One of the worst VA's we have ever had to deal with. This past time my husband waited for over 2 hours before going up to the desk and asking when he would be in to see the doctor for his scheduled appt two hours beforehand and they said they "accidentally" forgot about him and that they no longer have time to deal with him that day and the next appointment is in 2 months time. I guess this is a recurring theme in Memphis.. medical offices forgetting about patients even after they check in and get their BP taken. This is the 2nd time this has happened in a week now, just this time it's the VA. Absolutely ridiculous and unacceptable. They also gave him capcasin cream for his severe knee deterioration from his deployments... icy hot for knees... for a veteran.... The Memphis Va is a research and teaching and learning facility, not a healthcare facility for Veterans. Veterans cannot even use an extension whether a one is added before the extension or not. Unanswered phone calls from clinics, operators never answer phone. No followup. Getting anything done regarding care is sporadic. Parking is a nightmare! read more

I had a concern regarding my parent. I was refered to the social worker on Nonconnah. The assigned social worker gave me directions and said he will call back the next day. When I did not hear back within the promised day, I was unable to reach him regarding the urgent matter. When I called the VA back to see who I need to talk to , Dr. Dan called me with an extremely rude behavior and told me to stop calling the social worker. When I told her that I am concerned about my parent, she said that she does not have anything to do with the matter. When I asked her if there is a place or agency that may direct me further or assist, in order to provide assistance to my elderly parent, she said that she does not know and that I can see an attorney. To me the role of a social worker is to assist in the needs of the patient. When I called the agent commission, they immediately offered assistance and provided me with a list of agencies that may provide assistance. read more

Just when you think it can't get any worse at this VA Hospital, it does. I had to take my Dad here yesterday to the emergency room because he cant go to the bathroom. Or when he does, he only goes a little. So, I knew this was an urgent matter so when we got there I told them the problem. That he can't go to the bathroom because he has not had a circumcision when younger and this is because it is closing up down there. We got there at 1pm and they began to see others as the waiting room was full. At about 3pm my Dad noticed they were seeing patients that came after us. What! After about another hour I noticed this was true. Truth in matter: A Doctor Ray in the emergency room confirmed this with us about about 4:30 as I asked her that my Dad thinks others are being seen that came in after us. She said "Yes, others have more urgency matters". There was about 50 people in there waiting to be seated and statistics proves that not all them have more urgent matters than someone who can't pee but has to. How would she like not being able to go to the bathroom and can't. I bet she would feel like "not going to the bathroom" is of utmost importance and how would she feel if it was her. Anyway, it was horrible as they saw us last. I mean cleared out the waiting room until we were the only ones in there. Then, after finally being called back to a room. The doctor starts inserting a catheter in my Dad without giving him a pain killer. He hollers and screams in pain as this is being done. Then, the doctors finally decide to give my Dad a shot of pain killers after they hurt him bad. Now, why didn't they do this in the first place. This just proves how selfish people or Doctors can be to others and how bad they treat others and their relatives and not give a care in the world at this so called VA Hospital emergency room. read more

Had an Appointment on 1/12/21 @ 1000 am, got there at 915, Was stopped at gate that entire parking area on west was closed?. Also parking Garage closed everyone had to park on the east side so here are lets say 500 looking for parking and only 300 slots. Really so I parked of site finally and was of course late to my Appointment. Yes this is the great VA taking care of the veteran. I really feel the Memphis VA is the WORST VA I have ever dealt with. Some of the employees are great and some would not help you if your life depended on it. The parking situation has to be the biggest CF I have ever seen. I am now starting withdrawals from no Anxiety medication. Not the first time.North Clinic has been no help. I requested Nitro Patch refills over a week ago and still waiting. 7 stents and a coil in my arteries. Sterns Cardiology put me on blood thinners due to the stents. I asked for a refill and no one at the VA knew if I needed them are not. They had to call Sterns to be told I needed it for the rest of my life. The Chief of Cardiology said he could fix my heart with pills. A letter to the White House got me to Sterns which saved my life. Now the VA says they'll take care of my heart. Who would trust them after what they put me through? read more

