Loyola University Medical Center - Hospital entrance

    Loyola University Medical Center

    (307 reviews)

I want to be very honest with this review of Loyola University Medical Center…read more We arrived on Easter Sunday night after being transferred from another hospital, and I was truly grateful we made it. The ICU staff on the 2nd floor were exceptional--kind, professional, and attentive. They consistently checked on us and treated both patients and family with care and respect during a very difficult time. However, after a few days, we were moved to the 3rd floor, and the experience changed significantly. During overnight hours--around 2 AM--the environment has been surprisingly loud. I heard staff using profanity, watching videos or news on their phones at high volume, and openly complaining about long shifts. I understand healthcare is demanding, but this is a hospital setting, and patients (and their families) can hear everything. My relative is here receiving end-of-life care, so I stay overnight. At one point, a nurse questioned my presence rather abruptly before knowing the situation. To her credit, she apologized once she understood, but in moments like these, a little more compassion upfront goes a long way. One of the nurse was rude and jist keep using profanity and stated this is who she is. Wow, Loyola use to have professional nursing staff, what happened? I also noticed interactions where staff spoke to patients in a very casual, sometimes inappropriate tone. Maybe I'm a bit old-fashioned, but professionalism matters--especially in a place where people are vulnerable, grieving, and trying to find peace. My takeaway: There is clearly a strong, compassionate team here--as seen in the ICU--but consistency matters. Professionalism, awareness, and respect should be maintained across all floors, especially during overnight hours. Hospitals should feel calm and supportive, not loud or chaotic. Patients and families deserve that--especially during life's most difficult moments. I will give a 4 star due to our first encounter here and the kindness nurses such as Nicole and Quand and Jordan. Very kind d and attentive. And I just heard 2 nurses use profanity to another nurse. I am sincerely flabbergasted that they speak like this so openly and there are patients present in their rooms. The level of unprofessionalism is amazing, and i am really saddened by this as this hospital was once top hospital. Being part of the joint commission will definitely reflect not only my review, but how I move forward. This is really upsetting me.

They could have told us that on the phone and saved us a 6 mile trip but it's loyola and they don't do anything to make your visit pleasant. They would not even let her sit in the lobby. We had to turn around and leave. I don't know why this hospital is so terrible, not family friendly, it's a shame. Terrible hospital. I need my ppo insurance again so I can attend Northwestern where they treat you like a valuable human.

I experienced this in General Internal medicine. Too many side conversations about outside work. Not enough checking patients in quickly and courteously. Today, my mother called the office because my grandma urgently needed to be seen due to her condition. Instead of being helped, she was spoken to extremely rudely by Dr. Barnes' male nurse, Joe (who conveniently didn't provide his last name). He was cocky, disrespectful, raised his voice, and acted completely unprofessional and sarcastic throughout the call. He told my mom to "just take her to the ER" -- even after she explained that my grandma can't sit upright, let alone wait for hours at an ER. Then, to make matters worse, he lied in the medical notes, falsely claiming my mom was being aggressive on the phone -- a complete fabrication. She simply advocated for her dying mother and asked why she wasn't being taken seriously. This nurse clearly lacks empathy, and rather than offering help, he escalated the situation and deflected blame, saying things like: "The doctor sees 5,000 patients. Take her to the ER." ...as if that justifies refusing care. Bottom line: Patients deserve better -- especially terminal ones. This isn't how you treat families fighting for their loved ones' care. Joe should not be in a position of care. He's the reason people lose faith in healthcare professionals.

Two highly enthusiastic thumbs up!…read more I saw Dr. Jones today to ask about getting my tonsils removed. I've seen a lot of doctors in my life, and this might just have been my best doctor visit ever. Dr. Jones has the kindest demeanor you could ask for, and was extremely thorough in the warnings and information he gave me about the procedure. I actually felt like he listened to me and genuinely cared about my concerns and about my health. This is the kind of doctor you always wish you had. I'm actually kind of excited to come back for my surgery in January! How often can you say that?!? In short, if you're looking for an ear nose and throat doctor who is kind and competent and will treat you like a human being, look no further. This is your guy.

I did ask him why since we had CT Scans why couldn't just look at that. He runs up the bill with charges we were not aware of. He will not return all phone calls. His office states the doctor has no idea that there are charges for various procedures. I'm questioning if this is a violation of the False Claims Act but Dr. Jones has not returned my calls to discuss this.

My son was a patient there and he is not the same person anymore. Now he feels like a burden. He apologizes for sneezing. His basic needs were not met. When he came home after only five days, his nails were long and his ears were disgusting. Even if you bring them something, they don't receive it. Everyone was shivering at night with only the thinnest blanket. So we brought him one. He never got it. Everyone's skin was dry so we brought him lotion. He never got it. Now, he has cracked skin around his genitals. He stutters severely now and he hasn't stuttered in years. He was punched in the face by a bully and not even given ice. That same bully left a scar on my son's leg. He asked an inappropriate question and had to stay an extra day. I am relieved he was not sexually assaulted. I think that would break me. But if you Google Riveredge and "lawsuits," your heart will break for what you will learn. I am appalled that ER hospitals would even think of sending someone to this establishment. I truly believe my son would have been better off in prison. In prison you are not freezing at night. In prison you get hot food, not cold slop. In prison, you won't get sick from drinking the expired milk. In prison you do not have intravenous medicine injected in your a$$ for any reason. In prison, you do not stay an extra day for asking an inappropriate question. This place should burn and the sadistic staff should be put in prison. Except for one person who was kind. The others should rot in hell.
