I had to stay overnight 2 days and got put in a room right across from nurses station. The night shift whooped and cackled ALL NIGHT that went straight thru a solid 2" oak door. Updated review. UPMC East offers services such as the Emergency Department, Imaging, UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, Heart and Vascular Institute, Intensive Care Unit, Rehab Institute, and many others. One of my family members had a serious but not life-threatening acute health problem, and an ambulance took her to UPMC East's Emergency Department. I accompanied my family member for most of her time here. The Registered Nurses and physician had problems with communicating and coordinating care, but in the end, my family member ended up being OK until she could go to another healthcare facility. The employees never said their names or job titles, so my family member had no idea who her registered nurse or physician were. I think that they should say at least say their job titles if not also their first names. The assessment could have been more thorough. My family member said that zero employees used their eyes to look at her problematic body part. The employees did run blood work, but the two registered nurses and the physician did not point out a few high or low laboratory values. (I myself am a registered nurse, and I would have discussed them.) The employees performed no therapeutic procedure on my family member. (Instead, after discharge, she went to a physician at another healthcare facility to receive a procedure.) My family member's registered nurse was busy with another patient, so she had another registered nurse try to discharge my family member. This registered nurse did not explain the frequency or dose for a medication until we asked, and she said that the physician would come by to administer it. Minutes later, the physician came by and did not administer the medication. My family member went home with the medication. In summary, my family member spent hours of time and probably thousands of dollars at this emergency department to receive only laboratory results. read more

I've been going to this hospital for several years now for testing because of kidney failure then follow up blood work after my kidney transplant but mostly blood work and I must say I love this hospital especially the staff at the labs. Because of my change of insurance because I've retired I now have to go elsewhere. But what I don't understand is I will be covered under UPMC for life PPO and I'm not aloud to have blood work at UPMC. I will truly miss my friends/staff at the lab having my blood drawn. Just keep in mind everyone that not everyone will be happy with any establishment. Like I said, my personal opinion is that this hospital is exceptionally good. read more

I was seen at the ER last week for intense pain. Turns out I had a kidney stone erupting from my kidney and basically my blood levels were crashing. Could have gone to sepsis but the nurses and doctors took great care of me and ran all the right tests. Very grateful for their expertise and care! read more

I know the ERs are filled with sick people now with the flu season but we were there for a little over 4 hours with my mom ... who has dementia . She never got out of the ER waiting room .... she begged us and was crying she couldn't take it any more. she was having shortness of breath and her oxygen levels were low. No compassion. it was so terrible and pitiful that a hospital that supposed to put the patient first can be so cruel...i think they should have made an exception for an 88 year old woman . .... i would give this ER a zero if i could. we had to leave and not get her seen .. it makes you feel helpless when u go to a hospital for help in an emergency and there is no help...If you are looking to get in a room in any reasonable length of time look elsewhere ... don't go to this emergency room....Go to Forbes . read more

Ok my surgeon did a good job but he could have operated on me at Passavant. Next time. I won't get into the details of what happened actually but the bad service started when I had to have an enema and the nurse did not administer it correctly. I had bleeding for a while afterwards. PT/OT people did not like me because I needed to do my recovery, with their help, my way. My friend committed suicide on April 1st. They did not let me go to the funeral. I was very upset. They almost kicked me out. Then when I went back just to show them that I was doing good, they were scared I take it. I actually got charged with trespassing and have to go to court. I promise I will not recommend this hospital to anyone. If I'm dyeing and close to this hospital I want them to pass it up. Take me to Forbes. read more

