While there are often really great items in this store, the prices seem high, especially given that folks report getting very little from selling there. My real reason for not going very often is their policy of not taking sizes larger than 12. I mean -- come on, UE, have you looked at America lately??? And besides the policy, it's the scorn with which it has been communicated to me. I mean, my goodness, I was looking for a 14 -- imagine how dismissive they would be to my larger friends?! In my life experience, I have never encountered such incredibly rude and bully-like management until I entered this establishment. Today was my third time in this shop (I don't know why I went back after the other two horrible experiences) I was looking at some pants and a kind employee told me that I could try them on in the bathroom, since their dressing room is not operational. I hesitated about trying on clothes in the bathroom, but agreed anyhow. I had six pair of pants, was on the second pair of trying on, when the manager barged in yelling at me and threatening to call police on me. I told her that I had been instructed to use the bathroom to try on and she didn't believe me. She then said "I think it's very sketchy that you decided to try on clothes in the bathroom without permission. I then reminded her that it was her employee's idea. She didn't believe me. She then threatened to call police on me. I told her to place refrain, because I'm black, and I told her that I was about to leave her store. I don't know why she was so upset but I was rather shaken up, and after 35 years in the United States, I was a bit taken aback. Now I know why the people in my community had warned me about entering this store. I am black and an immigrant and I now wonder if this had anything to do with how that woman treated me. read more

Don't waste your time. The last two times I tried to consign there, they took none of my items. I brought in a bag full of clothing in excellent condition from Anthropologie, Banana Republic and JCrew recently and the clerk rudely said they were not taking items from these brands right now. Meanwhile, they had a rack of pilled sweaters from brands sold at Marshalls and TJMaxx priced at double what you could buy them for at those stores. Never consigning or buying from Urban Exchange again. You're better off with Ebay. read more

I have been going here ever since it opened in Northampton, and occasionally going to their Keene location. It's always been a must stop for me. I live in NYC and have been to many many vintage and 2nd hand stores and this is still by far my favorite. I ALWAYS find something when stopping in. I have bought countless staple items that I've worn for years. This store is truly amazing and I've found the best pieces of my wardrobe here. So much love for this store. read more

BUYER BEWARE! Defective merchandise is sold at Urban Exchange and is not returnable once purchased. While the clothing sold at UE is very carefully curated, the watches sold here are not. At all! I bought a watch for $25, put it on in the store, set it and...nothing. The watch did not work. The sales clerk said it was absolutely unreturnable and that perhaps I could maybe buy a new battery. (!!) As there was another watch of the same type/brand (Fossil), I asked if I could try that one. It did not work either. In retrospect, I should have checked to see that the watch was working before purchasing but I'd never imagine Urban Exchange would sell defective merchandise. Seems like I was wrong! If you shop here, I'd advise checking any jewelry or watches very closely before purchasing. Not pleased. Won't return. BUYER BEWARE! read more

I like the store but a problem is that it sometimes smells like Salvation Army and so do some of the clothes. Because it is consignment I think some people to go Salvation Army and Good will. They then bring in the salable brands/items. Not put out right away they get bagged in plastic with other non smelling items and they pick up the smell. Unfortunately I brought a couple things home I could not get the smell out without checking tips on line it depends on the fabric. I wish those who check out the items would notice those who have this. It is quite noticeable. read more

If you are a person of color, do yourself a favor and stay away from this establishment. While browsing, I was observed with suspicion and almost scorn. I found the manager to be very rude and insulting. When I asked the manager about consigning and what brands they like, she basically discouraged me... She was very condescending and went on and on about how selective they are and how they have certain standards... Assuming that the stuff I might bring in won't be up to their standards. My "white" neighbor highly recommended this store, so maybe white women are treated better by the all white staff and have a different experience. I just don't know how they are running a racist store in Northampton! read more

I keep going back and forth on this one. Their staff seems medium nice I guess? The worst part of Urban Exchange is their seasonal policy. I.e. If you bring them leather boots in February and they decide they're better suited to Fall, they will "store" them until then and you won't be able to get them back. And they don't tell you about this! (Might be in the fine print, but for something that's an item by item basis you'd think they'd warn you.) Definitely don't count on a quick payout, and if you're not worried about a trans-seasonal item, definitely ask. Old review: You would think that if their website said "no appointments necessary" then they wouldn't make you wait for 20 minutes. And remain in the store! God forbid you own enough clothing that you don't feel like shopping (probably why you're, you know, at a consignment shop). read more