Today is the first time for me to ever have to check in VA Emergency room. I checked in at 5 with severe adominal pains! Its now 8:30 and I have yet to see a Doctor. This is when it sucks to be a Vet and why I dread getting sick and trusting in the VA for treatment. This isnt right! read more

VA Memphis My husband went to the ER twice within a week for his back. The 2nd trip to the ER, the ER doctor states his primary care doctor, Dr. Snell receives an notification of his ER visits and should contact you. He has yet to be contacted and I have called 30x in an attempt to reach someone from the office. I've been given several exts with no luck (6294, 6298, 5839, 6498, & 6923) I've called back to customer are with no luck of reaching anyone. My husband who is also a police officer cannot even walk to the bathroom without my help. It takes 10 minutes to get to the bathroom. This is sad read more

I am disappointed with all the one star reviews, the hospital does not deserve them. The staff is friendly and they work extra hard. And Parking? What is the obsession with parking? Come prepared with driver and all is solved. If you want to be angry with someone, look to our President who doesn't support veterans and a lame Congress who just follows his lead. They are great with giving tons of money for expensive gadgets but when it comes to helping the individual soldier we get the leftovers. Memphis has plenty of problems but it does no good to bellyache in public. Write your Congressman, at least your bellyaching to the right person. read more

I'm giving one star because you can't go lower. I am a disabled combat vet and they give no fucks about vets. The minute you are discharged they say fuck you but you can get some of the best healthcare in the world while you are in. It was another more than 1 hour wait for an appointment today. My first clue was the office lights turned off, the staff left and I was roaming the halls asking for anyone that could help. Yes, this was the VA Memphis Urology (which is the same thing that has happened in Cardiology) and although they will profess apologies left and right, they are simply double booking and not making any effort to mitigate circumstances, "they are short handed". Then quite double booking for all doctors! Duh! Today it took me 1 hour to drive to the VA, it took me 20 minutes to process through Cardiology (including EKG, BP, and doc visit). I went from there to Urology where I checked in 20 minutes early (they show only I showed up on time) and waited 1 hour until suddenly the lights in check in went out, doors closed and I was left in semi darkness waiting for my appointment. After roaming the halls, I found the Doc who said "oh, yeah you were the next one I was gonna call".....right? After m;y 3 minute appointment of no change, no new meds, thanks alot, I was referred to "Paula" the head of nursing for Urology who suggest in the future to complain to the desk help after an hour of waiting to let them know your are late. Riiiigggghhhhttt. I would have done that, but they left! Now add that I am sitting in the parking lot before leaving so upset that I'm taking nitro for angina from the stress of #1 driving to and from the VA on the Hwy40/240 raceway and #2 the way they make you feel when you come for help. They never understand why my BP is elevated when I arrive. Parking is horrible! It was horrible before the renovations started and now it's worse! There is no real assistance from anyone helping to load or unload, give direction, offer a wheel chair or anything that would make it easier to get help for a sick or injured person. The waiting room is a disorganized joke. The only reason I give it one star is because the waiting room was fairly clean. The triage staff is very dismissive. I'm sure it's because they are slammed with question concerning the long wait. The wait time is measured in hours. I was there with my father for more than 7 hours and that was just to get a room in the ER, the doctor still had not seen him in all that time. The nurses and other staff in the back were loud and complaining about their work...who wants to hear that when you're sick or injured. Still waiting while writing this review...a change in administration has done nothing....the Veterans Administration needs to do better! read more

I don't understand why people are so hard on this hospital. It going thru renovation and yes it is kinda a PITA but the staff are very professional and caring. These people literally saved my life and for that I will always be grateful. They are over worked and under appreciated. I was there for a week and listened to all kinds of abuse they went thru from patients and family members. Yet they stayed on mission and smiled. Wow was I wrong!! The Dr and Nurses ARE professional. However, the admin staff are absolutely useless and unprofessional. I sent the whole day up there to get a simple form signed. No one knew or cared. The next part is hard for me to say as I am white but most of the people working there obviously do not care for white people. YES they are very racist. I watched this occur many times. I was a traveling vet staff at Pharmacy and Eligibility was very helpful and friendly. Service was fast. The only negative was the parking. Valet was full so you were on your own. It was a mad house. It took 20 min. to park. Please build another parking garage. read more