today I had a terrible experience. I went for just a boil and I came at 11:13pm, they took me to the back at at 1:43am. All I got was blankets and a gown no one ever checked on me I kept calling for help on the remote and the nurse kept explaining that there was only one doctor available but it shouldn't take 7 hours just for ER. Nurses very unprofessional I asked to speak with a manager he said he would get one ,30 minutes Pass by still no response I then got dressed when I exited the room the nurse was on his phone. Took the kiddo here because she had a lump in her foot that came out nowhere. She's got Hemophilia A, so anything like that can be worrisome since we don't know if the lump is caused by internal bleeding or not, especially since it came up so quickly. The nurses were great. She had three nurses attending to her in triage as they were having difficulty finding a pulse in her foot (which they finally managed to do). They took her straight to a room as directed by the paper we handed them from the Hemophilia Center, given to us should she ever need to go to an ER. The doctor was also great. She explained things thoroughly and made sure we had no questions before discharging the kiddo. One of the reasons I knocked it down two stars is because of the rude woman who checked us in when we first arrived. I tried to give her the paper from the Hemophilia Center because it specifically states to make sure the patient is seen right away because of the possibility of internal bleeding. The woman refused to take it, saying that was for the nurse, not her. No, it's for her to give to the triage nurse to make sure the kiddo isn't left sitting in the waiting room for hours waiting to be triaged. But she didn't care. She made us sit in the waiting room until the triage nurse got to us. The other reason was the disgusting waiting room! It looked like it hadn't been cleaned in days. The photo I'm posting is only a small portion of the room. There were used blankets, used tissues (gross), empty soda bottles, and so on everywhere, including under the signs stating the hospital's COVID protocols. When I took this photo, there was no longer anyone in the waiting room. But these particular tables and chairs were empty when we first walked in. read more

I have been to this hospital many times as a visitor, this afternoon as a patient in need of the emergency room. Clean, friendly and accommodating to my need. I didn't wait long in the waiting room. The area was clean, full of natural light and relaxing. I was taking to a room in the emergency area, almost instantly and was treated well from the caring and friendly staff. I avoid hospitals as much as possible, but I have to say this was a very good experience. read more

Some quick background: I hate hospitals. I hate going to see the doctor. UPMC is different. My wife, the woman I love more than life itself, had cancer, pretty bad. They took great care of her and she's on the road to recovery. I usually only go there when I get hurt. Everyone at UPMC East is great. They may be maxxed out since ER visits have been climbing, but they're friendly and professional. When I have to go to get seen, I'm glad I have UPMC. The only negative was when I hurt my foot a few weeks ago. It was very painful. I asked them if they could just cut it off and fix it, then when it's ready let me know and I'd go back with some duct tape to put it back on. I was here just this Wednesday for my treat nut allergy. The staff was all very nice and caring. They even took me right away after I was throwing up and they had an full waiting room. Than they put me on an heart monitor and meds right away and kept me to make sure I felt better. Once I clearly felt better, they discharged me and I headed back home. I rushed my wife with severe abdominal pain to upmc east Monroeville. We arrived at the emergency room around 6pm. We sat in the waiting area where there was a woman laying down and coughing non stop. She should have been isolated. We didn't get taken back until 8pm. The nurse showed us to a room and it's 9pm and we're still waiting. The doctor came in and said I'll order some pain medicine. It's 9pm and my wife is still in pain and still hasn't received anything to make her comfortable. We are leaving. What a mismanaged Hospital. Hospital employees willfully defied covid-19 precautions as they worked inside the covid-19 unit, disregarding personal health and the safety of hospital patients. A member of the dietary department delivered trays of food to positive covid-19 patients inside the covid unit of the hospital. While delivering these trays of food to positive covid patients a dietary employee proceeded to go out-of-sight while doffing contaminated PPE that is required to be worn inside of the covid unit at all times. This employee was exposed to the contaminated environment inside the covid-19 unit occupied by patients positive for covid-19. The employee willfully exposed herself to covid-19 by wearing no respiratory protection, gown, or gloves as she ate off disposable patient food trays delivered to, and removed from positive covid patients rooms inside of the covid-19 unit. The employee was observed by other department staff donning PPE to enter into the hallways to enter and exit covid-19 patients rooms and doffing PPE again while out of sight to eat off patient trays. The incident was reported to the appropriate supervising staff to follow proper reporting protocols and promptly ignored and attempted to be covered up. The supervising staff immediately refused to report the incident as required by the procedures on reporting exposures to covid-19 and instructed the reporting employee to drop the subject and refused to report the incident. It is to my best belief UPMC East failed to protect patients from exposure to Covid-19. Hospital employees willfully exposed themselves to covid-19 and supervisors of hospital employees who heard of these incidents instructed staff to stop talking about it and refused to report it. read more

