I was a client of Jeff's for 7 years, in Chicago. I was originally hooked by his haircuts - his attention to detail and ability to give me a great cut that I could easily manage on my own were unparalleled. However, he is also an amazing colorist. One year, I asked Jeff to change my color (I've been a blond with highlights my entire life). He recommended red, which seemed crazy. I LOVED IT! I had never received so many compliments on my hair. Obviously, it was a drastic change, but Jeff did such a great job that those who didn't know me thought it was my natural color. In general the experience of going to Jeff is what visiting a salon should be...fun, relaxing and unpretentious. You can get what you ask for OR you can get expert advice on how to change it up. Either way, you'll leave happy with the result. If you're looking for a new stylist, definitely give Jeff a try! read more

Johnson City is incredibly lucky to have a master stylist in the area. Jeff was the only stylist to ever cut my hair for at least 10 years... and after he left Chicago my hair was never the same. No one gives such attention to detail like Jeff (and I know a LOT of stylists because I work in the industry!) My longer hair would have benefited from his ability to seamlessly layer in a way that flows and grows out beautifully. When Jeff cut my hair I never had to struggle to come up with a good idea ...he always came through with something cool, modern, and easy to style (I'm sporting one of his cuts in my photo!) I miss his highlights too. Always flawless. Jeff really understands hair. This is from someone who knows! Go see Jeff and from your first consultation you will see that yourself! read more

Lousy and misleading. Bought a gift certificate for my wife on Christmas to see the man himself "Jeff" that the reviews brag about. Was told when I purchased the certificate that tri-colors cost around $105 - $115 but Jeff would let her know for sure when he looked at her hair. Not only did he not do the job I paid for but he charged me an additional $100. I wouldn't have minded the "bait and switch" tactic used if the haircut was at least what she had wanted. No tri color is even visible... It literally looks like he just used a curling iron and a little Sun-In spray. I had high hopes for this place but regrettably should have taken her to one of the places I talked her out of. Now I'm going to have to pay out even more money getting this corrected. read more

I give this salon a five star rating! Took my teenage granddaughter in for consultation with Jeff to see what could be done to bring her thick long overblown, flat ironed hair back to a healthy state. Jeff took plenty of time and was very patient (and knowledgable) in explaining to her the best way to take care of her hair and the products she should use. Gina, his assistant, gave her an amazing haircut and styling. She took her time and was very skilled with her scissors and blow dryer. When she finished, we could not believe the difference! My granddaughter was thrilled with the way her hair looked and how much better it even felt. I would certainly recommend this salon (and Gina) to anyone looking for a good stylist. read more

I'm a Jeff Roy fan. I can go on about his mad skills as a stylist, but quite honestly, what always set him apart from other stylists is his communication skills and tenacity for getting it right. He understands that most of us don't have the right words to describe exactly what we are looking for, so he pays really close attention and takes time to clarify. He would show me pictures from magazines to make sure we were speaking the same language. Over time, I learned to just completely trust him. Since I moved away from Jeff and his salon, I continue to appreciate that about him; I have never found anyone close to his level as far as personality, professionalism, and skills. When it comes to stylists, he's the total package. read more

I found Jeff Roy about 10 years ago when I was looking for someone to do awesome things to my hair and not be afraid to do it. He knows hair better than anyone I have ever met. I trusted him so much, that when I needed a change to my hair, I asked him what he thought would look good and I was never unhappy. He did cut and color on my hair and was always patient with me. I probably made him change my hair color 100 different times in the years I went to Jeff and he was always up for the challenge and I always left looking fabulous. Johnson City has gained an amazing talent! Chicago misses you, Jeff! ;) read more

It is awesome that we have a salon of this quality in our neighborhood. After living in a larger city and moving back here, I found myself bouncing around trying to find someone who can provide consistent quality. My search ended with Urbane Uncommon, as my style and color are always exactly what I wanted, and the relaxed but upscale environment provide for a wonderful experience. Hands down the best salon around! read more

The absolute worst. We were treated with such discourtesy and rudeness by the staff that we were shocked. We had assumed by the advertisements that it was a place that would take care of hair needs but it turned out to be a nightmare. Not only did the hairdresser not know anything about styling, or coloring the lack of professionalism was so pronounced. It took forever and then they overcharged our credit cards. read more

You won't find a better stylist in the area. If I still lived in Asheville, I'd happily make that drive to Johnson City, no question. I was a client of Jeff's (my wife as well) for 10 years in Chicago. He's a great dude with simply superior skill, style sense and a super cool attitude -- he runs a great shop. If you're in the area and HAVE HAIR, there is no excuse to not frequent Urbane Uncommon! read more

I have been all over Johnson City for the last several years looking for someone who could match the skill and vision I received when I lived in Seattle for both color and cut. My search ended with Jeff. Everything the other reviews have said is spot on. I receive a lot of compliments on my hair and it is all thanks to Jeff! read more

Jeff is a true professional in all aspects of his craft. I feel fortunate to have found him at a time I was pretty much ready to shave my head. His highlighting and color techniques transformed my hair in one session more than I could have ever expected and experienced from other stylists in a number of appointments. read more

These reviews got to be fake because this Jeff fellow is a joke. Also very nasty people to deal with if you have a complaint. Planning to sue this place over my daughters haircut. Big mistake picking this place. Never again! read more

Jeff is great. I moved to the Tri-cities from NYC, and had a hard time finding a local hairstylist I liked. I have really thick hair, and it can get crazy, but Jeff can tame it. He does awesome work! read more
