My wife, nine-year-old daughter, and I walked in on a Friday in September to renew our daughter's passport. Even though they have walk in hours at 9am on Fridays, we made an appointment for 10am online. Right away, Cherry helped us. She was very patient and kind. She took our daughter's photo, copied a few documents, and walked us through the completed application. We were on our way within 15-20 minutes. This USPS is inside the National Postal Museum in the building that's the first federal building named after a woman. It's spacious with all the things you'd expect- stamps for sale, greeting cards, etc. It's right next to the Union Station Metro.

I finally called the customer service line because my mailman said they could put a trace on the package. The hardest part was due to my eyes. I had to enter the tracking number. I did get a wonderful employee named Dora. My package is being returned to me. She doesn't know why but the return process started (coincidentally) July 2nd. She signed me up for text messages so I can get texts regarding my return. It will be very convenient. She also offered to connect me so I could order more stamps when I said I need more. I rather go to the website and select what I like. I find that is a very convenient service too. I guess I'm just glad my mission for today is accomplished! I'm still a fan of USPS since childhood.

I filled out the proper form and submitted to have my mail on hold and not to be delivered until I returned to pick it up. I did this at two USPS stations which serve my neighborhood. Thought I was fully covered doing that. Of course, when I got home my mail box was full and some items were left on a table in our building lobby. WTF??? When I went to the post office they had no answer other than to say my normal carrier was also out for a week. The replacement did not pay attention to my hold forms. Such a BS reason. USPS increased the postage rate four times between 2021 and 2023. It makes me happy that I rarely mail anything. I do mail Christmas and birthday cards, and stocked up on forever stamps prior to the last couple of postage rate increases. Of all the things we are taught about Benjamin Franklin, I did not know he was appointed the first postmaster general! I also did not realize the USPS employs over 640,000 people! The USPS has a fun facts link and there I learned that coconuts and potatoes can be mailed without a box. Just write the destination and return addressees on your piece of produce and have it weighed for appropriate postage. USPS will ship it as-is. I had no idea! I love nearly all of the USPS postage stamp designs! Cool recent stamp designs include a group of Route 66 themed stamps (celebrating the 100th anniversary of America's legendary highway), and Mohammed Ali stamps. And, I enjoy gifting international postcard stamps at Christmas time to my friends who are involved in Postcrossing which is an international postcard exchange program. The process for ordering USPS postage stamps online is always easy and I appreciate that option versus having to buy stamps at a local post office.

I wanted to order more stamps online. I have been having trouble with delivery. They shoved an oversized package into my mailbox instead of giving it to the package room. It was not easy to pull out. One day I had an Amazon delivery missing in action. It went to the wrong address I guess. It was a birthday gift for my daughter a tiny item. I paid $20 with tax and shipping. This item wasn't sold using Prime or Amazon delivery. My local post office did email me to apologize for losing it after I requested a missing package search. So today USPS gets three stars. The flip side is that the friendly & want to assist postal workers behind the counter makes the wait worthwhile. There was a three person staff today with one person floating around who had no quarrels answering questions while people waited in line. The interior was pretty much in order, supplies fully in stocked everywhere with the historic accents through out. I was able to ask a question while waiting in line, to see if there was a need to purchase tracking for a self postage package I put together. I was told no yet the packaged needed to be scanned to track. I got to the counter, smiles for everyone, got my package scanned & was good to go. A positive outcome as we know the visit to the PO are not always a happy go luck excursion. I'm glad I strolled down Penn Ave to one of the national historic sites in the Federal Triangle area to get my postal needs taking care & with good customer service.

I was particularly prepared for a fight when I started shipping most of my worldly belongings home. Fortunately the lone postal worker who staffs this location is a nice, if no-nonsense, woman who just wants to get her job done and get you and your package out the door. When I showed up with three heavy-ish boxes of books she allowed my boyfriend to carry the boxes in the back for her and didn't ask questions about their media mail status. She did turn me away when I tried to ship 12 boxes from her post office but I don't blame her - she ended up not having enough carts or space for them and she gave us directions for the nearest post office who could take all 12 boxes. So the bulletproof glass is a little off-putting but I'd happily continue to do my shipping at this post office.

But not all locations nor all employees would fall in that category. I have been to this location of USPS a few times now and on all these occasions my experience has been very middle of the road. I wont say the service was top notch with a feeling of being taken care of; nor was it bad where I came away with negative feelings regarding that location.Maybe, that is a "win" for USPS :) I had stopped by to mail a letter bound for an international destination. The person helping me advised on all the various charges depending on the delivery time frame - from overnight to 10+ business days. She also gave me all the paperwork that I had to fill out in order for me to mail the letter over. She even let me cut back in line once I was ready. Overall, a decent experience at this USPS!

I like to support USPS over private companies, however they are not making it an enjoyable experience to use them. From a service prospective, 2 weeks before Christmas they only have 1 person working. She unfortunately can only do what she can. However, she clearly isn't even trained well enough to know where supplies are, as the label machine ran out of paper and she had to call someone to let her know where more was. Lastly, if they can't afford to pay more employees they should install a stamp machine here so you don't have to wait in line to buy stamps.