UPMC EAST emergency room is horrible. The registration staff had poor communication with the nurses. My husband and family waited in the waiting room for hours with no update about my health and condition. My husband went to the nurse station numerous times asking to go back and they would not allow him. During my visit I had a doctor and nurse that used profanity towards me during my visit and made me feel alone!! I'm sitting here now with my wife, it's been over 12 hours and still don't have a room. Every nurse we get has a different answer, from they are cleaning it to they just kicked someone out because they can't be with her, to..,it goes on forever. Nobody is giving us any answers and all those devices will make their noises and nobody comes to check on it. A different nurse comes in and has to get one of my wife's two nurses to help. Avoid at all costs. Was in ER tonight with my 89 yo mom. Front desk folks weee great. Nursing staff and doctor all major attitudes on a rare Saturday night when it wasn't busy. There was literally no one in the waiting room at 6pm when we arrived we got right thru. I didn't see any beds filled in our section yet after 4 hours I couldn't get a nurse to complete a ten min procedure so I could get my mom home who was exhausted. They kept saying our nurse was in critical so I asked for another nurse to do it I saw no less than 3-4 sitting around at the desks. I asked them to remove the wires for vitals from my mom that we had been here more than four hours and they laughed and said "you're not the only one". We walked out and the waiting room was empty around 10 pm. Get my mom home and her shirt was soaked with blood cuz they didn't bandage her properly. Rude. Ignorant. Uncaring. To laugh at your visitors. Not sure what they teach their staff at UPMC it certainly isn't kindness or empathy toward what folks are going thru. If it was extremely busy, as I have seen before, u would understand. It wasn't. I looked down the hall and saw our doctor and nurses standing around talking. I hope to never have a reason to go here again. This isn't the first time we've had a bad experience. There's never a good one at UPMC East. read more

Absolutely horrible. My mother fell and cut her leg. Because the urget care was closed and i couldn't stop the beeding we called the ambulance. She arrived at the hospital at 7pm. They took her vitals and did nothing else. I arrived at 7:10 and called the er. When i called and gave her name i was curtly told that she had only been there 10 min. I was informed that as a support person i could go in and she her. I went to the front desk. 1 lady was on the phone working, the other took my information and told me when she got a phone she would let them know in the er and they would call me. Evidently only 1 phone works at the desk. I sat for 1 1/2 hours. By the several of the staff pull down thier masks to chat with each other. The most urgent matter seemed to be some door dash deliveries. I finally went up to the lady that had been working initially and she was horrified that i was ignored for all that time by the girl next to her. She took me straight back to mom's room. My mother was livid when i got in there. After taking her vitals and putting her in the room nobody saw her till she started yelling at 8pm. They left her soaking thru the bed and bandages they put a pad under her. At 8:15 she got up. And went to the nurses station. They finally sent somone in to change her bandage. He said that looks bad you definitely need stitches but im not a surgeon. He gave her some wet towels to try to wipe the blood off her leg and foot herself. I finally got to see her at 8:40 she was livid. At 9pm after seeing no one she took off the oximeter and said im leaving. We got out to the waiting room where the only decent worker asked if there was a problem. She then got the charge nurse. (No people skills and dumb as a bag of rocks) so my mother wasted 2 hrs there with no treatment but had to get home to my father who had been discharged yesterday from a heart condition problem. One of the worst experiences of our lives. My mother in law who is 94 arrived at around 7 PM on 7/13 by ambulance from the senior living facility due to swelling, tenderness and purple color in her feet. My wife and I arrived shortly after and found her sitting in a wheelchair in the waiting room. We tried to inquire on when she was going to be seen and rudely were told that they were short staffed and waiting on beds and they did not have access to information on when people would be seen. Well the wait was slightly over 13 hours (yes I said 13) as she was not called until after 8 AM the next day on the 14th. So yes my wife and her 94 year old mother and I stayed in the waiting room together for 13+ hours before she was seen. Not bad for what is supposed to be one of the premiere hospitals in the area as others waited almost 22 hours before their loved one was seen. This is absolutely unacceptable for a USA hospital. Not once were we asked if we needed anything or were able to get an update on when she would be seen until the shift change came in at 7 AM on the 14th when a very efficient and caring individual took over at the waiting room desk. This individual was most helpful and was able to tell us that there were still 8 individuals before us and offered to get us something to drink as well as had the charge nurse come out to speak with us as well as others still waiting to explain the situation. To top it off during the evening I also tripped and fell when I tried to step over the leg of a wheelchair in the waiting room area after an individual who was previously occupying it left it behind as she could not wait any longer. Not long after I fell I did get a little attention as I assume they were concerned I might sue. They provided an ice pack for my knee and offered for me to be seen if I liked. I declined but I do have a bruised and sore knee where I hit the floor. It should be noted that as we waited through the night many others also left without treatment as they could not wait any longer. After being called around 8 AM to be seen it took another 3 1/2 hours before my mother in law was ready to be discharged. For a total of 17 hours. This was a horrible experience for everyone as I am sure there are many hard working and caring individuals who work at the hospital however the emergency department is apparently totally mismanaged. read more

