We saw that this small Hot Dog Cart was highlighted in trip advisor so we decided to stop when we…read moresaw him on our way to the Kapoho Tidepools. He was situated with a flag on the corner of Kapoho Rd (132) and Pohoiki Rd. Two hot dogs came out to $12.50. I got the Buffalo Cheesy Jalapeno Brat and the husband got the Reindeer Polish Dog. Both hot dogs were juicy and full of flavor. The hot dog man was playing cards with his buddies when we pulled up but promptly helped us and explained his menu to us to help us made a decision. He was super friendly and welcoming. He grilled the hot dogs and Hawaiian sweet buns on the grill and it was ready in about 5 minutes. He has the usual condiments like ketchup, mustard, BBQ sauce, relish and onion and two unique toppings( the jalapeno relish and spicy coconut jelly(?)). I LOVED the heat the jalapeno relish added to the hot dog but beware, it is quite spicy. The coconut jelly is sweet with a hint of spicy which was good as well. There's no chairs or table to sit at and eat but it's a quick, stand up meal.

Jesse imports all his elk, reindeer, and buffalo products straight from Alaska, where he used to live. I've tried them all and can't decide which is most delicious, so... have to try them all again. Warning: the elk "mini sliders" are huge... enough to share. The dogs are generously sized too. UPDATE: when I wrote the review the Hot Dog Guy was located in front of HPM hardware in Hilo, but now he is back in his regular spot at the intersection of Hwy 132 and Pohoiki Road near Pahoa. If you are driving from Pahoa towards Kapoho on a Monday-Friday between 9:30-3:30, you will see his truck on the right hand side of the road just past Lava Tree Park.

Mr Cow has good Korean hot dogs but they also have a mean lemonade slush! It was super hot in Hilo…read moreand I needed something cold. I found the foot court and when I went inside I saw the slush machines in Mr Cow! Yes!!! I had no cash so I had to use Apple Pay. I saw their pad to pay so I knew I was good to go! I ordered the slush and was ready to say "small" when I saw a sign that said "1 size only"!!!!!!! There was another sign that said credit card minimum $5. Uh oh! The lemonade was $4.69. I asked if needed to buy something else and they said no. So I decided to tip more and wouldn't you know it? The pad which usually rips you off with 15%,20% and 25% had ..... nothing! The one time I DID want to tip these nice workers, there was nothing. Just pay.... I told them to tell their boss to put the tip buttons in so they can make more money.

The cool thing about this place is that you can choose from a whole sausage, mozzarella cheese, and cheddar cheese in the corn dog or do half and half. More flavor combo options! We decided to try out the Flaming Cheetah, Fried Potato, and Yam-yam corn dogs with half sausage and half mozzarella in each. Our favorite was the Fried Potato followed by the Yam-yam, and then the Flaming Cheetah. The Flaming Cheetah had a sweet sauce on it that took away from the spicy Cheetos crumb topping. More spice would've been nice. Overall, I'd say give Mr Cow corn dogs a try. They're not something I would eat all the time since they're really filling, but they make a fun treat once in a while.

Home of the loco moco! Came to Cafe 100 on a Friday for lunch with a large group of students, and…read morethis was the perfect spot to grab a quick lunch. There were various options for everyone and easy ordering on the kiosk with pictures, which was super helpful. The dining area is spacious and breezy. I got a green river and portugese sausage loco moco, which are two of my favorite things! A lot of places don't have green river, so it was a pleasant surprise to find it being sold here. The Portuguese sausage was juicy and the gravy was the perfect consistency for the loco moco. I loved how many different meat options they had for their loco mocos. Definitely recommend coming here for a quick bite!

As a born-and-raised local, rice, gravy, and eggs will win me over every time, and I really wanted to love this place for the history alone. I'll be honest though -- the hype set the bar high, and I left a little let down. The regular loco moco was just okay. The hamburger patty tasted pre-made or frozen, though the gravy was solid (thank goodness). The beef stew also tasted pre-made and was lighter on the tomato flavor than I prefer. I ordered the steak as well (around $30), and it came out very well done. On the positive side, they offer a ton of plate lunch options, the space is extremely well kept for a local diner, and there's plenty of parking. It's covered outdoor seating only, but it's comfortable and clean. What surprised me most was the lack of visible history. I expected to see more storytelling about the loco moco origins -- photos, signage, staff sharing pride in it -- something that really leaned into that legacy. It felt a little missing. Still glad I tried it for the experience, but for me, it didn't quite live up to the legendary reputation.

Hilo and loco mocos go hand in hand. No other island in the chain of Hawai'i or anywhere else in…read morethe world does the loco moco rate with what's served on Hawai'i island. K's maintains that claim with flying colors. Awesome gravy, perfectly cooked easy over eggs, and decent hamburger patties make this a must for that similar loco moco craze that I experienced during this recent trip home to Hilo. I promise you, you can't go wrong here. Lots of parking, lots of covered seating, very friendly service, lots to choose from menu-wise, and bonus being attached to a liquor store (Kadota's). It's been years since I've been here, I'm so happy to see they're still around. Slightly disappointed i have to order mac salad separately, and a double loco is mot the standard large plate lunch size, rather a slight smaller. That's ok, honestly, I shouldn't be eating so much stuff that is the loco moco for one meal anyway, much less having one 3 days in a row. But, I'll be back when I'm back. Delicious.

The food felt like the kind of dependable, everyday local grindz you come back for, especially if you want something hearty and familiar. The Shoyu Chicken had that savory, home-style flavor, and the Chicken Papaya was a nice change of pace with a lighter, slightly sweet savory balance. Service was quick enough for a casual meal, and the vibe is very old-school drive-in in the best way.
