Just came in for a second trim 11 months after my last trim with Starr... not because my hair looked bad, but because it was starting to get tangled and needed the split ends taken care of. My mom actually just commented on how good my hair was looking a couple weeks ago! I can't believe how well the cut had grown out. Both this time and the last, my only instruction was to shape it nicely without taking off to much length, and Starr magically trimmed my curls to perfection! read more

Looking for a curly hair stylist, I connected with this place. I loved the website, friendly owner outreach. Expensive services $300 for cut and style but hey, reviews are good. At the owner's request I sent photos of styles I liked only to find out that she doesn't and I quote: "I don't do short cuts." Hmm. Is short- shoulder length? Is it ear length? Are the services really more about trimming an inch or two? But below the collar bone? I'm glad she asked for pictures so we didn't waste each other's time. read more

Starr knows exactly what she's doing when it comes to curly hair. I have now seen her twice this year and my curls are so healthy and happy. I owe so much of that to Starr. She takes the time to educate you on your current needs: from styling, to product, to technique... you leave better equipped to love your curls. Her studio space is a VIBE. It's beautiful, cozy, and intimate; a rare space for self-care and acceptance we all so desperately need. I cannot imagine trusting anyone else. Finding her was crazy-cool. read more

If you have naturally curly hair, you must see Starr! I have been battling my curly hair for years, straightening it, blow drying it and not appreciating the curls I had. Starr did a dry cut on my hair/curls and her attention to detail for every single curl was amazing. She taught me how to treat my curls, how to wash, dry, sleep. It was such an educational experience and as you'll see from the before/after - my hair is SO happy now! The salon is gorgeous - so quirky and fun and Starr is wonderful - so welcoming, friendly, and a joy to be around. I highly recommend Starr and am so happy I found her! read more

My little boy has never had a haircut because of my hesitation with stylists not being familiar with curly hair. I was so glad when my SIL shared what Starr had done for curlies at local high schools. I knew right then this was THE stylist for my little man's first haircut! I reached out to her and worked to set up an appointment. Today was the big day! My son was nervous. I'll admit, I was too. But Starr was fantastic and put us both at ease. She was patient, gentle and kind with my son and listened to what I wanted for him. As a parent and fellow curly, I appreciated that so much. Thank you Starr read more

Starr is fabulous and so is her calming and eclectic salon. I have been searching for years for a curly hair specialist with a few disastrous cuts. After seeing her Instagram, my sister and daughter led me to her. Starr takes her time to get to know you and your hair. She is kind, sincere, non-judgmental, attentive, beautiful, stylish, and very understanding about us Curly Girls. She treats your hair gently and with extreme care. She taught me so much about how to care for my hair on my own without pushing any pricey products. She also suggested products that were easily accessible and affordable outside of her salon. If you want to look and feel your best, look no further, Starr and her salon, Unique Hair Studion is the only choice! read more

I have driven past Unique Hair Studio for years. Every time I went past, I thought, "I need to call," because there was a sign that said something like "curly hair welcome." In 2019, well before the pandemic started, I began embracing my gray hair. Then, I gradually started embracing my curly hair. I've spent thousands of dollars and years straightening and coloring my hair. After spending time on YouTube trying to figure out how to manage and style my curls, I reached out and scheduled a consult with Starr. At that first meeting, Starr spent 30 minutes with me, patiently listening to what I wanted and telling me how to care for my curly hair until I could come back in. When I could finally go in for a curly cut, Starr took her time with me and my hair. She gently coaxed my curls to cooperate as she trimmed here and there. Regarding products and styling, Starr explained everything she was doing and using on my hair (from shampoo to protecting spray). She walked me through the entire process, so I could get the best results at home. I took pictures of all the products she used on my hair. But when I got home, I had forgotten what order she used the products in, and how she was using them on me. I texted her and asked for guidance. Starr was so accommodating and texted me right back explaining all the steps in the hydrating/styling process. A bonus is that Starr is a pretty awesome human being. The vibe in her salon is lovely. I felt comfortable, welcome, and seen from the first moment I met her. I cannot recommend Starr highly enough--especially if you have curly hair that likes to be frizzy and haywire. I will most definitely be going back! read more

My teenage son and I had the most amazing experience at the Unique Hair Studio. We had no idea how to manage his curly hair and Starr provided a full consultation- educated us on how to manage the hair, detailed a treatment plan/routine, cut, washed, dry and cut again. It was worth every penny. My only wish is that she would consider styling my boring straight hair. The studio was also clean and welcoming. read more

My daughter found this place online bc she has very curly hair and I was so excited to treat her for birthday but unfortunately it never came to fruition. I reached out to this salon via Yelp and the conversation carried over into text .. trying to narrow down a time and date that would work for us and the salon. The person I was texting with said they will follow up with me the next day and that she needed to see which colorist was available. Well, a week and 1/2 later no reply, no call, nothing. Needless to say, I was disappointed in the lack of response, so I found another location a bit farther away in Thousand Oaks who contacted me right away and got us in. read more

I visited Starr at her salon for the first time this weekend. It was my first curly cut since going natural early 2020. She was AMAZING!! My curls are so soft and light. Besides the cut, I got a shampoo, deep condition and style. The next day my hair fell right into place. The shape is perfect. I never knew my hair could look or feel this nice! Her lovely personality was an added bonus. Such a caring individual. The salon was very welcoming as well. I highly recommend Starr to anyone looking for special treatment for their curls. read more

I moved to the Camarillo area about a year ago and was nervous about finding a new stylist, but Starr made me feel comfortable the moment I met her! She was patient, listened to what I had to say, and even answered all my haircare questions as she did the cut. She's an excellent stylist and conversationalist too. Starr knows her curls. As a curly haired woman who wears her curls instead of straightening them out, I had never in my life had a hairdresser who truly understood how to cut curls. In fact, I had never had a "Diva cut" before going to Starr. For those of you who don't know, a Diva Cut involves cutting your curly hair while it is dry so that the hairdresser can really see how the curls will fall. When I found Starr a year ago at a cool salon in downtown Ventura, I felt as though I'd met my hair's soulmate. Now, she has opened up her own cool, hip salon in downtown Camarillo. Not only does she listen to what you'd like done to your hair, but she is a sweet, caring person. Check out her salon ... you'll love her too! read more