This hospital is indeed the worst I have ever been too. Waited 4hrs to be seen. Physicians assistant came in to tell me, that emergency rooms are for people that are dying. He went on to tell me that the people who need medical attention could not get help because people come in that should not be there! I guess that was a jab at me and anyone else who is in extreme pain,or came to ER . It's bad enough to feel so crummy and then have someone come in and tell you that there is nothing they can do. This hospital has saved the lives of these 2 young people, which how often do you hear that? We have sworn to only this hospital for the rest of our lives. On, 2/22/2019 I Took my 9yr. old Grandson to UPMC East. He needed 4 stitches in his hand, I still can't wrap my head around this even as I write this review. We were called back to the E.R. dept. and taken to a "HALLWAY THAT WAS NO MORE THAN 25 FT. FROM A DOOR WHERE WORKERS WE'RE TAKING BINS OF GARBAGE TO DISPOSE OF". This, was his first Experience with getting stitches. He had to Endure other patients walking by as the were on their way getting x-rays or what not. patients were staring at him as he was getting stitched up!!! My father in law has been staying here for 3 weeks. I travel 4 hours to come and see him and the nurses are so rude. I get it-- nurses have a hard job. But, he waits to eat for an hour, and he can't until he uses the bathroom and brushes his teeth. We ring for a nurse and without fail, the nurses don't show up for at least an hour. The doctor comes and suddenly, they are all over it. I simply asked the nurse again for help because I cannot lift him and she gave me complete attitude about giving the patient next door pills. The doctor treated me as if I was an idiot (I have a degree in microbiology and an background in working in the medical field), and the nurse literally walked away from me in mid-conversation. The most rude, inconsiderate nurse and the worst bedside manner I've ever had in a doctor. I will never go back. I've also discovered that Dr. Jeremy Gilbert referred me to the wrong type of specialist. I'm being billed $400 for the privilege of being mocked by a UPMC physician. I'm editing this review to underscore how incompetent Dr. Jeremy Gilbert is. The problem I went for was that I couldn't open my jaw more than about 10-15mm. I ended up having surgery because the disc in my TM joint had slipped out of place and adhered to my cheek bone. No thanks to UPMC East. read more

Well, I'll add one more to the list of extremely poor ER reviews. Arrived at 6am with my daughter in severe pain, in the 10 scale. I told the man at the intake counter they needed to take her in immediately and he told me she would have to wait until he processed blah blah. He was clearly annoyed and really just an a$$hole quite frankly. He printed the arm band and I told him to cal the nurses NOW. He said it would pop up on the screen and they would come. I walked to the ER door and could see 10 nurses standing and sitting around talking, laughing, or looking off into space bored. I knocked on the door until a pissy nurse strolled (yes strolled as in no hurry here guys) out and in asked me what the problem was. She said her name just came up on the board. So clearly her name was on the board but it was more important to finish the jokes and gossip. So incredibly unprofessional and uncaring. Keep driving a couple miles down the road to Forbes.
