I don't recommend AARP New York Life for insurance at all. They send out "offers" to AARP…read moresubscribers, but then provide horrible customer service. First they want money from seniors up-front with the application, but then ghost you afterward. The agent I had, Nelson Costa, didn't call me back when he said he would on two occasions. The first non-response was when he said he would call me. The second non-response was when I called and tried to track down answers. Again, he said he would call me. Even now, I don't any place I can complain to except here on Yelp. The worst part was getting the long letter explaining why they won't insure me. I read it today and thought about this past year with Covid-19 Pandemic, community shut-downs, and the very recent loss of my mother. I looked again at what they said in their denial letter and I thought, what a horrible way they do business! I don't need anything they have to offer and I bet most people don't either. Rating - Pretty poor. Never doing business with this company.

I have had my retirement plan and personal assets managed by Whelan Financial since 2006…read more Previously, I was attempting to manage my investments by myself, but I believe that having this firm manage my assets was the best decision I've made. My financial planner in the firm is Vincent Whelan; however, on several occasions, I have also met with other certified financial planners including Portia White, Stephan Detweiler, and Taylor Whelan. For the last 15 years, I have elected to have quarterly in-person meetings with the financial planners and front office staff because everyone is pleasant, friendly, and personable. All advisors in the office are respectful, trustworthy, and highly skilled at what they do. The investment committee, which includes all of the financial planners, meet and decide the funds they want to include or exclude for their clients. The firm meticulously follows the rules and regulations of their clients' retirement plans. All these years, I have never felt uncomfortable at any time about any recommendations or decisions they make. I feel as if they manage clients' money as if it's their own. I've been very happy with my return on investments based on my personal risk tolerance. I also appreciate the transparency and thorough explanations with any changes made to the investments. Overall, I have been very impressed by the attention to details with every aspect of the money management these financial planners provide. My portfolio is fully diversified and my assets are managed with discipline. The focus also is not only on return on the investment based on the risk tolerance of the client, but also on managing the expenses of the clients. From time to time, at my request, they have also reviewed and made recommendations on the 401-k and HSA portfolio with my current employer free of charge. I have been so impressed by their vast knowledge and skill of asset management, along with their friendly, personable approach that I have recommended this firm to my family members and friends.

Portia clearly has a passion for her career and does a thorough job relating to me in terms I can understand. She is open to my bringing investment ideas to the table and walks me through all the risks and benefits, guiding me, and supporting me in the decision process. She is always incredibly friendly and professional and I greatly enjoy our interactions together. In addition, the attention to detail, convenient scheduling and exceptional customer service at the firm is unparalleled. I have never had to wait more than one business day for a reply to a question or a request for a last-minute wire transfer. My past experience with advisors had left me feeling rushed and at times bullied into investments that were not in my best interest. It is clear that Portia is always focused on what is best for my total financial health and has never offered me products or services that would merely benefit her bottom line. Working with someone with such integrity has left me with an optimistic outlook for my retirement planning and current finances.

We then found out we had our Credit Bureau pulling capability pulled. CBC fixed it the next morning and got up and running very quickly. Off course we expected them to hit us with a bill for all the prior credit pulls. Well they didn't, the recognized the error on their side of not accounting for what was being run and waived the prior charges for all credit pulls. They have won me over with their common sense customer centric approach to solving this issue. Not to mention the fact that we feel they are really reasonable with their charges in the first place.
