And yes, I'm aware the Snowshoe Thompson had deep roots in Alpine County. Looking at the pictures, the Markleeville post office is small and efficient. I say that by all the old private boxes inside, newer and larger ones of packages, and a service desk open within posted hours. There's also the expected community bulletin board and a sign indicating that there's no "recycle" can for junk mail. The one sign that surprised me was that post office employees would not hand mail over the counter, but would help someone figure out how to work the box combination. I guess I'd have to learn the combination if I wanted to pick up a handicapped relative's mail?

I just had a card sent, it was opened, the items taken, then taped back up. They weren't even smart crooks, I would have disposed of the mail all together then send something empty. In my opinion, the folks working there deserve alot more than 7 reviews! So here's mine. I've lived in Arnold almost 4 years now with my son. I'm female, 73, disabled and am a short Hispanic (can I add pretty, widowed, soon not to be disabled) woman. I just wanted y'all to know that from the beginning- the employees of the post office were friendly towards an outsider. Additionally, they are always very helpful, efficient, thorough and a total asset to the community. At times I felt embarrassed when I had to speak up and ask them a question... but they always put me at ease and never made me feel unequal. They frequently asked if I needed help with carrying out packages. So, yeah... how about some more reviews for these folks that work hard for us everyday!

They don't answer their phones during business hours, they don't have a way to leave voice mail, and they like to return your packages without notice and with a useless error code ("wrong address"). Horrible, bad, awful, terrible, useless. I'm so furious right now I'd vote for whichever candidate offers to defund USPS. --- BUT, after going inside I met Terry (90% sure that was his name). And Terry gets 5 stars all to himself. USPS was returning my packages left and right and every person at USPS - this store and the main office - told me 500 different reasons for why it was happening, but no one had a clue how to fix it and most said it couldn't be done and I was just screwed. Terry the savior gave me a form the size of half-sheet of paper, told me to write down 3 things (name, address, and signature) and he'd fix it all. AND HE CAME THROUGH. Packages arrive, mail arrives, all is well. Terry gets 5 stars, the phone services and rest of the office gets -1, so it averages out to 2 stars. They should give Terry control of the office and fire anyone who answers the phone. Or maybe I'll hire him.

Most of the employees are friendly and polite, providing quality service, if you can get them in the 6-hours that they are available per weekday. I understand very well that the USPS budget has been slashed recently, so it's not their fault (personally). It's just very inconvenient and frustrating.
