Love how there's plenty of vegan options and the store has a hometown feel. The exterior looks like a red barn and you feel part of the community. Plenty of local merchandise to support surrounding neighborhoods. There's a small section to sit and eat food and they even have vinegar spray to clean the tables afterwards (so thoughtful). There's also a baby section in the corner for children to play while you're grocery shopping. No air conditioning! People got sick and faint due to the heat and humidity and this co-ops refusal to have air conditioning! Report to OSHA for unsafe work environment, and unhealthy environment for shoppers especially people on medication and the elderly. read more

I still love this little coop even when there are "bigger" ones out there. I usually get a loaf of sour dough bread. I want the whole loaf but they seem to have moved to presliced. The McNamara choc milk is heavenly. Just remember to bring the bottles back. You get a $1 for each bottle and of course it gets reused. The food is made fresh so try the soups. Rae is a fab cook. She loves cooking and I've known her for many years and she is the best. Fresh ingredients brings great flavor. read more

Dude, for real I buy the most important fixtures of my meal times at this place - veggies, bread, candy, some nuts, whatever, granola. Its cool. Shit is hot on the dime, never bought more than 5 items under an AJackson, but were talking true quality. You want quanity hit some Wal Mart dog shit. I don't consider myself a crunchy, but I'm sophisticated enough to like real taste. Shop only gets 4 stars cause the sandwich counter is straight rip off. I got some kind of fake bacon wrap (no offense and not trying to go Jeff Foxworthy here, but fake bacon?! Gimme a god damn break). Literally, the wrap was a piece of green lettuce slice of cabot cheese and dry ass wheat wrap. Like 5 bucks for two bites and then i had to eat two boxes of cheez its to stop myself from eating sparky (sparky's the spider plant that lives in my office). Another time I got one and it had a long black hair in it. Hair in food makes me want to puke and the thought of it is making drop my review down another star. 3 stars. Still gonna shop here cause it's like some kind of alternative universe where the constipation and aseptic hell of corporate soul death has yet to drag its extinctive knuckles. read more

What a splendidly cute little food market in the heart of Vermont. I'm not sure if they pledge every item to be organic, but it sure seems they have more organic items than not. Obviously, this drives up the price, but you can save 20% for working 2 hours a week, henceforth the Co-op namesake. We actually stopped in for lunch. Their selection isn't huge, but they have a few hot soups and prepared dishes on hand. I enjoyed a really nice pumpkin soup and a cous cous dish with goat cheese. They have other cool stuff like homemade nut butters, a cheese section, and local milk. Only drawback was the irrepressible cornhole working the checkout counter. I dealt with him two times, and both times I was scolded like a child. Once for the sin of not writing the PLU number on the almond butter, and once for not washing out the milk bottle I returned after drinking it for lunch while on vacation. I'm sorry, I'm from out of town, I'm not familiar with your hippie co-op communist bylaws... Cool place though. read more

There are two coops in White River Junction. This one offers a really terrific selection of produce, including a lot of local items, even out-of-season, and other more-natural choices, including a good selection of vitamins & other health and beauty products. Good selection of local breads, frozen meats, nice selection of Vermont & NH cheeses, dairy, eggs, etc. Grains, beans, and offbeat products like chickpea flour (important in Indian and Mediterranean cuisine--they make a great "pizza" from chickpea flour in Provence). In short, a terrific resource. No beer or wine. Some meats, but they're frozen. The deli serves up lunches and (very) crunchy sandwiches. I've had some weird encounters with staff members, but overall I've found people friendly, helpful and (largely) nonjudgemental. read more

Always a helpful and friendly staff. Large variety of goods. I used to go here after cross country in high school to pick up an apple and fresh bread. These days when I return to VT, I stop here as it is the only place I know that sells maple syrup in bulk. Makes my habit somewhat affordable! Only negatives: veggies in produce could be better selected and a few items on the shelf need to be checked for freshness. Since the store is relatively small, stale goods do bring my review down to 3-stars, but aside from that I'm a consistent and content customer. read more

This is my primary market. It's close to home for almost daily "perimeter shopping". Pennies for change is brilliant! Round up your bill and the money goes to local charities. So easy to shop local, fresh, feel good by giving...and even walk away with fresh flowers to feed your home. I'm such an ambassador to its triple bottom line focus and how it serves my family, I'm campaigning to be on the Board of Directors this year now that I have the time. read more

Per my wife - a great crunchy vibe. Laissez-faire chill people. Highly health focused. Diverse health food brand options but the prices are just a tad bit high. Clearly has a tight, dedicated community. Good ties to the local publish which is quite local/natural/organic food-centric. We frequent there enough that both UVCP and Woodstock's Farmers Market are both called "Mommy's favorite store" by our little ones. read more

