Presumably built in the 1950s, it remains virtually untouched by modernization (aside from the computer terminals, which are free to use for all visitors). Old wooden bookcases house a vast collection of adult and children's books. Old-school tables and chairs still adorn the (large) children's section. Even the heavy gold curtains hanging in the windows reflects the ambiance of yesteryear. And the librarians? Well, just as warm and inviting as the library itself. If you ever visited libraries as a child, you'll have a sense of revisiting your childhood when you visit the South Boston Library.

I signed in and he gave me a sheet of paper with credentials and explained how to sign-in on the computers. I picked a computer, logged in and was able to print off my label without any trouble. They have a great area for kids with several types of toys and a smaller table for them. We've never taken advantage of the service but they also have iPad's available for kids with educational programs! Lastly, the librarians are so helpful and kind!!! I never feel stupid when asking questions! Lately, I stopped in because our printer wasn't working and they helped explain how to print photos from the PC's they have available. I did that for a nominal fee and was VERY impressed by the quality! I just cannot say enough good things about this little library! Adults can get their taxes done (for free) with AARPs volunteer program. The library has toys for kids and wheelchairs for adults. The web site has useful information on events and books. The employees are so nice. There is a private study room where you can have a low key celebration or eat. You just need to reserve the room if you want to guarantee the space and you need to clean up your mess. The soft chairs are comfy. If I had kids, I would bring an adult to supervise and check out books while another adult went grocery shopping. This place is awesome.

What a pleasure to move to Lynchburg from the country and have access to this vast (in comparison)…read morelibrary. The resources are extensive and well arranged but the staff leaves much to be desired. Some of the staff seemed to act as if I were disturbing their relaxation by asking to check out a book. Approaching the desk they give you this fisheye "What are you up to?" look. Maybe they could work on that in the staff meeting. The kids section is very large.

I was told by the older man when I was signing up there were no late fees , bring my books back a…read morebit late and was charged and told until I pay my fee I cannot check out anything but I had just returned my books so it's not like they are missing or anything, the library has their possessions back. I also tried to explain to the lady working that the man there had told me recently they did not have a late fee, she would not work with me and proceeded to tell me to leave.

You can find a good selection of local history and genealogy here as well as a good selection of civil War books. Overall though the non-fiction collection is not all that broad and although you can order books from other branches, you can't expect to find just what you want if you just drop in.. There is a vast array of fiction though, with all the latest authors. There are a number of programs to attend and a table with books for sale to benefit the library. The library used to have a policy of not charging fines to senior citizens but since they associated with the Bedford Library that policy is no more, so you my fellow geezers better remember those "due dates". .
