In the 80s and 90s the front of the park was the area where all the drunks and druggies use to hang out. Not anymore those days are over. If you see pictures of this park from the 80s to now you wouldn't believe your eyes. There is a baseball field with fake grass, handball/ basketball courts, Bathrooms(winter 2012), swings for the older kids/adults and swings for small children, dog run and a garden that Alex runs, multiple water fountains, and spray showers. There are some days that you cannot play in the field because the local high school has permits for the field. This was never the case until that school moved into town. The field used to have no grass on it and it was a little torn up but no one complained. I feel as if this park got fixed only because of the yuppies and the new building that was put up called onemurrypark. It's really sad that these changes didn't happen for the locals. The plus side is that no one has to try and work there way into the surrounding stores to try and go to the bathroom. I remember throughout the years people would have to go around the corner to my house just to go. Either way this park will always hold 5 stars because I lived here my whole life. Granted when you walk around the area you tend to not know anyone but at least the rich people moving into the area are nice because they see you as a potential babysitter. I recommend checking out the sculpture that is currently inside the dog run this piece is called "Bigger Bird".But check it out before it's too late because I read that there were plans that they were going to take it away since the dog run ruined it. Also now this park has traffic lights on every corner something the locals tried to get back in the day that suddenly sprung up as soon as the yuppies moved in, so that's a plus even though we are no longer children and can cross the street with no issue. This park is really big (2.524 Acres) and it is something that you should check out. Your kids will love it!

It has been a haven for outdoor everything (#1), an ideal spot for the youngins to unleash some energy, and is the site of the weekly Jackson Heights Greenmarket (#2). Named after the local community icon Thomas Travers, it was unveiled to the public in 1949. After a few facelifts in the past few decades, it's become one of the more utilized parks in the borough. Most recently there has been some serious renovation to improve the playground and the half acre of land known as Rory Staunton Field. Fast forward to 2022, it all looks lovely. At just over 2 acres, it's sizable for NYC standards. There are a lot of areas to lounge and lay out, a handful of chess tables, a sprawling kid's area, and plenty of benches to sit on. It's a great people watching area and is in the quieter part of the neighborhood; a stone's throw away from the congestion of Roosevelt Ave. In addition the farmer's market on the weekends, there has been Summer Sundays in the Park, which are seasonal performances put on by local Queens non-profits. This is one of the few places I'd recommend for folks to come check out on a casual weekend. Shop at the farmer's market, bring a dog or kids to play in the field, and enjoy a little (urban) outdoor time. _____________ (#1) Which has been a savior during the pandemic. Travers Park had a $7.1 million renovation during the Pandemic - and it completely shows! (Do NOT…read moreread any reviews of it before 2022 as they are describing and rating what it was like BEFORE renovation work was done!) The transformation was truly amazing where there is a beautiful grassy lawn along 34th Ave., PLENTY of nice clean, new benches to lounge on by yourself or with family and friends, new playground equipment and sprinklers, tennis courts (whereas before was just ugly plain asphalt), and long picnic tables, chess tables, and even an amphitheater space. AND ... *drumroll*.... YES, TWO dog runs (1 for smaller dogs and the other for larger)!!! Other Jackson Heights residents and I really pressed our local government to please provide and they delivered!!! These 2 dog runs are side by side and occupy what used to be 1 of 2 handball courts (1 still remains). These dog runs have a long hose that runs water to clean off these grounds and provide drinking water for dogs who visit. (And of course, it has a large poop bag dispenser right in front in case any owner forgot to bring theirs from home!) And YES, there are events that occur during the warm weather months in this park. All of this due to the eminent domain approach to the removal of dog owners and our pups from the grassy field we've been congregating and socializing at for years. This radical decision left many of us, the non drivers mainly, without a open space to run our dogs, share a laugh, catching up with those whose company we look forward to being among. All to build and preserve a wack tee ball field for little kids that a year and a half later -- the munchkins have yet to materialize. But the slow arm of the parks department finally began construction on a cleverly designed new dog park, albeit too small being thin in width and short in length. The project looks to be about single digit completed after almost two years which burns my butt a bit, as private industry would have wrapped this up in weeks but as with much of my life -- a grin and bare (bear) it, smile and wave approach and reluctantly accepting this tired, old and dirty cities inability to do anything on time and on budget.

No toddler equipment or small slides, no grass or landscaping, and the playground overlooks a really busy intersection. There is a musical chime feature that works better than most.
