Ajoarriero used to be one of Ernest Hemingway's favorite dishes while he lived in Pamplona. It is a dish of bacalao (dried cod fish) that is mixed with tomatoes, garlic, potatoes and peppers. Crêpes de atún con espárragos is tuna salad in a crepe with white asparagus tips stuffed in. A beautiful and very filling pinxto. For a spicy tapa we had anchoa rellena de fritada which has spicy green peppers on top of filet of anchovie. As you sit outside on the street where the bulls run during the festival of San Fermin, you can drink your beer or wine and imagine what it may be like to be with Hemingway, since nothing has changed in the neighborhood since before that era.

The bar staff is super knowledgeable, especially the lead bartender Kamil, and the signature cocktails are some of the best I've ever had - and I'm from NYC! As amazing as the food and wine scene in San Sebastian is (and it's 100% world class) - it's actually almost impossible to find a decent cocktail. We lucked onto Alkimia based on a local friend's recommendation and were absolutely blown away. Do yourself a favor, start or end the night with a drink at the best real cocktail bar in San Sebastian - you won't be sorry!

If you're lucky, the Californian proprietor will get out his harmonica and wail. Interesting selection of food, including curries and more traditional fare. Besides tapas you can get whole meals as well as raciones of course. There are tables inside, some outside as well. But without reservation they are mostly taken. Wait for one to clear....or do what most do: Take your food and drinks across the street. There's a nice Promenade where you can sit anywhere on the wall. We did exactly that. Got some tapas with crab meat, with jamon & foie gras, with tuna & anchovies, pulpo & potatoes, salmon & sardines, smoked fish, shrimp and of course our favorite: Foie Gras with apple sauce! Also some raciones: crab (in shell) and fried calamari. They've got a good selection of wines for all budgets. Muga is always a good and safe choice. Food here is really excellent. Great combinations, freshly made, high quality products. And for really fair prices. It takes a bit time and patience to order at the bar inside, because it's mostly very busy. But that's understandable and well worth your time. It was and still is the best Tapas Bar we know. Highly recommended - and we will definitely be back!