So, if you're an out-towner or transplant who thinks "Co-Op" food store, this store fits the bill. Don't get me wrong, I sometimes go to the other co-op stores in the area, but I think of them more as the Whole Foods of the area. I greatly enjoy this store for many reasons such as reasonably-priced variety of bulk foods, produce, and health and beauty section. Staff are very friendly. There is a great cheese section and cute deli where you can get some sandwiches, salads, and soups/chili to go with a place to sit if you so choose. There is also a nice selection of hats, lunch boxes, and other miscellaneous things that could be good gifts. read more

The Upper Valley Food Co-Op, though it offers some nice local foods, is a living manifestation of upper-class, Northeastern, primarily white, politically liberal, privileged culture. The majority of their products are very overpriced and unaffordable for many Upper Valley residents. Besides being a place where only the wealthy (or those who are privileged enough to be able to devote a very large portion of their excess income to food) can afford to shop, the Upper Valley Food Co-Op staff is consistently irritable, unhelpful, culturally superior, unobservant, and uninterested. If you are from around these parts, you know the kind of people I am referring to--older hippy types whose grumpy, painfully awkward, and elitist personalities and lack of helpfulness as workers directly contradict their radical convictions about community, self-sufficiency, peace, and sustainability. I have lived in the area my whole life, and every time I go to the Upper Valley Food Co-Op (to give it another 'shot') I, and my shopping companions, are consistently ignored, talked down to, or simply not assisted at all by the staff. If this establishment offered more affordable prices, revamped their staff and only hired competent, helpful, approachable people, then it would have a better chance of receiving a broader range of customers (increased business) and would be a place that actually practices what they preach with regard to the culture/practices they promote as a, "community market with a unique atmosphere, friendly environment, and excellent customer service that is dedicated to supporting social and environmental responsibility," (quote from Upper Valley Food Co-Op website). read more

The choice is great, especially for herbal remedies and health food but the staff is bizarre and some of the older ones very abrupt. I asked a woman very pleasantly if she worked there and she glared at me and reluctantly assisted me. She apparently found my "non-local" accent annoying and spent the rest of the time watching me and my husband look around the store. Like many businesses in the Upper Valley, the Coop suffers from a lack of customer service. Another annoying thing is they had 2 groups of people hanging in the parking lot. One was a group of former druggies asking for donations.Another group was protesting something in good old Vermont fashion. I just want to go to a store and not be hassled by hippies and people collecting funds for dubious causes then getting "snarky" because I don't choose to give. I think I will order online next time or go when the peaceniks and users aren't there to hassle me. read more

I absolutely love this coop, I wish I could afford to do all my shopping here. I have volunteered here in the past, I have friends and family that work here, and I have found the people who run this coop to be very generous and lovely people. They work hard to help the community, they have many classes available on many topics. I have taken classes on fermented foods, supplements, sewing, health, gluten free cooking and more. Like all stores (and places run by humans), you may talk to an employee who is having a bad day. But this is definately not the standard treatment as some reviewers have stated. Perhaps they are confused and were at walmart.... It is a great store. read more

Great place to hang out, with a friendly, knowledgeable and helpful staff. Carries the best variety of local produce of any store I know of in the area, and it's mostly organic or "ecologically" grown. Fresh and high quality. Save by shopping from the bulk bins (grains, cereals, beans, herbs, spices, maple syrup and more). You may pay more for some other items, but you get a great value for the price. Prices here can be higher than supermarkets for obvious and not so obvious reasons: they don't sell conventionally grown processed food with a lot of government-subsidized ingredients; they pay a fair price to local farmers and producers; they carry quite a few specialty items; they pay the staff a decent wage; and they don't have economies of scale like big chains. But you can earn a 20% discount by becoming a volunteer "super worker," which goes a long way to making shopping here more affordable. And, remember, buy in bulk! PS-they have a small bakery, hot bar and grab & go case with sandwiches and salads, too. read more

This is a fantastic store and an old-timey co-op. Customer service is friendly and caring. The staff really go above and beyond. The atmosphere is homey and welcoming. They specialize in LOCAL, LOCAL, LOCAL as well as organic produce, bulk staples and supplements. There are so many products that you cannot find anywhere else in the Upper Valley. These folks care about impact and are dedicated to education and service. Did you know they have classes and workshops throughout the year, many of which are free and open to the public? The membership is affordable and the return is instant. There are countless discounts given to members as they make purchases, verses at the end of the year...maybe. We like how this Co-op operates and thinks about giving back to its members. And we love the fresh food at the Sweet Lilac Deli! Rae's maple cornbread is sometimes the only thing to get me out of bed in the morning! read more
