neighborhood. I have never had such a disgustingly bad experience at a salon. They talked me into doing extensions, which were removed with Purel hand sanitizer- literally. As a correction to that mistake, they offered to do the extensions "free of charge," excepting the cost of the hair, which I agreed to. They proceeded to charge me for color, because I was told that you cannot use more than one color extension in your hair (I had never heard this before.) I agreed, the colorist was unable to make a significant change in color because the extensions used were too dark. I paid for it anyway, and in the end had a few lighter extensions put in, which looked fine, and should have been done in the first place, without wasting the time and money on the color. I went back to have the extensions removed after 10 weeks. The owners wife, and receptionist, Revi, decided that the process was no longer "free of charge" and told me I would be charged $200 per hour for removal. I have never dealt with such a disgustingly rude person, especially someone who is working FOR me. What a pathetic way to run a business. If you are considering wasting your time, money, and patience at a Valery Joseph salon--think again. Unless you like being treated like trash, by trash. read more