I like that they give you a discount while they are going through your items. I also have gotten a few good deals. What I don't like is that they seem to have a quota or set percentage of a person's items that they will accept. I don't get how they are super picky about what they take, but then you see much less quality items that you can get cheaper somewhere else. The manager has been rude on more than one occasion and there is no one you can speak to above her. Northampton has an eclectic mix of people who shop there, yet they won't accept certain items of quality because the intake person doesn't particularly like/wear them even if they are hardly used, quality items and in style. These people are pretty snobby. Which is weird given that it's in the heart of NoHo but it's true! I've been here 4-5 times, and each time they ignore me, act like it's the BIGGEST chore to get me a dressing room or answer my question(s), and spend time talking to each other instead of paying attention to customers. Plus their clothes tend to border "old lady shmatas " and the prices are those of a retail store instead of a consignment operation. Seriously in this part of the state you have better luck going to Salvation Army for a unique piece of clothing and not wasting your time with this store. read more

As a customer, there is a awesome inventory of stunning pieces for all occasions. However, as consignor, the manager's unclear, unevenly applied policy of accepting (or not) clothing is condescending, insulting and nonsensical. I have been consigning here for almost 10 years with great success for both of us. Today, I was asked not to return, because I left a few goodwill tags on some of my items. It seems irrelevant to ask a potential consignor why they are consigning an item, or from where that item was originally purchased. Perhaps a question of whether they were lawfully obtained? Cute lil consignment shop in North Hampton. After you fill up on brunch at The Green Bean make sure to go next door to the Urban Exchange and reward yourself with a new dress for not eating all those gravy covered potatoes. My girlfriends and I went there on Saturday and I got myself a dress and two earrings. Everything they have in the store is classy, trendy, well kept, and lots of designer brands. Some things can be somewhat pricey, but that's coming from someone like me who never buys designer stuff because I normally can't afford it. They also have a decent shoe selection. A fair amount of dressing rooms for a small store (bonus) where the mirrors are super thin (kind of strange), but fortunately they are also skinny mirrors so you feel good too =) Also if you bring in clothes to consign, you get like a 20% discount on your purchase that day. I'm not sure if this store has improved over the years or if I just wasn't able to appreciate it before, but it has become one of my mainstays for unique, inexpensive pieces that I absolutely love! I have also had a phenomenal experience with the sales associate that is always there when I go in - Brianna (?) is super-friendly and easy-going, and has always been extremely helpful. For example: yesterday, she was willing to advise me on a pretty large pile of clothing that I was undecided about very near closing time. That was terrible timing on my part, and yet she was both honest in her assessments AND extraordinarily gracious about the whole thing! I don't know what things were like in the store before (based on previous reviews), but snobbery has absolutely not been a factor during any of my recent visits. I've been selling clothes there for years and have always found the sales people to be very condescending even though they're very young and never seem to be any style wizards. The clothes are ok- a little frumpy but occasionally you will find a gem. As far as selling, it seems to depend on which way the wind is blowing- they turn down brand new designer pieces (max azria, balmain, citizens for humanity) with the tags on still, and then accept used pieces from the gap or no known name. Go figure. Because I have found a few special things in there I would recommend a stroll around, but the prices are a little high and the experience can be not so fun sometimes. read more

This shop is full of designer and regular/good/recognizable brands of clothing and accessories. They are resale and consignment with no appointment necessary. I didn't see anything I needed to have this time but I will always check back. I think the clerk said they've been open for about a year and a half. What a great addition to Northampton!!! read more

I brought in loads of clothes to Urban Exchange and found the entire experience a huge waste of time and effort. I have never been back since. Their selection process is extremely limited. Out of hundreds of items I brought in they selected 6. The pennies I received for their sale was ridiculous. I steer people away from UE and suggest they donate their items to a worthy thrift shop instead, ie Cancer Connection Thrift Shop. Save yourself lots of work and effort for nothing. Donate instead to a worthy cause. read more

I went in with a few dresses that are in great condition but not brands that they sell there. It's not always about style and quality not brands. Anyway, they made me wait, probably so I can look around and buy something. Smart on their part but annoying for me. Also, they have a lot of preppy, white older women clothing, barely "urban". The store itself is nicely organized and I like the little mirror they provide so you can check your back out. read more

I went there only once to find out they only go up to a size 12 for clothes! Every other thrift shop i have visited in the surrounding areas have a plus size section. This type of elitist business model is not conducive to growing a company. It serves only to alienate a large group of paying customers. Not a smart move. read more