This review is for parking only. The staff is great and I have no problems with the employees. Parking is a "HUGE" problem. My appointment at the new women's clinic building was at 10:45am. I drove around for 30 minutes in 3 parking areas trying to find a parking spot along with numerous other people. There is just not enough parking here! I finally just drove up to the women's building and ran inside to let them know that I was here but trying to find parking. I ended up parking in front of the women's building per the receptionist who said that she will talk with any security that comes by. Luckily when I left my truck was fine. The staff here are wonderful but parking is terrible. They really need a parking garage or adjacent parking. read more

My brother was admitted 3 days ago with stage 4 cancer. He was scheduled to start his first round of chemo but was too weak with high heart rate and low oxygen level. The care he has received here on the 2nd floor south has been exceptional. He is given the best of care along with Doctor's that really care about the patient and family. Every nurse on the floor is awesome. We are informed throughout the day on any test that has been performed as well as the staff asking several times if we need anything. As a matter of fact we are still here and would not change anything. Thank you V.A Hospital staff. read more

Is it possible to give a zero star? My daughters husband was a veteran with documented PTSD. Went to Memphis VA ED with inability to sleep and anxiety. His medicines had not arrived. Was told it was a medication issue and there was nothing they could do except refer him to mental health nurse. Her recommendation was to tell him to make appt with his psychiatrist. This occurred on Friday. On Saturday he died of a self inflicted gunshot wound to head after being up for days with inability to sleep and paranoia. If any healthcare personnel should be trained to recognize medical emergencies in a combat veteran with PTSD I feel it should be a VA medical center. My son in law lost his life and my daughters world is shattered. Our veterans and their families deserve better. Incidentally his medications that were "en route" on Friday arrived on Thursday July 18... 5 days after his unnecessary death. read more

I have been waiting for over eight hours to be seen. I feel worse now than when I got here. The VA should be ashamed of the service we receive here as Veterans. They have taken my vitals three times and I have been shifted to three different locations. Not one time have I seen a Doctor. This is the worst experience EVER and they should be FINED! Spent 5 days at the Memphis va. Open heart surgery on Friday and my lungs collapsed Saturday. The staff in intensive care are some of the best hospital staff Ive met. However, there are many problems that need solved. Toilets that dont work. Rooms with no privacy curtains. Executives that pay no attention to whats said to them. Dietary orders that aren't followed. Why serve someone who just had heart surgery meatball subs, potato chips, and sausage.I kind of think that goes against a no salt low fat diet. Why block off 50 percent of parking on weekends if your open for business? The sad part is with everything wrong at the hospital its miles better than the clinic in Dyersburg.Iknow of 10 veterans that refuse to step foot in that clinic. Rude receptionist, Team leads that refuse to return phone calls, leaky roof, broken floor tiles. Trash in the parking lot and yard. If you need an appointment you better go to the emergency room. Missy,the receptionist, has no problem being rude and acting like youre an idiot for wanting an appointment that's not 6 or 7 months away. read more

Most of the staff who works there are miserable and disrespectful. I've been going there since 2005 and I see mostly the same staff who treat you more as a number than a patient. My primary doctor basically asked me what do I want as far as drugs this place is unprofessional and corrupt just as much as the city of Memphis TN is. I'm in the process of changing doctors but the ones I have seen are not compassionate nor do they communicate with you or work in harm reduction. I have several chronic illnesses and disability when I did have insurance the private doctors and specialist are way better I guess you get what you pay for and for this facility since it is government funded and the doctors can't get a real job outside the va or their own practice they take it out on everyone else oh and one last thing I know these doctors write narcotics for each other if you've seen a doctor you know what I'm talking about they think they are GOD this place is evil most of the staff here do not like working and you will find that out for yourself.
