You are paying 70 dollars a night for a hotel in SF. The room was fine. The bathrooms were shared but super clean. Room was hot on the third floor but asked for a fan and they brought one right up. Staff was nice. For 70 bucks a night, it was great. Bed was comfy. Shower was hot and had excellent water pressure. Would stay here again. X read more

Do NOT stay here. It's the worst "hotel" I've ever been to! The pictures are very deceiving! It's filled with dirty bed sheets, homeless people, smelly halls and rooms, dirty room, MICES running around, extremely cold in the night, and staff that doesn't believe you when you tell them that the mouse is coming into to room because of the space between the door and ground. Terrible! Run before you're disgusted and disappointed. It's better to sleep in your car than to come here! read more

Union Hotel - The worst hotel in San Francisco - Hotels Near Me - San Francisco, California

If you're ever in SF the mission area is the best! Union hotel is especially It's got security close by because of the dance club next door and it's gated. Check out San Francisco ya'll. My Grandmother was right. It's nice! #travel PS: the "Sandwich Place" across the street has the best fucking sandwiches. Tell him Amos sent you and I bet he'll laugh :) Good people for real! #NextTimeSF #Inspiration #casper read more

This hotel was at a great price and in a great location for our trip. WARNING: The rooms do not come with restrooms, so you will have to share restrooms and showers, but they are private and lock. We wish we knew that before, but it did not bother us, as it was clean and private. Plus at least there was a sink in our room. You shouldn't spend much time in your hotel when visiting, so I think this is a great option. There is always some one at the desk if you have any issues as well. Horrible, absolute stench in the second floor. I was also stripped of my freedom at this hotel because I was a smoker and they only wanted me to smoke once every 2 hours while holding me captive for those 2 hours. Don't go here, spend extra $20 on a hotel that has better management than this stinky odor hotel that controls what you do. read more

None of the outlets in our room worked :( which was a shame because we were traveling and would've loved to have charged our phones during the night..... we asked if they could do anything about it and they said no. We even asked for a compensation and they said no. There was only one shower per floor but many toilet stalls available. Location is great because it's right by the BART and local eateries. read more

Conveniently located. Clean. Friendly service. We enjoyed our stay here. The neighborhood did have a homeless population, but we never felt unsafe. read more

Great budget stay! The hotel was clean and the staff was friendly. They even let me store my bag for the day since my train wouldn't be leaving until later! The area does feel a little bit sketchy as a solo female traveler but it is right next to public transportation and there is a secure gate at the front of the hotel that you need to be buzzed in for. It is more of a hostel situation than a hotel. The bathrooms and showers are shared by floor and the rooms are small with just a bed, sink, dresser and little tv. read more

