The downtown Palmer post office is, on the surface, a friendlier and less hectic alternative to Anchorage. Staff are generally polite, and the pace is more manageable. However, there are some serious and ongoing issues that shouldn't be overlooked. First, they do not answer the phone--period. It doesn't matter how many times you call, how long you wait, or how often the call drops. For a public service handling time-sensitive and often important mail, that is simply unacceptable. Second, and more concerning, is the lack of basic attention to detail. I recently received a certified notice with the sender information left completely blank. That one missing line caused 48 hours of unnecessary stress, trying to determine what could have triggered it. When I brought this to the counter clerk's attention, there was no attempt to document the issue or follow up--just a casual acknowledgment that "it happens." If I'm not mistaken, this is the U.S. Post Office. We pay for this service through our taxes, and completing required forms correctly is not optional--it's the job. If a notice has a line for sender information, it should be filled out. Leaving it blank is not a small oversight; it has real consequences for the people receiving those notices. To make matters worse, no one could tell me who was responsible--whether it was the carrier or someone in the senders office--so there's no accountability. Add in long Saturday lines (often out the door) and an auxiliary station that isn't full-service, and it becomes clear that while this location may be more pleasant than Anchorage, it still falls short where it counts. Missing package, won't answer their phone. They make you physically go into the Post Office to have them look for your package. More than once they have put my mail into others boxes. One time it was a phone, the person that received my phone kept it. I filed a police report on it, was able to turn the phone off and report it as stolen but never received my phone. I'm very frustrated with the fact that I can't make missing package reports over the phone or online. They charge over 300 a year for a small box yet they can't seem to sort the mail properly read more

I am temporarily disabled and I have had this issue more than 5 times, i have made it obvious were I am multiple times and they still try to fit my oversized box into my tiny mailbox instead of walking the minute to my door which is your job. This happens everytime, I get food sent from my parents and have had stuff go bad because they can't do their jobs. I have had signs on my door, they write back door on the package and I have called and explained exactly where. Honestly it's not that hard. read more

Well today I arrived at the Palmer post office a bit upset for a few reasons. Asked to talk to a supervisor, the nice woman at the counter went back and after a long period of time she came and said they were both at lunch. First, I don't believe her as it wouldn't have taken her that long to see of they were there. Second, there should never be a time a supervisor isn't there - that is poor leadership. Third, she called me back and shared what they told her. Their lack of leadership put this employee in a bad spot - that is what a supervisor is paid to do. Stand up, work on running a quality post office- we don't have options and leadership sits in the back and puts lower paid employees in the line of fire from upset customers. Shame on you! read more

I tried intercepting a package 3 times, filled out a bunch of paperwork, wrote down my info 3 times, told by two different supervisors that they would get my package bc the contracted carrier had it yet it needed to go to a P.O. Box, (meaning supervisor didn't do their job to indicate it was supposed to be intercepted), also they mentioned it was a guess the carrier had it because no one could find it yet on the tracking it said it was at usps. come to find the next day it's back in anchor being shipped back to the original location. it's so frustrating. read more

This is the worst run Post Office in the United States of America. There are long lines everyday because their delivery service is practically non existent and their contract deliverymen are unreliable. Contract deliverymen refuse to deliver boxes and parcels to private residences. Collectives of mailboxes are often targeted by thieves. Also, many boxes are scanned as delivered only to have the deliverymen drive off with the box. If you have your parcels or boxes held at the post office then you must stand in line for two hours or more to obtain your packages or boxes. If you have an option, use a different post office. read more

