As you walk to the back of the shop, you'll come across a lounge room environment. Four sets of red couches, all facing each other, with a coffee table, complete with chess board in the middle. Delight! The books are priced according to colour coding. On the first page of each book, you'll find either a red ($5), blue ($8), green ($12), yellow ($16), black ($20) or pink dot ($24). Don't ask me who came up with the prices, but the system they use seems to be fair and easy for everyone to use. It is a volunteer run bookshop, stocked by donations. Their method of book keeping is as quaint as the place itself. When I strolled up to the counter, after having lounged with my new discovered book, I watched the man russell around for a pencil and scrap of paper to write down details of the book he'd just sold. Annerley Community Bookshop is as comfortable as your own lounge room. It serves as a lovely refuge from the smoke and hassle that is Ipswich Road.

This store is ideal for those wanting to brush up on the classics, the shelves here are heaving with many great literary titles. I bought one of my first Isabel Allende books here and could not have been more chuffed with the price ($8!) or the friendly service I received. Keep an eye on the coffee table and art books as there is usually a gem hidden somewhere amongst the rubble. (It's where I managed to score a huge 300 page photography tome.) With cosy couches and stacks and stacks of prime reading material to review. (Someone please buy up the vintage National Geographics before I do.) Annerley community book shop is the perfect way to spend a lazy afternoon.

Of course, there's something hush hush about admitting you are an adult who colours in but after recently discovering how relaxing it can be, I'm hooked. Thankfully, this book shop has quite a good collection of these books. But that's not all. While the front portion of the store is dedicated to adult books, the back half of the store is a wonderland for the young readers. There's a great selection of kids books (excellent for the Savvy Aunty who is eager to build her niece a well rounded library) and space for them to sit and read. In fact, as I was browsing the shelves an author was about to do a book reading for kids. Prices are reasonable and honestly no more than some online sites. Plus you get to take it home with you - what's not to love? If you're local this is one worth bookmarking!

I could have spent about $100 in just a few minutes if I didn't mentally give myself "The Talk" .. Helen, you're allowed 2 books. This isn't the place to buy brand new releases, but there are tons of comics from the silver age (in pretty good condition), among a few newer books from the past few years. There were packs of four or five issues in a series sold together for around $20-30 which was pretty good. Single issues were anywhere between $2.20 to $20, depending on the age/rarity/condition. I picked up a Marvel Masterworks hard cover for $20. A lot of what is sold seems to be pre-owned, but had been stored well and protected in bags. I was also pretty delighted to see that they had made a little partitian in one of their Marvel boxes, labelled "Marvel women", containing Spider-Woman, Phoenix (pretty sure i'll be back for that one), Ms Marvel, She-Hulk etc. If you're after a gift for someone who likes comic books or graphic novels, this place would be ideal. The wall on your left as you walk in has some good titles. I also spotted some vintage classic car magazines that were pretty cute. Lastly, an important one for me and i'm sure any other gals who happen to like comic books - this was a no judgement zone. The owner's son was serving at the counter and was lovely. No eftpos though so grab your cash first. :)