I stayed here just before the last reviewer BL. I tried to review my stay but I couldn't find Union Hotel on Yelp and didn't know how to create the page. And I must say, I've stayed in 6 different SROs now since I've been in San Francisco, and like it or not, the Union Hotel is the second best place I've stayed. I stayed for a few weeks. Check in was painless, Steve and his son Jay were VERY helpful and very kind during my stay. I called first to confirm availability, called several times actually, the phone was answered quickly and they were helpful at all times. Steve even asked me for my name which is a pretty unheard of courtesy in the SRO world. Yes, this hotel is in the Mission. If you are a little girl or a man who thinks he is made of glass, the neighborhood will freak you out after midnight. It is full of transients, drug dealers, you get the point. Literally right outside the front gate, and all over the neighborhood. I call it "character", or "being in the 'mix'". If you are a puss-puss, maybe you should check into a hotel in Des Moines or Boise. $215 a week tax included, unlike every other SRO I've looked into which advertises a price then adds on taxes and fees. So the flat rate was nice. And $215, all things considered in my eyes, is as fair of a price as you might find in this crazy city by the bay. They did clean the room weekly while I was there. I went and did my laundry while they did their cleaning every week. I don't know why BL claims there isn't a cleaning service. Compared to other SROs I've stayed in or checked out, this has been the cleanest thus far, still very dirty, but passable. There is a strict visitor policy but I'm not a prostitute, drug dealer, or Mission socialite, so I see no reason to care about this policy, for myself personally. It is a tiny bit safer than other places for this reason. WiFi is offered for free. They had a working TV in my room, with HBO, ESPN, History, and Discovery, so I was a happier camper for that minor luxury. The bathrooms and showers are cleaned DAILY. And cleaned well, as far as I can tell. Unlike other SROs I have stayed at which literally have feces on the wall in the stalls and mold on the wall in the showers. I can deal with whatever. I'm just saying, in my perspective, the Union Hotel has been taking care of business better than the competition I've stayed at. At all other hotels I've had to provide my own towel and toilet paper. At the Union Hotel they provide t.p. in the bathrooms and a clean towel every week. Unlike BL I had no pest problems. I'm a little sad to hear he did. I checked thoroughly for signs of bugs or other pests before I checked in and felt satisfied with a lack of evidence that there was any real "problem". I did not see rodents or insects of any kind. And my room was definitely free of any crawling problems during my stay. It is a dirty neighborhood, and a dirty city, so anything is possible. This was just my experience. My room did not have a closet, so there is that. I think the biggest negative may be that my room was carpeted, which in a world of crawly things and germs, a carpet is a terrifying thing. It seems like no matter where you stay in San Francisco from the nicest place on down to the worst place, it's a matter of timing and individual circumstance. Unlike in other cities where a nice hotel is a nice hotel and a crap hotel is a crap hotel, in this city it seems like it's all pretty much up in the air. I imagine best practice is to avoid ALL SROs in San Francisco. They are probably all basically dirty infested places. I gave this hotel 2 stars but in hindsight I really didn't mind my stay at the Union. I think 4 stars is more appropriate considering all circumstances. read more

This hotel is located on a fairly sketchy street in the Mission area. I stayed for a week while I was looking for another place and almost asked for my money back. The managers are very nice, but the hotel is old, dingy and smells like garbage. You have to get buzzed in to the front door, so be careful at night as it can take a minute for someone to buzz you in. When I first got there, a homeless guy tried to "help me" with my things, but thankfully told him no because he probably would've run off with my stuff. The sheets/towels they give you may be clean, but they do not LOOK clean. I saw a mouse go under the door of someone's room one night when I came back late and for each day that I was here I have seen one or multiple roaches (small to medium sized ones, but a roach no less). A mouse came into my room late at night as well. The bathrooms/halls are cleaned regularly, but they do clean at 10 AM (which is the check out time as well) so don't expect to sleep in. They do not clean the rooms while you are staying there, so if you're here for a few months, good luck. The shower water pressure is good and the water does get hot, so that's a plus, but there is only ONE working shower between the 2nd and 3rd floors. Cash only, non-negotiable $215 a week or $40 a night. You have to empty your own trash and the trash can is an old, moldy paint bucket that I don't even want to know what is at the bottom of it. They will give you new sheets if you pull your old ones off and switch them out on Wednesdays (I think, double check to be sure), but you have to then make your own bed. You must not mind the smell of Indian cooking or incense. It can get cold at night. I kept finding other people's hairs in various places of the room. Everything in the room is old and run down. I may have gotten bug bites overnight, although I can't prove it. Visitors are only for 15 minutes. My recommendation: bring shower slippers, be savvy while on the street walking in/out, shower earlier than 10 AM, bring your own towel/blanket (at least, that's what I did). read more

I recently moved to SF and had my heart set on living in the Mission, and I didn't have a lot of time to find a place. After checking out a few overprices room-shares, I was lucky enough to come across the Union Hotel. The location is as good as it gets, located right in the heart of the Mission. It's literally a stones throw away from the BART, along with just about everything else you could want (bars, restaurants, nightlife, etc.). It may not look like much from the outside, but don't be fooled. The rooms are clean and the staff is incredibly friendly and courteous. Jay and Steve, the father and son that run the place, are great and make me feel welcome every time I walk in the door, which in my book, means a whole lot and it says a lot about them. The reason I believe the five stars I rated the UH is well deserved is because the Value, dollar-for-dollar, is probably unmatched by any SRO in the Mission (or the city for that matter). They provide Free WiFi, Free Cable TV (including HBO) with no additional expense for utilities. So, if you are looking for a short or medium-term place to stay, I definitely recommend checking out the Union Hotel. I've only been here a few weeks, but I already think I will end up staying a lot longer than I had originally planned. It sure is worth it! read more

