Would I recommend it, NO. Unfortunately that is what I have from work. My recommendation for anybody time is to plan your medical leave, if aplicable, and get all the paper word ready a week. Make sure that your doctor(s) send ALL THE PAPERR work necessary and extra to prevent any excuses from UNUM. Step 2, RECORD ALL THE CALLS!!! Video or audio. They way you can hold them accountable for any future " we did not said that". It will save you a lot of time and you can offer to send them a copy. This will acelerare any issues or steps the need to take in case they need to retry any calls from their end. Also, if you have medical leave they will try to low ball you. DONT LET THEM. if the doctor says that you need to be out fro "X" and it was approved, don't let them trick you into believing that they can only cover a short time; LIES!!! They try to day to mee in November by sayin that they can only cover 2 weeks when the doctors said 2 months. I did not let them fool me. Hopefully, not everything is bad. There are some decent employees that do have some grey mass inside their skull, some others, well not so much. I gave 2 star just because of the good experience I had after finally getting in touch with someone with brain. read more

I first filed a claim with this company back in February. It is now May and they have closed out the claim a number of times and a week later I get my mail stating I need paperwork by a certain date or they will close my case which they closed a week prior to me receiving the paperwork they want. When trying to call them I never am able to speak to someone and no matter what time of the day it is they will call me back tomorrow. I have NEVER received a call back. Every time I call the person I speak to does not know what is holding up the claim and my doctor has faxed over the information that they request at least 5 different times. Now my claim is under review by someone that has no medical back ground. Who are they to review my case and go against what the doctors are recommending? This is the poorest run company that heaven forbid the employees have to talk to someone. At this point I would rather kill myself than deal with these people anymore. They don't return calls even though they say they will. I have had 1 out of 5 return call requests completed. Their 5 day turn around is an excuse to delay. My claim was started on the 23rd and I am still waiting. Then there is the 5 day correspondence rule where if they request a document 10 days after the claim is started when they get the documents they have 5 days to review with no rush or red flags. I have asked to speak to supervisors with no call back as no one is EVER available to answer calls. My employer sent all the paperwork in and today 1/9 they just sent a letter requesting my payroll information to be sent which is clearly already uploaded and has been. I have seen that there are class action law suits. When your down and they are supposed to be helping they keep you at the back of the line. read more

This past year and next year our voluntary hospital, accident, and critical illness is covered by UNUM. Previously we had AllState and they were 110% better than UNUM for coverage. UNUM drags their feet on paying claims and will even say that a hospital stay was due to a pre-existing condition to not have to pay out the claims. I mean you find this out about 3 or 4 months after filing the claim. Because they offer such crappy coverage I'm electing to not pick these coverages in 2024 and save more money in the premiums than what they cover. I normally don't leave reviews, but I felt it was important to share my experience so others don't waste their time and money like I did. I went to Speliacit Madison expecting professional help and reliable service, but unfortunately, that was far from what I received. Not only did they fail to help me in any meaningful way, but they also based their entire assessment on the opinion of just one examiner -- an individual who is not even accredited by the Better Business Bureau (BBB) or any other recognized authority. That's not just unprofessional, it's irresponsible. You can't make serious decisions or give advice based on someone with no real credentials. The lack of proper vetting and the reliance on such a questionable source of information really shows how incompetent and careless this place is when it comes to handling serious matters. I purchased a Unum policy through my employer, opting for quarterly paper billing. There are only a few companies I trust to use electronic billing and I never allow any company to auto-charge my credit card, or auto-debit my checking account--that's like handing your wallet to a near-stranger and trusting them to only take out the money you said they could have. I certainly don't trust Unum. Yesterday, March 15, 2025, my March invoice arrived in the mail. The due date for my payment was March 13, 2025 so by the time my statement arrived, my payment was already two days late, thanks to Unum's inability to mail an invoice on time. To ensure no lapse in my policy, I had to use their crummy website (instead of my online banking website) to make a one-time payment. I looked on Unum's dumpster fire of a website for a place to contact them so I could file a complaint about their untimely billing. Unfortunately, like many terrible companies, Unum's website uses only pre-fab dropdown categories which, of course, are designed to limit inquiries to the issues Unum wants to address--not the issues their policyholders want to raise. To make matters worse, upon logging in to Unum's website, I was auto-directed to a page on which I would be forced to agree to electronic billing in order to use the website at all. When I declined, I got a pop-up basically saying "if you don't agree to electronic billing, go away and don't ever come back because now, you can't use our website for anything at all". If you want a good laugh, Google "Unum reviews". Not surprisingly, the reviews on Unum's website--there are exactly four--are all glowing, 5-star commentaries. All four reviews are undated and list only a first-name. Presumably, they were written by Unum's marketing team. There's a "Review all testimonials" button. When I clicked it, only the same four reviews appeared, so presumably, these four reviews are the only ones Unum wants anyone to see. And, there is no place for a consumer to actually write a new review so I'm wondering how the four reviewers--"Desiree", "Jineen", "Dale" and "Bob"--were able to post their comments. Again, these "reviews" smack of having been internally created by one of Unum's paid toadies. In short, this company goes out of its way to provide zero customer service and to avoid, deflect or ignore policyholder complaints. I only hope that when my survivors have to actually cash in my policy, they won't have to file a Department of Insurance complaint in order to get paid. This company sucks. If you've not already purchased a policy from them, I suggest you look elsewhere. read more

