If you don't have a laptop or other device, you can sit at one of the library computers. There are used book/movie sales, activities and classes (photography, computers, internet safety, etc). When it isn't crowded (which is frequently) you can stay longer at a computer. There are lots of activities (and toys) for kids. When the weather is warmer, it is fun to go across the street and grab ice cream or pizza.

You can find a good selection of local history and genealogy here as well as a good selection of civil War books. Overall though the non-fiction collection is not all that broad and although you can order books from other branches, you can't expect to find just what you want if you just drop in.. There is a vast array of fiction though, with all the latest authors. There are a number of programs to attend and a table with books for sale to benefit the library. The library used to have a policy of not charging fines to senior citizens but since they associated with the Bedford Library that policy is no more, so you my fellow geezers better remember those "due dates". .

The resources are extensive and well arranged but the staff leaves much to be desired. Some of the staff seemed to act as if I were disturbing their relaxation by asking to check out a book. Now that I've returned, I see that I really missed out on exploring the city. There's so much more! The marker on Court Street is located near Monument Terrace and the Lynchburg Museum. It has text on both sides that points out the history of the city. On the front, "In 1757 John Lynch opened a ferry here; in 1765 a church was built. In 1786 Lynchburg was established by act of assembly; in 1791 the first tobacco warehouse was built. Lynchburg was incorporated as a town in 1805. In 1840 the James River and Kanawha Canal, from Richmond to Lynchburg, was opened; the section to Buchanan, in 1851. Lynchburg became a city in 1852." And on the rear, "Trains began running on the first railroad, the Virginia and Tennessee, in 1852. Lynchburg was a main military supply center, 1862-65. Here the Confederates under General Early defeated the Union General Hunter, June 18, 1864. In 1893 Randolph-Macon Woman's College opened; in 1903, Lynchburg College. In 1920 the council manager form of government was adopted." And now you know why it's LYNCHBURG. [Review 15088 overall, 590 of 2021, number 1304 in Virginia.]
