I can't sew a button back on, heck I can't even thread a needle, so I can't comment on Gardam's from a sewing aficionado's point of view, but as a layperson I've always found them to be ever so helpful. I've been to Gardam's numerous times over the years to buy fabric not for my own use, but to give to an alteration service or seamstress to mend or change an item of clothing for me. This means that whenever I go into Gardam's I have a dress in one hand and no freaking clue in the other. The ladies who work there are mostly older CWA types and they're just so, so lovely and helpful. They're happy to spend as much time with you as you need as they help you match fabric colours, textures, and types to find something suitable for whatever you need. I actually love going in there because the ladies are so sweet and get really into whatever little project you're working on. Once I went to buy fabric there because I wanted to close in a cut-out back on a dress with fabric and we had a jolly old time together umming and ahhing about what colour would look nice. Sometimes I'm tempted just to pop in to Gardam's for a cup of tea and a chat, but then I remember that it's a fabric store, not my grandma's house. read more

I can't say I'm a huge fan of this branch of Gardams Fabrics. With their main store occupying a much bigger shop space at Indooroopilly, the city store stocks only a selection of fabrics and haberdashery. Whilst the quality is the same (excellent), there just isn't enough range for my liking. It's not a good place to go looking for a specific ribbon, binding or button, but if you go with an open mind and not too tight a budget there's a good chance you'll find something you'll want to sew with. read more

Given my novice frustrations with sewing machines places like Gardam's fabrics always make me feel like giving my Bernina another whirl. Maybe the range here isn't as awe-inspiring as the north side stores or as neatly arranged as the Fabric store cousin in the valley. BUT! what it lacks in certain amenities it makes up for in charm and extremely lovely service. Some of the staff I've encountered here have been super helpful and are brimming with advice and recommendations for your sewing woes and projects. What's more the sales lady informed me that offer sewing classes as well. (Huzzah! Maybe I can finally dust off those vintage patterns!) read more

I use to feel obliged to go to Gardams because they felt like polyester to Lincraft's linen. The underdog tucked away in a dingy shop in the city while Lincraft swanned over two levels of the Myer centre. After Lincraft downsized, I struggled to support both businesses. It's true that Gardam doesn't have the wide range of fabrics that Lincraft has but they're much better than...say Spotlights. More importantly, their service has always been excellent. My mother taught me how to sew but years of negligence has made me forgotten how to render all but the simple sundresses or pyjama set. The other week, the staff at Gardam saved me hours of unpicking when I almost bought an unsuitable fabric for a dress pattern. It wasn't as if I'd asked specifically for her advice. She was just a chatty assistant who asked to see my dress pattern and picked up on my mistake. Phew! This is one shop definitely worth supporting . read more

So I went in not feeling very optimistic as I had no success in a number of other fabric stores. I had resigned myself that I would need to purchase a new dress. However, the gentleman who served me was more than helpful. He found the perfect chiffon to change the sleeves of my wedding dress and to add a sash around my waist. He even let me know the best way to cut the fabric so it sat perfectly. The gentleman who served me was so amenable and within 4 minutes, my purchase was done. Stress free. I highly recommend Gardams. Their personalised service was second to none. Their knowledge and range of fabrics are far greater than anything I have experienced. Thank you, thank you, thank you. read more