Palmer AK Post Office: I have never been to a US Post Office where the service is this bad in my entire life. That includes Hawaii, Alaska, Oregon, Washington, California, Arizona, Pennsylvania, and Iowa. First off, there are 6 service windows but NEVER more than 3 staffed at a time. When they are staffed, it is by the slowest, most unmotivated, underachieving, disingenuous clock punchers I've ever seen. There is zero sense of urgency, zero concept of time, and zero evident desire to do anything but stand around. These people act like they are all on tranquilizers. In Wasilla AK, where there is much higher traffic volume, the clerks are courteous, fast, and awake. The same goes for Eagle River, Anchorage Intl Airport location, and the other Alaska post offices I have visited. Palmer stands out among its peers as an example of what everybody is talking about when they make post office jokes. I was last in on July 1 to renew my po box. There were 5 people in front of me and two clerks at the counter. It took almost an hour to get to a clerk. By the time I made it, there were 20+ people behind me engaged in various stages of dissatisfaction, ranging from sighing, to rolling their eyes, to cussing and stomping out. No acknowledgement from the staff, who continued to plod along at a snail's pace. When you consider that these people are quasi-federal employees who are paid better, and have better benefits, than most people of comparable employment everywhere else, it is a travesty that they are not held to some kind of standards that actually see the light of day. If this is typical of the USPS nationally, I can see why they lose $1 billion a year. If it is an isolated problem then these people need to be sacked and replaced with competent personnel. The Employees at the Post Office in Palmer, AK are the best. In the 11 years I have lived in Palmer, Service and Interaction with the Public has only gone from good to better to best. Typically one person is working the counter for outgoing mail so a typical wait time to send a package is about 10-15 minutes (unless it's Christmas time - in which case it'd probably be faster for you to hop on your bicycle and hand deliver your package rather than wait in line to send it). And for the love of all things good in this world - do NOT make a suggestion on how they could be more efficient - their already slow pace will slow down to the point where you'll think you're in a Zac Snyder film. Well, i have lived in palmer all my life. Hell, i was born in palmer! Ever since, I have been a child. The local post office has been hell!!! They don't have good customer service and package delivery is a nightmare. They also refuse to answer their phone. I called like 10 times nothing. Just got this annoying buzzing sound after about a minute of it ring. If you can, i would recommend getting a post office box with ups no usps. I've been going to the Palmer post office most of my life. They used to have adequate staffing and even *gasp!* dare I say friendly staff. This is no longer the case. In the last several years they've had many long time employees retire, and have not replaced them. Staffing is at a bare minimum, and the staff that are there are a surly bunch - I'm sure they think they're over worked and under paid, and maybe they are. You'd think being a small town post office they would be friendly and helpful. Nope. They have an attitude, and express it frequently. Lines out the door waiting for "customer service" is a daily occurrence. Avoid the counter at all costs. Seriously - take a short drive up the PW (traffic & taking your life in your hands is another story...), and visit a friendly post office like the one at Brentwood. If you're mailing out packages, do yourself a favor and opt for the priority mail flat rate boxes, print the postage & label at home, and just drop it off on the counter - no waiting in line. Or go ahead and request the carrier pickup. This is a great service. On the up side - If you've been around Palmer a long time you'll likely run into several people you know while checking the mail. It's nice to catch up and Palmer residents are a friendly bunch. If you need something from the counter do some meditation and calming breaths while you wait in line. There will definitely be enough time for that. read more

Over the years I've had packages arrive without any notice being sent, then returned, only to be notified the day after they were returned, as has happened today with two packages. At other times I've had live fruit trees mailed here, and the PO never could find them anywhere back in their office. In 2019 I had a package that was delivered to these guys on 29 April. Despite personally going back there multiple times, they said the package never arrived. Then on 3 July, after more than 2 months sitting in their office, they sent a notice to me to pick it up. I went in, and picked up some dead plants. These guys are beyond pathetic. I don't know if it's management, or their system, or the workers. It is the absolute worst I've seen after having lived in Georgia, Florida, Virginia, Arizona, Wyoming, Colorado, Hawaii, other parts of Alaska, and various DOD installations in Japan and Korea. They are seriously in need of a thorough surprise inspection/investigation into what's going on in there. I've also had packages that they said were delivered though a notice of parcel to pick-up was never sent to me. Those packages were never seen from. Plus there's the issue of theft occurring at the mailboxes in our area that the USPS has never adequately investigated. This post office should be closed down, the manager fired, and all mail routed through Wasilla. read more

