One amazing thing I saw today when I was walking through Downtown Rapid City, it's a new campaign that the city has started to end panhandling and encourage people to donate to Real Causes. So besides some signs, I also saw a Donations or Giving Meter on some corners of the Downtown!! The Donations made in the Meter will go to Local Charities!! I find that to be a genius idea!! It couldn't be more straight forward, and it's a way to keep crime down!! GO MR SALAMUN!! I can already tell that you are in office!!! :)

OMG   O M G ! ! !…read more I'm impressed!!! And I'm not easily the impressed type!!! We live on one of the hills here in town. Last week I was watching the city and the surroundings from one of my windows. It was already dark, probably around nine o'clock give or take not later than ten o'clock. Then I heard a crazy amount of sirens, I could tell, because of the sounds, that it it was the FD. Few minutes later I turned and looked towards the other hill on the opposite side from where I was at, and I saw a huge flame with the shape like the emojis in the middle of the dark, and I was OMG, because I have never seen fire like that before!!! Almost immediately I saw the lights from afar of the FD arriving at the scene, and OMG those guys ROCK!!! It was like they just turned off a switch, because as soon as they got there the flames instantly disappeared!! THANK YOU GUYS for all you do!!! I have heard and watched through the communication systems all you do, but this, I have never seen before in my life!!! I am sooo grateful to know that we count on one of the Best Fire Departments in Rapid City, SD!!! You guys ROCK!!!! Thank you Thank you soooo very much!!!

There is a mall, hospital, university & all of the usual chain stores & restaurants. There are a few Starbucks, Target, Bass Pro Shop, Culver's, Spencer's, Panera, ... Many ethnic restaurants are here now Indian, Italian, Mexican, Thai, Chinese ... The major hotel chains, car dealerships, gas stations, fast food restaurants....The city is very excited as they are getting their first Barnes & Noble's, although I find the independent book store is much more interesting.

This cave is…read moreprivately owned, and not going to be the same as wind cave or jewel cave, and that's where I think people review this place wrong. This is a way smaller cave compared to caves in the area, the tour was about 45 minutes to an hour. It was a LOT of fun to though. The history was cool and just learning about some of the geological factors of the cave was really neat. A pro to the cave as well is that this place doesn't do reservations like wind cave or jewel cave where dates are book out pretty far. Wonderland cave does tours by the hour, so just show up before the hour and you can get in! We came in with a group of 20, and they got us all in there and were super accommodating. This place is really fun, don't let the negative reviews push you away!

Hours seem silly, it's a town! Not really our cup of tea as we don't gamble or drink and have…read moremobility issues. No parking on the streets and, being as most of the buildings are historical there is not parking at them and entry ways are difficult at best. Most all food is overpriced. We were there because it was a good affordable location as a base for what we wanted to do in the northern half of the Black Hills. We stayed in a very nice Comfort Inn at the southern tip of the town, a couple miles only from the next town. It is surprising how many people live in the Black Hills.

If memory from my history classes serves me correct, Deadwood was known for its lawlessness. Wild Bill Hickock was shot here. If you find yourself in South Dakota, then take the time to stop by Deadwood. It is not too far away from Mount Rushmore. You can also play the slots while you're here. Like a little touch of Vegas. We walked in the footsteps of legends that made history here since 1876. In 1876, miners moved into the northern Black Hills, they found gold & Deadwood was born. Overnight, the tiny gold camp boomed & attracted outlaws, gamblers and gunslingers & gold seekers. Wild Bill Hickok was one of those men who came looking for fortune. But just a few short weeks after arriving, he was gunned down while holding a poker hand of aces and eights - forever after known as the Dead Man's Hand. Calamity Jane also made a name for herself in these parts and is buried next to Hickok in Mount Moriah Cemetery. Other legends, like Potato Creek Johnny, Seth Bullock and Al Swearengen, created their legends and legacies in this tiny Black Hills town. Deadwood Alive is a theater troupe that reenacts the major historic events such as the Trial of Jack McCall and Wild Bill's assassination that inspired legends. Deadwood was recently voted as the "Cutest City" in all of South Dakota and I will say after…read moretraveling at all, I believe this is true. It is very much what you think, old western storefronts. The entire vibe is pretty much old west, complete with a cowboy shootout in the streets. In the square outside the Franklin Hotel, they often have music, which was a welcome addition on a cool night. Also in the Franklin Hotel is an AMAZING steakhouse called Legends Steakhouse. Get a reservation because you'll need one, and treat yourself to a fantastic steak. I was in deadwood for two days and found that to be just about the right amount of time to experience this historic, interesting, welcoming South Dakota city.