Took MA paid family leave through them.. I had to call them 4 times from Europe.. started the leave process on May 19 gave the dates to unum.. 3 weeks into my leave in July 30th they still did not communicate to my employer.. I called them weekly in the past weeks still just promises...Customer service knows nothing .they have to direct you to your case worker. Case worker sat on my docs and was impossible to reach... My employer called me to let me know that Unum still did not send my leave details to them so my employer also not paying me now. I would not recommend Unum. Also, the phone robot asks you if you want to take a survey.. I click yes but then CSR intentionally did not hang up for many minutes so I can't take the survey read more

If I could give a negative star rating I would! This company is the worst! Causes more hardship and aggravation when you need to use the benefits YOU PAY FOR! No one talks to each other, they send emails for every little thing that is pointless, you can never speak with your "representative", a supervisor is NEVER available, they read off script, they don't want to help you, they want to frustrate you so that you give up! If I could give '0' stars i would.... I had surgery in Dec and was out inly 2 weeks. For starters, they never seemed to 'receive' my doctor's forms, although i witnessed them fax them one of the times. Came back to work PT and thays where all the headache really started. I have only received ONE payment since returning back PT. My timesheets have been turned in. I keep getting told '...it's a different department that handles that type of payment and they are still reviewing your claim....'. For almost a dang month!?! This is not right. I wish there was something that could be done about them. We are working class people and depend on our paychecks. Our bills don't get paid based on IOU's... I'm so glad our company switched to another at the beginning of this year. At least the next time if I have to go out for something, I won't have to deal with this bunch! read more

Every time I contacted them for an update or clarity about my life insurance policy their behavior was always SUSPICIOUS / DISHONEST. I was always worried that when I died they would give my loved ones the run around and not pay the benefits that I had been paying for over the years. Something finally clicked in my head and told me to take a closer look at this company. And what did I find?! Thousands of people having the same issues as mine. If I could give this company a -100, I would. The representatives try their best but fall short . This could be due to the language barrier as they obviously outsource. It took my claim owner múltiple calls to management to even get a call back. When I spoke with her finally, she was talking about how she spoke to me to the rep; unbeknownst to her, i was on the phone. When I asked questions, all i got was a sigh, she mentioned she was sick, and she transferred me to her boss. Upper mgmt is extremely more helpful than the claim owners. I understand she was ill, but at least pretend and at bare minimum, don't let customers over hear you talking about them or responding with sighs in frustration. Absolutely terrible. So many hoops to jump through. I have to call literally every single day. My husband suffered a stroke, so I am filing a critical illness claim for the financial benefit to help bridge the gap while I take care of him and don't work as much. We are getting the runaround. The website is apparently the ultimate source of information because the phone numbers you are provided direct you to the website. The chat option also directs you to the website's information. I did FINALLY get through to someone after getting an alternate number from a chat session, and they did nothing but talk over me and tell me to look at the website. I needed to know what was left, and what documents were needed. Our doctor has sent in documentation, but apparently that is the wrong doctor or the wrong documentation? No one seems to know since the "To do list" shows the same letter we had previously. For a business that is supposed to be helping people who are going through major life changes or traumatic situations they are hopeless and heartless. read more

