The Taiwanese Student Association (TSA) hosts this event every year which is largely popular with not only UW students, but also with the general Seattle public. I can imagine the complexity in coordinating such a large function, and overall I did enjoy my time here. However, I'm writing this review to pinpoint a couple things that, in our opinion, should be considered next time when planning to make it an even more enjoyable experience for everyone.
1. About 20+ food vendors are all packed around the perimeter of Red Square. Even though it's a large open space, with a crowd of thousands of people, it was difficult to get from one side to the other. One of the lines I waited in was easily 50+ people deep and others had no other choice than to walk through the line (and several other lines) to get across to the other side. This might not seem like a big deal, but it could have been avoided if they moved some vendors down closer to Mary Gates, Meany Hall or to The Quad. Less than half of The Quad was occupied and could have housed several vendors.
2. I realize the TSA may not have much control over this, but the pricing of the food is very steep, considering the serving sizes. For example, a spiced pork sandwich that was the size of an English muffin and just consisted of a think layer of chopped pork and bread, was $5. Four honey-walnut prawns with rice was $10.
3. I initially thought the Night Market would have more non-food vendors. In The Quad, there were a couple games and just two stalls that sold novelty items. I was hoping that there would be more stalls to browse... this market is extremely food-focused. Not a bad thing, just seemed like more of a food festival to me.
On the bright side, there definitely were aspects of this event that I found great and hope they continue to include in their planning for the future:
- Wide variety of food vendors, hot food, desserts and drinks
- Free bottles of Sparking ICE, provided by Talking Rain. It was a very warm night, so this was much appreciated.
- UW Police actively monitoring the area.
- Working outdoor sinks. These were probably for the Honey Buckets, but still, nice to have in general.
Although I would consider it worth visiting if you've never been before, I don't believe I'd be eager to come again next year, mainly due to the high pricing and extreme crowds. read more
