They operate by keeping the English teachers in the dark about everything, from placement down to your daily schedule. Other teachers and I were shifted around the country on a whim, instructed to teach age groups and subjects we had not prepared for. Although I had been reassured that not being a teacher in the US was fine (I have a degree in English), when I arrived in China I was instructed to lie to my Chinese coworkers about my work experience. The headmaster of the school I taught in was shocked to learn that we were not compensated after the vast amount he paid to CCEC, and we later found out from other foreign teacher groups in China that we were ripped off. The money you have access to is your own down payment, and not only did we have to wait a week to receive this once in China, but I discovered I was given 400 RNB of counterfeit bills. Questions and complaints were dodged by the leadership and we often had to resort to pressuring the underlings for information, though some spoke little English and were often kept in the dark just as much as we were. We grew accustomed to being told half-truths and straight up lies, and discovered we were teaching illegally, as CCEC had brought us into the country on tourist visas. On top of everything, the agency "pimps you out" once in China by forcing you to do promotional events in front of the various schools they've partnered with (the Chinese want white teachers for English). Do not use this agency if you want to visit and teach in China.
