Starting off with a great par 5.

I truly believe that the University of New Mexico Championship golf course is one of THE best bargains in Albuquerque and possibly the State of New Mexico. Located literally next to the Alb. International airport, UNM Championship is a par 72, 7500+ yard course. I had the chance to play championship when I lived in Albuquerque and again with a good friend during a collegiate conference. Filled with rolling hills, challenging par 3's and some fairly tight lies, this course will play true to rating and test many golfers. I was able to track down a very good price on-line but I know that you can call the clubhouse for reservations and still get a great price. The driving range, club house, pro shop and practice green is second to none. In addition to great golf, I feel Albuquerque has GREAT culture, charm and the best green and red chile enchiladas anywhere. The city and its surrounding areas host great native pueblo entertainment and food. I know many people travel to New Mexico to see and visit Santa Fe but please take some time to explore the Sandia Tram, local restaurants, and great golf. I truly believe all guests will enjoy the city and please go play UMM Championship course. I promise you won't be disappointed.

I played on a Saturday mid August at noon. It was my first time and I walked up to check in and Eric set me up with range balls and directions. I hit a bucket of balls on the range and teed off on #1 right on time. The track was semi difficult and a lot of fun to play, it had some of the most scenic holes I have seen in a while. The twosome I played with were good golfers and showed me the ropes.I enjoyed my day so much I bought a Lobo polo. Excellent course and customer service

    Panoramic view of downtown Albuquerque.

Last year they had some…read morekind of problem with the irrigation system and lost a lot of grass (we had like zero precipitation last year, so it was not good). A year later and you would not know it. City guys did an outstanding job of getting this excellent course back in shape. Hat tip to the city workers at all of Albuquerque's muni courses. Some of the guys at Arroyo have been there many years and they care about that course. One practice green for chipping (with a bunker) and two for putting. Pretty good driving range, but in the winter don't expect a lot of good grass. You will have various "lies" on this course. More slope in the fairways than most courses in Albuquerque. A down hill putt away from the mountain? Be careful, that's going to be a fast putt! Normally they will have a beverage cart out every day. Tip them well! Cafe has better than average food for sure. Tip them well too! Everybody is friendly and many of the staff members are long time employees, which in my mind indicates a good work environment, which results in good friendly service. The City's Point-of-Sale system slows everything down during check-in, but that's true at all four muni courses. A pretty scenic course considering it's in the middle of the city. The Sandia mountains can present several different "looks" depending on cloud drape, crisp air, or even dusted in snow (yes, in Albuquerque you can play golf in a light jacket one day, and go skiing the next day). On a sunny day with really clear air, the Sandias look like they are 100 yards away - beautiful. Water buckets on number 1 and 10 would be a nice touch. Also seems they don't have the best sand in the bunkers. The sand they use has a lot of tiny rock chips, which will splash up on the greens. Last time out there were no flags on the practice green, so if you hole two or three balls, you've got to fish them out, rather than just pulling them out with the flag. Minor, but it's a nice touch and Arroyo is pretty much the only course that doesn't provide flags. All in all, an excellent value and a fun layout. Highly recommend.

Can I get a witness? Having that written, the location you're practicing said frustration that you hope evolves into fun has a lot to do with your overall experience. Can I get another witness? Amen! This is an absolutely beautiful course! It's set up very well and very challenging. However, what sets them apart from other higher end courses is the staff! Seriously, from the nice young girls who greet you upon arrival and set your bags on a cart for you, to the pros in the shop, all the nicest folk you'll most likely encounter in your day. I'd especially like to acknowledge golf pro Allen for being extra nice! He and other pros are the foundation upon future patronage of a particular golf course. And despite the fact that this is a high end course, there is no air of snobbery. There is no dismissive attitudes from any of the staff! Price wise? Sure, a bit more expensive than a muni, but obviously you get what you pay for, right? If you're a beginner like my daughter and I, or an old pro who has been whackin' balls for decades, you'll still be treated great here and hopefully love every minute of your day. Unless of course your frustrations get the better of you. Just remember, it's still just a game! And always remember the factual saying: a bad day on the golf course beats a good day at work every time! Cheers!

Marshall hovered and lacked tack. Golf cart was constantly dinging loudly with offers for food or other upsells. The experience: Played 18 holes on the Mesa/Lakes course. Seemed nice, good availability, cart and practice area were included, practice balls were higher than average quality practice greens matched course conditions on most of the holes. Played in a foursome, started on time but the group behind was waiting on the tee when we started. We let them pass us but suddenly we were 15 minutes behind according to the cart. We keep track of our play and we were well within the 12 min per hole average. At the turn we were given a choice to play on the Arroyo versus the Lakes course as they pro said it was less crowded. We enjoyed Arroyo but were baffled as to the reason Mesa/Lakes was overbooked with a pushy marshal instead of spreading out play on all three courses. The course has all the ingredients of a great resort course but is being managed like a racetrack.

And the kicker was, when I went to the range there were only about 6 balls on the entire range to hit. I am not talking about my stall, the entire range. Had to go to the shed to get my own balls. I just get the sense that this place is falling apart, customer service feels like they are just putting up with you but really don't want your business. I won't be coming back anytime soon, and I only live 7 minutes from it. I would rather drive to Albuquerque and play a muni.
