Only recently have I begun to be consumed by the world of comic books and graphic novels. I have…read morealways had a interest in them but never to any deep extent. I loved the cartoon adaptations of comics when I was a kid (like X-Men, Spiderman, and Fantastic Four), I bought the figurines, but I never actually read the comics. It was not until later in life that I started on a few graphic novels and comics. Now I am hooked. Ace Comics and Games is the perfect spot to indulge my new found love of comics. They do tend to stock more graphic novels and don't have the biggest range in their Queen Street store but the staff are awesomely knowledgeable and friendly and if they don't have something in stock they happily source it for you. You might not even notice Ace Comics unless you were specifically observant or were looking for it on purpose. From the Queen Street Mall all you see is a sign near a doorway next to Wallace Bishop. Walk up a few steps and you make your way into the kind of old looking shop but who really is looking at the paint work when the walls are lined with comics anyway. Ace comics really is a good shop to browse, buy or just generally stand in awe of the awesomeness that surrounds you.

I checked out this place (on Adam H's recommendation, thanks buddy!) today as I was passing through…read moreAnnerly. I'm really glad I did as there were some great finds in here. I could have spent about $100 in just a few minutes if I didn't mentally give myself "The Talk" .. Helen, you're allowed 2 books. This isn't the place to buy brand new releases, but there are tons of comics from the silver age (in pretty good condition), among a few newer books from the past few years. There were packs of four or five issues in a series sold together for around $20-30 which was pretty good. Single issues were anywhere between $2.20 to $20, depending on the age/rarity/condition. I picked up a Marvel Masterworks hard cover for $20. A lot of what is sold seems to be pre-owned, but had been stored well and protected in bags. I was also pretty delighted to see that they had made a little partitian in one of their Marvel boxes, labelled "Marvel women", containing Spider-Woman, Phoenix (pretty sure i'll be back for that one), Ms Marvel, She-Hulk etc. If you're after a gift for someone who likes comic books or graphic novels, this place would be ideal. The wall on your left as you walk in has some good titles. I also spotted some vintage classic car magazines that were pretty cute. Lastly, an important one for me and i'm sure any other gals who happen to like comic books - this was a no judgement zone. The owner's son was serving at the counter and was lovely. No eftpos though so grab your cash first. :)

Lets start by saying if I could leave 0 stars I would. This was by far the worst experience of…read morebuying comics I have ever had in 30 years of collecting comics. Out of the 7 Marvel comics that I purchased 3 of the where damaged. 1 was folded on one side and had spine ticks, 2nd had the top of the cover torn and a spine tick, 3rd had spine ticks. When I requested new copies be sent I was told: "Unfortunately the paper that marvel uses for their covers isn't the best and imperfections like the ones you've encountered are very common. Any that we supply you are going to be in the same condition. I have never had any order of marvel comics turn up with so much damage. I believe that these comics were not brand new and that I was sent used comics. I will add that I did return the comics and they were fully refunded and the return postage paid for by the shop. Just very disappointed with the service and the dishonesty of the staff trying to pull the wool over my eyes and blaming Marvels bad paper for the shops mishandling of their comics (Or selling used comics). Will never purchase from there again.

The store is kind of hidden back in a building so you've got to keep your eye open if you're driving around for it; there's a big sign well in front of the store however. The shop itself is well stocked with good selection of new and back issues. Plenty of graphic novels to be had as well. The place is clean, very well organized and well lit, which is always nice for a comic shop and the staff are very friendly. All their graphic novels are priced on a dollar for dollar conversion which is very nice indeed. They also carry a small assortment of geek T-shirts, action figures and other tchotchkes like bobbleheads and the like.

You know those nerds who get more excited about designing and making the party invitations than the…read moreactual party? Yeah, they're so weird. And I happen to be one. Even back in the late 90s when my birthday came around, I was to be found on our hulking IBM computer make invitations with coloured, comic sans-style fonts and the ever-classy clip art. They usually said corny things like IT'S PARTY TIME! If only Invitation House had existed in those days, and I could have saved myself some Microsoft Word-related embarrassment. Luckily, Invitation House opened not long before my 18th birthday and so I finally had access to more than Windows 95 to create my masterpiece. When you go in you'll see the the walls are floor to ceiliing stacks of paper and card of varying patterns, colours, and textures. They have sheer overlay sheets, cute pins and embellishments, ribbons, and stamps. You can pick out what you want and dream up your own invitation, or the staff can help you. You can also pay them to assemble them all for you, or take your supplies home and do it yourself. Since my 18th I have also used Invitation House's wares to make 21st invites for me and for friends' parties, and often pop in to buy some nice paper or card if I'm making something special. Such a great idea for a shop, and I bet they do great business because it's such a niche market. Well done, Invitation House!

Stickers, pens, writing pads, stamps, you name it I love it! I am unashamedly geeky in that sense. So Invitation House, which funnily enough specialises in invitations, got a little excited squeal from me as I walked through their doors. Floor to ceiling shelves of different sorts of paper. Embossed, bridal, paper with cupcakes on it, floral, dinosaurs, oriental and SO much more. There is literally paper for any occasion here. It's stunning quality and averages around $1.00-$1.50 per piece so depending on the size of the event you're hosting it could become quite expensive. In my opinion though, receiving a paper invitation in this digital age is a little taste of the past, and it sets the tone for whatever the event is that the invitation is for. If you are getting married, having an important birthday celebration or hosting some sort of event which requires an old-school invitation, I definitely suggest popping in to Invitation House for some inspiration.
