Everyone wants to charge too much, hooks my ears with clippers or doesn't actually listen to what I want done. Why the hell do they call hair gel 'product' anyway? Anyway, Nel's is awesome; good prices, fast service, and they will talk as much or as little as you want them to.

It's a solid old school spot and they know what they are doing. Great cut at a fair price. This place has been open for decades and they only have 30 reviews on Yelp. I'm thinking it's because most barber shop patrons go by word of mouth and when they find a spot they like, they like to keep their wait times to a minimum. So I'm sure i'm shooting myself in the foot a little here by throwing out a 5 star review but these guys deserve it. Solid spot.

I've personally been coming here for well over 10 years and still get my haircut here even when I visit NJ. I come exclusively to see Jay. There are other talented barbers here but Jay seems to be the most constant and consistent. The prices are decent especially considered the quality cut I get here. I feel Like the prices are fair but if you're seeking a more complex haircut, it may cost more as it's posted. The shop is located right in the "University Village" part of South Orange, about 5 blocks from downtown South Orange. There is a lot across the street to park and on street if any spots are available. There is a 'sister shop' called "Desire Hair Salon II" which identical to this one in how it's run and clientele closer to Downtown. That said, this one remains my favorite.

The part on the side and the cowlick in the back conspire to make my hair look ridiculous every single morning. Now I'm pretty good at getting it to cooperate most days, with the help of some product. What I am decidedly *not* good at, is finding a barber and/or stylist who knows what to do with it. I've gone to every kind of barbershop--Montclair hipster-tattoo places, classic American spiral pole barbershops, ladies' salons, $80 haircuts, $10 haircuts, Korean, Salvadoran, Italian--really, ask my wife, I try anything. No one knows how to cut my hair in a way that just works. They cut the part in a weird way, or they leave it too long in weird places. Usually, I fix it up myself with scissors in the bathroom, just to get it a way I can use it. But I'm not having that problem with Robert's cut. It works. It looks great. He didn't even seem to notice he was accomplishing the impossible, just chattin' 'n' clippin' away for 20 min and then done. Most haircuts make me say, "meh, a little cleanup and I'll be fine." But this time I'm thinking, "this may well do." And only $17! Hell of a deal. I won't even bother trying anywhere else.

In…read moreaddition, I'm used to the bargain salons that offer a quick cut at an equally quick price...so stepping into Pure Energy was a real treat. And let me tell you, Pure Energy has really set the bar high. I never understood how getting services done at a salon could be self care, as opposed to just maintenance, but now I know. First of all, the salon is gorgeous. This location is new (the salon relocated about a year ago), and everything looks clean, fresh, and modern. The whole vibe of the place - from the black pleather chairs, floor length mirrors, to the sink area, and even the Aveda merchandise - all exude luxury. If you want to feel like you're getting the spa experience while getting hair services, this salon is definitely for you. The stylists and employees are also wonderful. You can tell that they truly care for their customers. While I was there, I could tell that some clients had established relationships with the stylists just by how they were chit-chatting - and for those that didn't have such a relationship, those clients were still treated with respect and warmth. (I was there for a color service, so I was sitting quite awhile, and able to observe the genuine interactions!) I also had the pleasure of meeting the owner, Jen. She truly believes in her business, and her passion can be seen even as she is walking around her salon. Mario and Amanda took great care of me while I was there. It's going to be tough to go back to bargain salons after experience the true wonders of a luxury salon such as Pure Energy. If you want to treat yourself, don't hesitate to come here. Luis exceeded expectations, as I was greeted with a infectious personality that reverberates his passion for hair precision. I was impressed by his personable customer service; as I was not knowledgeable of the SMP process and was leery whether the procedure would look natural. Luis' work is quite impressive as his technique is incomparable to other top SMP specialist; as his blending methods are that of a master barber and licensed cosmetologist; sets of skills and experience many SMP artist are lacking. I am marveled how his blending techniques make SMP look like natural hair follicles. I traveled over 300 miles to have my procedures performed by Luis; with full awareness that each procedure requires 600-mile round trips. 3 trips x 600 = miles of smiles. Words cannot express the confidence, satisfaction and age reversal effects of having this procedure performed; In My Opinion (IMO) - one of the best in the SMP game!