In late July 2025 i had a depression/anxiety breakdown at work - I'm a Case Manager at a Homeless Shelter in LA. I immediately had my doctor (psychiatrist) issue a request for me to be off 8/5 -- 8/30 and participate in a three week Group Outpatient Clinic where we learned how to manage stress / anxiety and depression and learn about medications that might assist - I started a pysch med. I immediately filed a claim (Aug 6) with this company and followed all the rules / tasks from day one. I went back to work on 9/2/25 and contacted this company three times between 8/6-9/2, and was told that all was done i.e. mandatory tasks like get paperwork from my health provider Kaiser and their respective staff. last week (9-5-25) I called to check status on my case - as I saw nothing had changed in my claim profile - and asked a rep when i could expect payment; was told items were still missing and my claim for over A MONTH had gone nowhere. I am late on my mortgage and this has caused stress on my mental wellness, - I'm 68 years and don't need more anxiety. I was sold by my HR department that this company would be there for me when needed i.e. short term disability. All that I have received is paperwork, worthless AI assistance, and incorrect information about my status. Their behavior has been in bad faith and obviously they do not want to honor the short term disability - and pay me what is owed to me - a disability plan that I and my company is paying to afford employees. $3600 is 90% of my pay. No choice but to file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. read more

Would not recommend but it's what work provided. 6 weeks prior to surgery and leading up to had numerous conversations with UNUM ensuring all of my "to do" tasks were completed. They were all completed but never sent communication or communicated to me that I had to apply through the state first as my state is one of 5 that will provide for a % and then UNUM picks up the remainder. Shame on TYLER my representative for not doing his job. These are lives that you entrust your employees to protect and provide a service. my company uses Unum for disability. A few weeks ago my caseworker became very nonresponsive. Originally she was very proactive. She reached out to my PCP in early August received a letter back, but I guess it wasn't enough. Instead of calling me or adding something to my page in the portal,it was left for seven business days while I fought to find out what was happening. I did let my caseworker at my employer leave of absence team know they suggested I go directly to Unum, which I did. In speaking to the caseworkers manager, she did see the 6 to 7 business day delay and had no response. She extended my a courtesy she ! Today I saw that I was charged an exuberant amount of taxes because she combined two weeks of backpay into one check instead of doing two submissions. I have always received a payment for six days instead she doubled it for 12 and I lost $740 take home! And now I have to fight that alone. read more

Unum is the worst insurance company to deal with. I had back surgery and have a spinal cord stimulator implant in my lower back. I have been on mixed decisions for about a month. I called their representatives and got the run around. They said I need more information to give them . My doctor filled out every form and sent over documents. They approved only 5 weeks on my short term disability . I still haven't got paid for any of the disability claim and it is almost a month. I get transferred to different people same run around. I paid a lot of money into this benefit and now I can't use it. I am thinking about dropping the short term disability and the long term disability insurance because it is no good to me if I can't use it. I am going back to Aflac because I know atheist I will be able to use it when needed. I think Unum is a ponzi scheme. read more

