    Old Western Jail

Deadwood is a magical place full of adventure and wonderment! No matter where you go in this beautiful town you will be sure to have a good time, I know I did. I loved the local bars and gift shops, as well as the eateries and casinos. There is a lot of history from the Gold Rush Era here. This is an old western town that still sticks to its guns, you can find the streets lined with motorcycles from traveling bikers and campers. America is really a beautiful place! It was such a sentimental experience being able to stay here, I discovered the many hiking trails and camping destinations that are available. This is a great destination for fishing as well. There are beginner trails and advanced trails too for hiking, biking, and in the winter snow shoeing!

Cute little historical town with main focus on Bill Hickok, Jack McCall and casinos. Be sure to check out the visitor center to get the map. Casino lots are free if you're a guest but public parking structure charges $10 for 24/hours. All you need is your license plate and it's the honor system because no one is employed to check and the gate doesn't work. There are live reenactment performances on the street every hour. Check the website for up to date times. We came during day and night. Pretty cool to see the difference in crowd and the lighting.

Enjoyed the "old town," even if geared toward tourists, gambling, and eating, of course. Fun architecture. Cobble stones. Lots of t-shirts! Worth spending an hour or so exploring.

Vegas but without the strippers. Nashville but with gambling. Branson, but without shopping or entertainment. Deadwood is a very small town where every hotel has a casino and some casinos also have a hotel. I didn't spent nearly as much time in Deadwood as I could have because I was only passing through here from one big National Park to another National Park. I see that Deadwood by itself is a destination, aside from its easy proximity to Devils Tower and Mount Rushmore. Lots of hotel choices. Make sure that you're picking one closer to Main Street, which was my mistake. Parking isn't free or cheap in "downtown."

Night scene, looks like saloon girls are there..

Deadwood is a birthplace of the real Wild West and everything good and bad that came with it. Established in 1876 as Black Hills mining town, Deadwood was flooded with saloons, gambling parlors, saloon girls and people like Wild Bill, Calamity Jane and Poker Alice..just to mention few. While we were visiting, there was construction going on at the town entrance. There are plenty of souvenir shops all over town, so if you need Wild West souvenir like hat, belt or boots, you can definitely find them here.

This is the second time I went to South Dakota on business and even though the company office is in Rapid City.... I just had to stay in Deadwood. This place is amazing...I mean it's still looks like an town from the Old West. Growing up I remember reading stories about cowboys and playing/acting as one... to have been given the chance to stay at such a historic place is just cool. This place has a lot of good bars and plenty of gambling establishments. Pretty good place to have a great time if you are in the area. There is also an acting troupe that performs reenactments of the trial of Bill McCall who murdered Wild Bill Hickok. I will post a video of that same troupe giving a teaser reenactment of a Wild West Shootout. Again awesome place.

Great town if you like to gamble. History takes a back seat here. The cemetery was fine and the #10 saloon. The re-enactment was fun to watch. Very commercialised though...

And there's a good story on the marker: "'Deadwood's Sky Pilot,' Henry Weston Smith, was born in Ellington, Connecticut, January 10, 1828. At 23 he became a Methodist exhorter. This led to ordination in the Methodist Episcopal church and he served various communities in New England. In 1862 he enlisted in the Union Army. Caring for the wounded may have turned his mind to healing, for he studied the practice of medicine and was licensed in 1867. In 1876 he joined the great rush to these Black Hills - - not to mine gold but to claim lives for God. Reading and writing poetry eased his loneliness. During the week he performed manual labor to send savings to his family in Kentucky and to sustain himself as he preached on Deadwood's main street. On Sunday, August 20, 1876, after service in Deadwood, he tacked a note on his cabin door saying he had gone to Crook City to preach. On the way he was shot. In his pocket were the notes, now blood-stained, for the undelivered sermon. His Bible lay unopened. The Society of Black Hills Pioneers erected this monument in 1914 where he was killed.

Actually has remnants of the original boardwalk and almost 40 feet of original storefront. The real Flavor of this place though is the tour itself! I had an idea it was going to be CHEESY when the guy running the place would NOT even look me in the face when I asked about tour times and prices! It was only $5 a head(plus tax, kids free) but after going on the self-guided, tape recorded, way hokey tour that wound you around the basement of the saloon above, I could understand why the guy looked guilty about taking my money! If you really want to see the things advertised in the pamphlet you will, but be prepared for a good laugh otherwise. Go with your sense of humor! OH, I forgot! you get to pick a free rock in the middle of the tour!

It is embarrassing to the Chinese culture that this place exists as a legit stop that is marketed in Deadwood. If the founders of this establishment genuinely cared about the history of Chinese workers in Deadwood, they would have spent much more time and resources putting together a display and piece of history worth visiting. I love Deadwood, but left embarrassed to have visited this SCAM.

A Hidden Gem in the Heart of Deadwood…read more My wife and I stumbled upon this incredibly unique and peaceful wine house just steps away from the hustle and bustle of downtown Deadwood--and what a discovery it was. In a city known for its casinos and saloons, this beautifully restored home offers an entirely different kind of experience: one centered around relaxation, quality, and taste. Housed in a gorgeously maintained historic property, this spot features multiple cozy rooms filled with elegant furnishings and stained glass windows, along with spacious porches both upstairs and downstairs where you can unwind with a glass or bottle of wine. The ambiance alone makes it worth a visit. The wine selection is top-tier and surprisingly affordable, especially for South Dakota. They offer a solid list of wines by the glass or bottle, but also have a curated room filled with exceptional bottles from around the world--at prices that beat anything else we saw in the area, whether in Custer or Deadwood. You can enjoy your wine there (with a small corkage fee) or take it home. To complement the wine, they serve thoughtfully arranged charcuterie boards featuring a variety of cheeses, fruits, and other healthy bites. You can also add sliced salami to customize your board further to enhance the experience. This isn't your typical restaurant or wine bar--it's more like being invited into someone's beautifully curated home for a relaxing afternoon or evening. It's a peaceful, upscale oasis in a town that can sometimes feel a little wild. Highly recommended if you're looking for something refined, memorable, and just a short stroll from the main strip.
