I was unexpectedly admitted earlier this month to UPMC Shadyside, after first going to the UPMC Urgent Care facility across the street.

There were many times that the physician and staff dropped the ball when it came to the next step or even in returning our phone calls. We were left in the dark about my husband's treatment plan. We were left on our own until we met with Sue in the Palliative Care Department. She helped us tremendously. She spoke with the oncologist on our behalf. Thank you Sue! Otherwise I don't want to take my husband back there. Such unprofessional people!

Dr. Arlan Mintz of the neurology department came to my rescue last year by getting me into see one…read moreof the best neurosurgeons on the West Coast (at UCSF, which seem to have an admittance policy best described as "patient-averse"). So while visiting Pittsburgh I stopped by to meet him in person. First of all, getting set-up in UPMCs patient system was a breeze (you'd think all hospitals would have this streamlined) and all of the staff were friendly, happy and helpful. Dr. Mintz also provided me with some additional (and much needed) insight into the potential cause of some post-surgery issues I've been having. Hopefully you will never need to be admitted to a cancer center, but in the event you ever receive the worst news you could imagine, the staff here really does care, which can mean the difference between living and dying when fatal white spheres show up on an MRI.

I would not Recommend going to the UPMC Hillman Cancer Cener or any UPMC facilities. It is a shame…read morebecause the Doctor was super nice, but the administrative staff is just a hot mess. I just moved here from out of state and had to find a new Oncologist. I decided to try the UPMC Cancer Center. Anyone that has cancer knows how stressful it is to try a new doctor and to have to go see them every six months. We scheduled our appointment for September 2025. I called UPMC a week before to see if they were able to get my files from my previous cancer doctor. They stated that they did. The day of my first appointment to meet with the new doctor they were going through a system change which caused us to have to be there for 6 hours. I am not sure why you would schedule a new patient to come in when the new computer system is going live that day. It is already stressful enough trying a new doctor but to have to wait 4 hours to see him causes more stress. When I did finally get to see him, he stated that they had not received any of my medical files. Once I finished seeing him, they had me do blood work. Before they did it, I specifically asked if it would be covered under my plan, they said yes. Well, it was not. When I called to speak to someone at the cancer center the receptionist stated that she would have someone call me back. No one did. When I went to follow up a week and half later the receptionist stated that she was going to transfer me to Jenn who handles the insurance info. I spoke to Jenn, and she states that she is not responsible for determining where the lab work is sent. She just sends it to the pathology group, and they just figure it out. Funny part is I spoke to the Pathology group prior and they stated that it was UPMC Job to check the patients insurance plan prior to sending. Being a Benefits Coordinator in my past career I know that the pathology group was correct it is UPMC Responsibility. When I questioned Jenn, she became really nasty. The girl should not have the job she has. She has no customer service skills, and she really does not know her job. It is people like her that are making UPMC not a good place to go if you have medical issues. Once I left my appointment that day, I was told I have to come back in 30 days to go over my numbers with the doctor. It is bad enough waiting a week for your results but 30days. Well, when I went back for a follow up appointment it was not even with the doctor, they gave me a nurse to go over my numbers. The Nurse really did not seem to know too much about CLL. If she was familiar with CLL she would know that the focus is not just on my white blood cell count it is on multiple other things. Plus, our numbers tend to fluctuate. Then she proceeds to tell me that she needs me to come back in another 30 days to discuss my numbers with the doctor. So basically, they wasted my time and money again. I said no, I had discussed them with my prior doctor and he stated they were fine. When I went to leave UPMC, they were supposed to set up a dermatology appointment, but they forgot. I had to call them back. They could not get me an appointment until March. So, I decided to try Geisinger. I had to drive an hour and half to the Geisinger Dermatology group, but I was able to get an appointment for December 29th. I would definitely recommend going to Geisinger for all your health care needs. The staff was really nice and was quick to get all my appointments set up at one time. Like I said the doctor was great at UPMC, but the administrative staff was terrible and just caused more stress.