She finally called me back today, and when I expressed my disappointment with her failure to return my calls and asked to speak to her supervisor, she hung up on me. Dealing with this company has been a challenging experience, especially with their failure to return phone calls in a timely manner. UNUM is a scam. I told them they're a scam over the phone. UNUM replied by saying it's my company's fault that UNUM didn't do their job. Read more below. UNUM specialist claimed to have contacted my doctor for medical records and blamed the doctor for not replying. My doctor said UNUM never contacted them. UNUM representative said specialist had the wrong fax number the whole time. How?? Who's number did they previously have then?? UNUM will change the story and details of the process to purposely confuse customers or lie to change the situation to something more convenient for them. I've caught this and they apologized and said this new thing they're telling me is the correct detail. Every time I call, their story never stays the same. UNUM claimed they contacted me multiple times but could not tell me the dates. They just kept saying they have an activity record of everything to try to scare me but failed to tell me any dates of any activity. They control the activity log. They can fabricate/edit the activity log all they want, but my phone company and email company records aren't going to lie. UNUM specialist told me that whatever his/her decision is on benefits is final. So it's basically a monarchy where one person with no medical background can make all the decisions. The specialist said if they "feel" I'm not disabled enough based on what they read, then I'm not eligible for benefits. So their company is making a medical decision on someone's disability status based on the UNUM specialist's "feelings" (and the specialist doesn't have a medical degree). It's illegal to make a medical conclusion without a medical license. The UNUM specialist also said they don't want to give too much money out because the government will pay us disability benefits so there's no reason to give us much more on top of that. Yes, that's what was told to me. For 4 weeks, UNUM ignored all my voicemails for an update and waited until it was time to close the claim so they can pocket all my company's money and never have to give out benefits. I told UNUM over the phone they are a scam because they just wait until a claim is old enough to close it out so they don't have to pay benefits. UNUM replied and TOLD ME THIS IS ALL MY COMPANY'S FAULT BECAUSE MY COMPANY TOLD THEM TO DO EXACTLY THAT and they were just following instructions. When I said I don't believe my company told UNUM to attempt to contact my doctor once, give up after one attempt, and then ignore me for 4 weeks, UNUM had nothing to say. Looking online, there was a lawsuit against UNUM and UNUM lost. "Ex-Dickstein Shapiro Lawyer Wins Fees in Unum Disability Lawsuit" (Jan 2023) "A federal judge Tuesday granted class-action status to a lawsuit that contends Unum Group, the nation's largest disability insurer, schemed to deny or terminate claims of thousands of disabled Americans." (Can't find the date on that article) Several attorney/legal websites also state that they can help you fight against UNUM (not just any company, UNUM specifically). Looks like everyone here is a one star and would give less if they could. Same here, although for different reasons than claim issues and denials. I am a plan administrator and have for two days now been trying to update information for someone wanting to make changer to their beneficiary on his life insurance. If it is possible to do so on their website, it is impossible to locate. I actually don't believe it is after investing several hours trying, so that is a problem in and of itself. So, okay, I will have to get Unum's assistance. Try the chat bot first. Absolutely inane just circling back to useless info that is just screen shots of all the dead ends I explored on the site already, than it just terminates the chat saying you aren't providing the right information. Okay, I see an option for email, I will engage that and at least start dialogue with an actual person, NOPE, just another chat bot that also just terminates its interactions with you abruptly because it can't actually help you. There is no actual phone number on the website, so I googled and got a number for support. The call was answered by a real person whom was helpful in so far as telling me she was not the right person to help me, and provided me with a phone number. Called that number, went through a few multiple choice questions to direct me to the right person and connected me. The message there was no one is available and it hung up. So I'm many hours in and no closer to any resolution, nor any avenue to assist me. So in agreement with many others, one star is much more generous than Unum deserves. read more

This is the dental plan my work provides, it's free so that looks like a good deal on the surface. However, it is an obscure plan that almost no one has heard of, the dentists that you can find through their portal aren't actually in network. It won't let you navigate their website because it won't let you select the relevant information. If there is one positive I could say it is that their customer service does not put you on hold forever. read more

If I could rate this company at -1, I absolutely would. While the representatives and claims specialists are polite, UNUM will go to any length to delay or dodge payments. Luckily, I could lean on some savings while waiting for this awful company to do its job. But I feel for anyone who depends on this money, especially while managing a disabling injury or illness. It is a real financial strain if you need to transition from short-term to long-term coverage. They pay only once a month, so if your short-term ends at the beginning of the month, don't expect to see a dime until the month's end. Sure, just explain that to your bill collectors or ask your grocery store if they'll accept an IOU. Meanwhile, the CEO of UNUM is probably flying home on a private jet. Sadly, this company has zero interest in actually supporting people. I strongly urge companies to rethink choosing UNUM for their employee disability insurance. This is the worst company. They're unethical, rude, and heartless. My husband was shot on duty as a police officer. This is the company his employer had for short term disability. My husband has lifelong injuries, can no longer work as a police officer, and had to leave a career he loved. We fought them for years to see anything. Now, they're trying to come back and tell us that we owe it all back, plus taxes, after fighting them for two years to even see anything. So now we are stuck trying to figure out this mess with Unum, while still receiving nothing from the ex-employer. Do not trust this company or any of its employees. read more