I have to admit, I love visiting post offices in different towns when I'm traveling. It's a great way to get a feel for the locals and kind of chat with them while in line. I guess I'm weird like that. I thought the counter help was fine, not the friendliest but they were knowledgeable and didn't get irritated when I asked if they had any cute stamps. I would rather be shot in the face with a crossbow than have to visit the local Palmer post office. I dread receiving package notifications because it means finding 30 to 45 minutes of my busy life to stand in line simply to pick up a package. And that is not an exaggerating. At least 30 minutes standing in line, just so someone can hand you a package. I commute to Anchorage for work during the day. So that means you have two Saturdays to schedule your afternoon around picking a package up at the post office, or they send it back. The counter help just does not care. They are slow, rude, impersonal, and mismanaged. The line stretches out the door and down the hall regardless of when you arrive. The length of the line is simply always the maximum someone is willing to commit to. You can stand in line and watch as people drop out of line and leave in frustration faster than the people working the counter can help people. It is embarrassing. Not to mention that we regularly receive mail delivered to our home that belongs to our neighbors and vice versa, as the delivery staff is as mismanaged and incompetent as their counter employees. Sometimes the deliveries are obviously pieces of extremely sensitive mail. Government issued ID cards, IRS correspondence, Investment statements, these are among the things that have been delivered arbitrarily to the wrong address in our neighborhood. We just have a regular routine of picking up our mail and then redelivering the pieces that were placed in the wrong box. It seems rather criminal, frankly. I have had numerous mail box sized packages that have claimed to have been delivered, but I never received. I lived in eastern Europe. I have experienced the inefficient, impersonal and often corrupt workings of old soviet post offices. If I could have my mail sent there instead of to the Palmer Post Office I would do it in an instant. read more

Worst Post Office ever! Seriously, I've seen molasses flow faster in the cold than these folks move. I've been to large cities with just as many staff and customers that did not have the wait this place does. They give new meaning to "Snail Mail". It's always a line out the door of this place. Expect to waste 20-30 minutes of your time while the only person, maybe two people if your lucky, provide what they call "customer service". Most of the staff is pretty unhappy working here from their demeanor and obviously need to retire to get some young people who move faster while appreciating the fact that they have a cushy job. Literally, these guys suck in service. I was in line recently that went half way down the building. Think they brought out another person to help? Nope, one of the staff closed their register, and left for a break. Hope they enjoyed their lunch break cause I wasted mine waiting it in line at the Palmer Post Office! Without a doubt the WORST PO in the nation. The lines are always long, and the personnel are clearly suffering from major depression. What's even worse, is that this malfeasance extends to those that deliver the mail. Our postal person decides when to deliver the mail on her time. We have gone up to 2 weeks with no mail delivery. The only note we have ever received from her is a request for a xmas gift because of her hard work!!!! By the way, never, ever call the post office because they do not answer, and you cannot leave a message. Horrible. I've lived here 6 years and have filed so many complaints all the way up to DC. Everything from EXTREMELY long lines, grumpy workers and many MANY delivery problems to count. For a while, my neighbors and i had to travel around to find each other to exchange our mail. Never did get a clear answer on that. Unfortunately, if you live here, you don't have a choice. I personally will drive to the Chugiak office for mailing packages or even letters. Watch out for the car-eating pothole exiting, it will destroy your car. Also, who's bright Idea was it to put a passport application site at the busiest post office in the Mat-Su valley?! You're better off driving out of town to do your postal business, the unfortunate part is when you HAVE to pick a package up from there. I limit my packages I order online to items that will fit in my cluster-box parcel bins. I avoid this place at all costs. EXTREMELY understaffed. They're all exhausted looking and not very nice...but understandably so. Also, the outside drive through postal box has been set fire to and vandalized on multiple occasions. If mailing something from this post office, bring it inside and drop it in the slot. It's worth the time and peace of mind. read more

I have been here for almost 40 years and this Post Office is one of the worst. There is 5 spots for employees and is only 1 or 2 helping people. No one to just get packages and the post master is sitting in his office watching all of this ( you can see him). I just recently sent a package to Tenn. with our new Alaska Crystal Glacier Water, wrapped in clear, wrap inside a bottle sock, wrapped in bubble wrap, newspapers, popcorn, in a Styrofoam box inside a cardboard box, nothing moved. On the outside I wrote fragile, bottle water, handle with care and DO NOT FREEZE. Well when it got to Tenn. the bottle was still in the wrap but because it froze no water. Why can't they read the box??? I don't think the Palmer Post office is doing what we are paying for to mail things, so I think some one should see if everyone is really doing there job they are getting paid for and not just sitting in the back drinking coffee.
