Lemonade from lemons. Flight from Newark to home (Oregon) was delayed. I took the ANJ Transit train from Manhattan to the Airtrain, only to find that the Airtrain was not running and the shuttle bus was not functioning well yet either, with an impossibly long line of unhappy travelers. So I backtracked one stop to Newark, and decided to take a chance and grab a haircut. The vibe of this place is great. The Barbers seemed to mostly speak Spanish, and it had a positive energy. I didn't need to wait at all (there were 4 or 5 barbers working), and my barber got started right away. He took his time and gave me a great cut, with a straight razor around the edges. The price ($20) was more than fair. And, I was able to catch a city bus to the airport just down the street without problem (you can pay with a card on the NJ Transit app). I walked in without an appointment and I was taken right away. My barber David may not have had a great command of the English language, however, he was an artist and a professional when it came to hair. He gave me a great haircut and then trimmed my beard like an expert. He balanced both sides and took his time to get it perfect. He was focused and meticulous. You just can't do better than this place! 20 bucks for a cut and 30 bucks for a cut and fade / shave. They are so extensive and take every moment to make sure you feel great. Ferry Barber Shop is a very traditional men's barber shop. They use almost exclusively the classic Pinaud-Clubman line of products (A French company now used in most American barbershops. Their motto: "Join the club. Shave like a man."). They even use a straight razor and shaving cream to square off your side burns and neck area. Most of the clientele and barbers are Portuguese or Spanish, since they're located in the Ironbound, but the head guys all speak English so don't let that worry you. Prices: $15 for haircut, $12 for shave. Quite a deal, and they take their time with electric clippers, scissors and the razors, so the $15 stretches far. Walk-ins welcome. Definitely an interesting place and since I'll be based in Newark for a while, I'm planning on making this my go-to place for haircuts. read more

This place had my loyalty. Note my use of the past tense. Today, I walked in, the door was unlocked and the sign said open. Somebody inside was still getting their hair cut. They waved me off and said, "Sorry, we close at 7." I looked down at my watch, it said 7:02. I get it, I used to work in sales and there are times when people showed up as we are closing. I never turned down a sale, and I get it if people need to go through their closing process. But seriously, it's not like I am not a regular; I have been there regularly for the last two years. And it's not like I'm not recognizable; I am probably one of the few Asian faces they see. Also, it's not like my haircut is not that complicated. So here's the deal. My time left in Newark is limited. I once told myself that so long as I live in North Jersey, I'd get my my hair cut here. Now, I'm not so sure.