This is THE place to look for designer pieces. They always have an immense selection of Coach. I even bought my MSRP $348 Coach Hampton Tote here for $98! Best purchase I've made there so far. They have a great selection of Prada, YSL, and Gucci; as well as other brands such as Gap and Banana Republic. This is one of my favorite places to stop into when I am in town! read more

I love stopping into Urban Exchange. The staff is always warm and never pushy. I get very honest opinions as to how a piece looks. I also appreciate their attentiveness to remove clothes from my quickly-fillling arms into a dressing room. Unlike many other consignment and even regular stores, I can often find something that both fits me and that I like. Although some items are on the high end for me, if I take time to rifle through the store, I always find a variety of affordable and fashionable deals. Today, although I didn't fall in love with any clothes, I found a lovely green beret and just the style of purse I've been searching everywhere for. I'm not much of a designer shopper myself, so I haven't exchanged anything, but if I were to, this is the place I'd try first! Keep it up, Urban Exchange! read more

Helpful staff but they felt a bit disingenuine. I found a few pieces and ended up getting one top that I really liked. They have good selection, the clothing were in very good shape, their prices are average to a bit higher mainly due to the area. Would I come back here? Yes. I LOVE Urban Exchange! I have sold tons of items there and have gotten a very fair return. If you are complaining that you brought in a lot of stuff and they didn't take it, it is no doubt because it wasn't up to their standard or matched the needs of their clientele. I traveled from 30 minutes away to bring my clothes in. I brought nothing but high end designer brand new with tags or worn 1x items in sizes 8-12. Catherine Malandrino, Marc Jacobs, BCBG, Philosophy, Mara Hoffman, etc. I was told to bring them in anytime. I waited around for about an hour while the staff gossiped, put items back on the racks, and went through cosigner bags of customers who weren't even there. The store was seeing some traffic but not to the extent that they didn't have lots of downtime between helping actual customers to do these other things. One of the staff even stopped and asked me if I needed assistance at one point and I said I was waiting to have my items looked through. She just shrugged. I finally just picked up my bags and left the store. What a waste of time. read more

They are very difficult to consign with, as each clerk has their own taste preferences, and there is no set code for what they will accept and what they will refuse. If there is a set code for what they take, multiple phone calls and asking in person has not made it known. Also, they seem to prefer to take as few things from each individual as possible, I get more items consigned by showing them to the staff 1-5 items at a time than if I were to simply bring a bunch in. It says on this site that the store is handicap accessible, but I would be rather surprised if a wheel chair could make it through the store, the isles are tight without a wheel chair. read more

Buyer beware. This store sold me a damaged sweater with a shoddy repair made with mismatched thread. I did not notice until after I had purchased it as the repair was on the back underside of the arm. I was upset to find it, especially since the store's consignment policy agreement says, "all items must be less than 2 years old and in perfect condition, no hangers, no wrinkles, no odors, NO flaws." When I called the store they told me that they can not accept returns, and that I should have checked the item better. Really? Buyer beware. I will never shop here again. read more

I'm a big fan of Urban Exchange. They curate a really nice collection of clothes, shoes, and accessories. They stock well-made brands and other unique pieces. The turn over is very fast, so you can pretty much go every month and find new things. They write great descriptive notes about the clothes on the tags, and they will also make a note if there is a flaw with the garment, which I appreciate. The prices are more than Goodwill, but still certainly much less than you'd pay for new clothes. I feel it's an environmentally-friendly choice to buy used clothing vs. new, and with Urban Exchange I can find really trendy and classic pieces. read more

Urban Exchange purchases clothing from the Goodwill to sell at their store for a MUCH higher price. Not very impressed.

I really wanted to love Urban Exchange. And I have found some rather nice things there. But last fall I brought some Frye boots and a beautiful leather bag in to sell. When they didn't sell, I came in to retrieve them, but the items weren't ready for me to pick up. I was told to come in the next week, but I wasn't able to come in until the week after. In that time they had sold my items. Because I hadn't picked them up and it was after the one month period, I got nothing- not the items, and not the cash, nevermind that I would have picked them up earlier had they been ready for me. I won't be visiting Urban Exchange again. read more

Beware if you are consigning; you only receive 40% and they also charge you an additional holding fee? There are more fair consignment shops out there! The staff is pretty unfriendly and has a poor attitude. I believe they should be nicer and more fair to the consigners considering the low percentage and fees they charge for our items. My daughter and I took in several high end items, some never worn with tags still on them. More than a few of the items were sold. We got back a grand total of under $30. We were flabbergasted and have decided not to bother again. I also agree with the elevated attitude. It is rather unpleasant to be treated by someone with airs, whose blood is probably not as blue as ours! Take this review exactly for what it is worth!
