Rude place. Dry faced nappy edges, 6 foot 7ft Amazon mail worker, needing a perm Renee is just a unhappy person. Never again will I come here. Some people don't need to be working with the public. Even if you don't like it, fake it till you make it. She rolls her eyes and was very unprofessional. Her miserable self should not have a job. Got mad when I have her 2.00, asking "you don't have twenty cents", I told her no. Why would you think I'm giving you $2. Make it make sense .. smh she just rolled her eyes like I have her extra work to do. Definitely taking this above property level read more

Very slow. Do not come for anything passport related if you can help it. Zero stars. They said the waiting time would be 5-10 minutes and anyone will wait 30+ minutes for passport help. Only come if one has 1-2 hours to spare and a ton of patience. More staff needs to be hired. Very understaffed which leads to the worst service ever received at a post office. Save time and money and go somewhere else. Driving to the closest cities (Memphis or Nashville) would be more productive. read more

The site of the Battle of Salem Cemetery is located on a quiet road in Madison County, Tennessee…read moreand as I was in Jackson, Tennessee on business, I saw a sign pointing here and decided to take a moment to check it out. I have visited multiple Civil War sites and one thing that never ceases to amaze me is how tranquil these places are, yet on December 19, 1862, that tranquility was shattered when approximately one thousand men engaged in a two hour battle. We need to remember these moments in history, we need to remember the footsteps that led us to today. Again, I am always surprised at the tranquility of these Civil War battle sites. It is almost like the land is saying that it knew violence and now only embraces peace and tranquility. I am better for finding this spot and am grateful that I was able to pay my respects to those who fell on that fateful day back in 1862. If you are in the area, I definitely recommend you come here. Pay your respects and learn of the footsteps that led us to the world we stand in today. I give this a rating of five stars and again, I would definitely recommend a visit here.

The Reed party came to present-day Decatur County and into Henderson County, where they encountered…read morea group of Chickasaw Indians. The story goes that the Reeds formed a close bond with the Indians, participating in hunting and fishing activities and adopting their way of life. Eventually, Joseph Reed left his sons Jack and William during the winter of 1817 to live with the Chickasaw while he returned to Georgia to bring the rest of his family to join them. The boys, aged 11 and 7, were reunited when their father returned in the spring of 1818 with the rest of their family and enslaved individuals. Once settled, they built the homestead on what is now Shady Hill Road. Several remains of the ages-old original structures were built when the Reeds first arrived. Also, there are more additions to the property as the Reed family's descendants remained there for almost 190 years until the final person died in the early 2000s. Since then, the property has remained vacant, from what I was told. On the property, the is the Reed cemetery, structures from the original property, and upkeep of the lands. There are no plaques or signs to talk about the historical site. It just remains as is. I also could not tell you who keeps up the property now or who owns it. I might be a descendant, but I only learned of my lineage to the Reeds a few years ago. I am gathering more information on Reed Place to tell its story from all sides accurately. I think it is easy to talk about the side I descend from, but what about the other inhabitants who also occupied this space? Once I have that information, I look forward to sharing more about my learning. If you enjoy history and are in the area, this would be worth stopping by to see. I love genealogy and ancestral taphophilia, so it only made sense that I ventured here.

Parking is a bit tricky on a busy day, but they have a lot on both sides of the building to help customers with overflow. The bathrooms are always clean, and the staff who work here are always nice. I think my only complaint is that the research area for genealogy is often not put in order due to patrons not being courteous and replacing the research books or documents back in alphabetized order. That can be a little annoying. Otherwise, no complaints are to be had.

Passing through Jackson on surface streets and I spotted this marker. It was very easy to pull over…read moreto read it and you should too! The marker has the same text on both sides. It reads, "Mabel Louise "Big Maybelle" Smith. Born circa 1924 in Jackson, Tennessee, "Big Maybelle" became a powerful Rhythm & Blues Singer. With her emotive delivery, and as one of the premier R&B chanteuses of the 1950s, she served as an essential link between raucous 1950s R&B and the soul sounds that emerged in the next decade. Her recordings include Candy, which received the Grammy Hall of Fame Award in 1999, and the original version of Whole Lot of Shakin Going On. Her career led her to sing at the famous Apollo Theatre in New York City. She died January 23, 1972 in Cleveland, Ohio, and later buried there in Evergreen Cemetery. In 2011 Smith was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame." Big Maybelle was a commanding rhythm and blues singer whose voice carried both grit and tenderness. She rose to fame in the 1950s with hits like Gabbin' Blues and her original recording of Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On, produced by Quincy Jones. She bridged the raw energy of R&B with the emerging soul sound. Though her life was cut short in 1972, her posthumous induction into the Blues Hall of Fame in 2011 affirmed her enduring influence on American music.
