Red Oak is another small roadside unincorporated community, in rural VA, in Charlotte County on Rt. 15. It looks like this post office used to be a garage or some sort of warehouse. One site said it used to be a home to a bottling company. Pretty interesting spot for a post office though. Research indicated a post office was opened here in 1839, but I'm not sure if this is the same one. The population is about 1,000. The inside has a vintage feel with wooden walls, wrought iron, brass mail slots and brass post offices boxes. The post master was welcoming and accommodating. Plenty of parking and a handicap ramp. The inside was tidy with a desk displayed with community newspapers, bulletins, and posters. It was well stocked and had tons of stamps to choose from, pretty good for a itty bitty post office in a community of 130+ people! There wasn't much else around, except an abandoned building and a neglected Little Free Library. But the character of this building with mailboxes next to it, one green and one blue, warranted the 4 stars. I've been to this post office a couple of times and always get a kick out of it! They want to pull all the way into our yard up to the front door, even though we have a driveway and a walk way. They want to leave packages in the middle of the yard or driveway, even though we have an easily accessible covered front porch. They claim they can't access our driveway and then don't deliver packages or leave a slip to pick it up at the office. One time, they didn't want to put the package on our porch, so they tried to balance it on the top of our mailbox using the flag to steady it. It's easy for someone to say that I'm making this stuff up, but we have every instance on camera. Needless to say, I have contacted the post master regarding this and the issues still persist. I'm not sure where to go from here. I'm not paying for a mailbox at the post office, but I also don't feel like I have to put up with this.

I highly recommend checking out this place. The admission is very affordable and the experience is worth the cost. I really enjoyed learning about the property from Patrick Henry's descendant. He was very kind and well-informed about the life of Patrick Henry. The first part of the experience includes a short film about Patrick Henry's life and family. Patrick Henry's descendant explained everything about Patrick Henry and was passionate about history. My family and I were very fortunate to have the whole property to ourselves. The property has breathtaking views and is very peaceful. I enjoyed walking the grounds and seeing the different historical buildings. The whole experience was truly memorable and enjoyable. I will definitely visit again when I travel to Virginia from Florida. I went to purchase a book in the gift shop about Patrick Henry and his descendant gave me a free copy. I really appreciated that and enjoy learning more about the founding fathers.

The marker reads, "One mile east stands Belle Grove, the home of Whitmell Pugh Tunstall (1810-1854). Educated at Danville Academy and the University of North Carolina, Tunstall was admitted to the bar in 1832. He served in the House of Delegates (1836-1841; 1845-1848) and the Senate of Virginia (1841-1842). As a delegate representing Pittsylvania County, he fought for a decade to charter the Richmond and Danville Railroad (part of the present-day Norfolk Southern Railway). He served as the company's first president from 1847 until his death. Tunstall is buried at Belle Grove." Online, there is more information. "Whitmell Pugh Tunstall was born in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. He was educated at Danville Academy and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. A railroad was a revolutionary idea in the 1830s, which had the confidence of very few people at the time. However, the greatest opposition in the southern portion of Virginia came from those along the Roanoke River who ran the Roanoke Navigation Company and its system of canals. They feared a rival in the transportation business. It was not until 1845 that petitions were again introduced. Finally, after a struggle of nine years, the charter was granted on March 9, 1847. The marker reads, "Rawley White Martin Residence. Here stands Morea, the home of Lt. Col. Rawley W. Martin (1835-1912), a physician who served with Pittsylvania County soldiers during the Civil War in the 53d Virginia Infantry Regiment of Brig. Gen. Lewis A. Armistead's brigade. At Gettysburg, Pa., on 3 July 1863, Martin led the regiment in the Confederate attack known as Pickett's Charge, and was wounded and captured. After the war, Martin resumed his practice here and, in 1873, bought this ca. 1840 house. He later served on the University of Virginia Board of Visitors, and as president of the state Board of Health, the Board of Medical Examiners, and the Medical Society of Virginia."
