Each time, the staff assured me that Dr. Kumar would handle it. He never did. Despite repeated calls and clear communication about the urgency, the prescription was not refilled before he left town. Because of this failure, I was left without essential medication for about 10 days, causing needless pain, stress, and disruption to my daily life. The office staff were consistently difficult to reach, and when I did manage to get through, I felt they showed little compassion or urgency in addressing a very real medical need. I filed a complaint with the California Medical Board regarding this incident, and I have written confirmation that the complaint is currently under review. This experience was unacceptable, and I hope it helps others choose their care providers wisely.

Possibly reduce or eliminate the narcotics if there was new medications available. I've been on the same medication ans program for the last 15 yr and I'm functional. I made this clear to the provider at Universal and they made a suggestion to try Subutex. I picked it up and followed directions on waiting to start it. Took the first 3 doses 12 hr apart as prescribed. I was very uncomfortable it was not managed my pain. This was the weekend so I was going to call Monday to talk about adjusting the medication as they had said. When I took the 4th dose I had a very bad reaction, felt like I went into full withdrawal. Vomit, hit,cold shakes and headaches for over 2 hr. I was on the verge of calling 911 but got through it. If this had happened when driving or at work I'd have lost my job!!! I called the office first thing Monday ( about 2 hr after the bad reaction, I was still sick). The receptionist would not allow me to speak with any provider to get information about whether I should take the next dose or increase or what to do!!! She wanted to schedule me for an appointment next Avalon about a week !! I pleaded with her that I needed advice on what to do with the meds and what would be safe. She started getting short with me and said just go to urgent care. When I agreed with the provider to make the change she told me we might have to make adjustments but then I can't talk to them. !! I ended up within g another 12-15 hr to start to feel withdrawal again and the started my old meds at 1/2 dose for the first 2 12 hr because I was worried about how they would hit me with the subutex in my system. I took the day off work because I can not go through that at work. I would never recommend universal pain if this s how they operate. I've been in pain management for decades and never been treated this way 0 STARS!!!

Dr. Lo respected my decision to avoid opioid medication and thoughtfully recommended alternative treatments for my back pain. Eventually, the cause of my pain was identified as a birth defect requiring surgery, and his guidance throughout this journey has been invaluable. The entire staff at this office is knowledgeable and supportive. They always respond promptly to MyChart messages or phone calls, and I'm consistently seen on time. On the rare occasions when delays arise due to circumstances beyond their control, they always communicate updates about wait times. I've never felt unwelcome or like a nuisance while at the office--it's truly a warm and professional environment. Dr. Lo now has Ryan, PA, assisting him with patients, and he's a fantastic addition to the team. Like Dr. Lo, Ryan is empathetic, approachable, and equally committed to providing excellent care.
