This Mosque is extra special to us, that's where my hubby took his shahada! He loves to come here. We had been praying jummah here together & we love it. It's a fairly new mosque & I love how beautiful it is. Very clean & well organized. We look forward to come every week to pray on Friday. When I saw a Facebook event called "Meet the Muslims" inviting the public to come tour the local mosque and learn about the Muslim beliefs, I was thrilled for the opportunity. One of my dearest friends, whom I admire immensely, is Muslim and I wanted to learn more about what makes her a wonderful person. I was enthusiastically greeted and given a name tag. The woman asked my name and wrote it both in English and in Arabic for me. Then I was invited to take a seat with other guests to watch a short video about the building itself. This mosque was built with form and function in mind-and we'd learn about the different rooms and features of the building throughout our tour. I was impressed that it was built with large windows facing Mecca-and even the carpeting in the floor was designed to give direction on where to sit. In the prayer room, we sat on the floor and listened to a couple members talk about their beliefs. It was done in a manner that was incredibly respectful and educational-with explanations about the parallels between the Quran and the Bible. I felt a dignified reverence and mutual respect between the Muslims and visitors-especially during question-and-answer time when we got to ask questions. One of the women gave a beautiful explanation about the hijab, took questions from the group and even helped women try them on, if they wanted to. Of course, I wanted to participate and learned the proper way to fold and wear it. After, there was a call to prayer and guests were invited to observe, if we wanted. I respectfully sat in the back of the room and watched as the devout members went through their rituals of prayer and worship. It was beautiful and I felt a feeling of community and oneness. Even though I did not participate myself, nor share the same beliefs, I felt like I was included in their worship. My biggest takeaway from the event was that the Muslim folks are a peaceful, kind and loving people. Unfortunately, the extremists have set a terrible stereotype out in the world, but they do not represent the Muslim religion as a whole. I encourage you to visit and see for yourself.
