I highly recommend checking out this place. The admission is very affordable and the experience is worth the cost. I really enjoyed learning about the property from Patrick Henry's descendant. He was very kind and well-informed about the life of Patrick Henry. The first part of the experience includes a short film about Patrick Henry's life and family. Patrick Henry's descendant explained everything about Patrick Henry and was passionate about history. My family and I were very fortunate to have the whole property to ourselves. The property has breathtaking views and is very peaceful. I enjoyed walking the grounds and seeing the different historical buildings. The whole experience was truly memorable and enjoyable. I will definitely visit again when I travel to Virginia from Florida. I went to purchase a book in the gift shop about Patrick Henry and his descendant gave me a free copy. I really appreciated that and enjoy learning more about the founding fathers.

At Gettysburg, Pa., on 3 July 1863, Martin led the regiment in the Confederate attack known as Pickett's Charge, and was wounded and captured. After the war, Martin resumed his practice here and, in 1873, bought this ca. 1840 house. He later served on the University of Virginia Board of Visitors, and as president of the state Board of Health, the Board of Medical Examiners, and the Medical Society of Virginia." "Whitmell Pugh Tunstall was born in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. He was educated at Danville Academy and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. A railroad was a revolutionary idea in the 1830s, which had the confidence of very few people at the time. However, the greatest opposition in the southern portion of Virginia came from those along the Roanoke River who ran the Roanoke Navigation Company and its system of canals. They feared a rival in the transportation business. It was not until 1845 that petitions were again introduced. Finally, after a struggle of nine years, the charter was granted on March 9, 1847. Whitmell Pugh Tunstall died on February 19, 1854 of typhoid fever, 2 years before the railroad he had long sought was completed." [Review 15064 overall, 566 of 2021, number 1283 in Virginia.]

The inside was tidy with a desk displayed with community newspapers, bulletins, and posters. It was well stocked and had tons of stamps to choose from, pretty good for a itty bitty post office in a community of 130+ people! There wasn't much else around, except an abandoned building and a neglected Little Free Library. But the character of this building with mailboxes next to it, one green and one blue, warranted the 4 stars. I've been to this post office a couple of times and always get a kick out of it! Inside you'll find a lot of wood paneling, vintage brass mail boxes, and many interesting details, like the iron panels at the top near the ceiling. Another cool feature is the old book of post offices with its yellowed pages that begged to be studied! What I wouldn't give to look up all the small town post offices in VA! Despite its size, this post office offers the basic services, no passport service and processes mail and packages for its approximate 500 residents. This post office has hosted "customer appreciation day" where it opened its doors to the community and served refreshments; how cool is that? Due to flooding, in 2018, this branch temporarily closed, but it's now in full swing! Nearby, keep your eyes peeled for the historical marker which gives a brief history of the significance of the area, and the bright blue water tower reaching toward the sky! The post office is a plain brick building and it's pretty big for a small town like this. I'm sure there was another old post office around here somewhere! And yes, we found it! We went into a restaurant in a really old building, and the owner told us that this building used to be a drug store, with the post office in the middle, and a country store at the end. Eureka!