Union Hotel was a nice safe haven for me. They clean the place every day, which is good and bad, the good is it's very clean, the bad is if you want to sleep in, you will hear the vacuum going around 9 or 10 in the morning, not a biggy for me. It's very secure, and you won't have riff raff coming in and out. The tenants I ran into were very kind or quiet. The area has a good amount of restaurants, as well as the interesting characters at 16th street Bart. They never gave me any problems though. There is no fridge, which is kind of a bummer, however there is a community microwave that is kept clean, they sell ice and sodas if you ask the front desk. Jay is very friendly and made me feel comfortable and like family. Weekly cleaning includes change of sheets, towels, and a scrub down of your room, it smells really nice when they are done. I recommend this place for anyone moving into the city and looking for a safe haven while looking for an apartment or saving up for those really high rental deposits. Survival Tips: Get an electric tea kettle, and purchase foods that just need hot water added to them. This will save money instead of eating out every night. Invest in shower shoes, a shower bag to hold your goodies, and purchase your own shampoo and conditioner (none is provided), soap is provided though. I purchased a small fan to keep air circulating, even with the window open, not much air flow where my room was located. I recommend Carlin's Cafe for Laundry, it's a nice place to relax while washing clothes. I also purchased disinfectant wipes, I used them whenever I needed to use the restroom, since there are no toilet seat covers. The seats look clean, however I still want to be safe from microbes. read more

I arrived in the city years ago with a back pack and a duffel bag, with a new job, and no place to stay. I heard about SROs downtown and I was unworried. I checked two of them out after work and decided they weren't for me, so I couch surfed for a month in the Mission until I found a place. I fell in love with the Mission ever since. Back to apartment hunting, I needed a place to stay. I came across Union Hotel on yelp, ignored the reviews and checked it out myself. Upon arriving, it wasn't what I was hoping for but I figured I could deal with it. Months later, I am still here, happy with my decision and I couldn't have asked for a better situation. The hotel is family owned/managed which I doubt is often the case for SROs. They are gracious, and always there if you need something. The hallways, bathrooms, and showers are cleaned daily around 10am. My room is cleaned weekly: new sheets, bedding, pillows, towels, desk, and vanity. It always smells fresh afterwards. There is free wifi and a TV with basic cable as well. The building itself is secure, as you are buzzed in the ground level floor, which has video so not just anyone is coming in. The weekly rent is absolutely affordable and cash only which isn't bad for a bartender. Having spoken of my love for the Mission, there is 16th and Mission. To most it is going to be sketchy or "dangerous" but it is really not that bad. It's just one of those crossroads of the city that you can get anywhere, so there is ALOT of people. There is BART and tons of busses. A block away you have Valencia which is full of awesome restaurants, bars, bookstores, thrift stores, etc. you name it. Believe it or not, I have found some love and appreciation for 16th and Mission. With all that said, is this hotel perfect? Of course not. The furnishing isn't top of the line Ikea. The TV isn't a flat screen. I'm sure the bedding isn't 800 count Egyptian cotton. And the TP isn't gold leafs. I'm content and happy to have found this place while looking for an apartment, and recommend it to anyone in the middle of homes. read more

This place was great. Stayed here for a couple nights. But beware, this place is a hostel. You get your own room and share bathrooms with other rooms. Everything was always really clean and the staff is super attentive. A toilet was clogged in our floor, we informed them and within minutes it was taken care of and cleaned up. This hostel is located in a less than desirable area. Lots of sketchy characters roam the area. Parking can also be a bit of a hassle if the structure behind the building gets full. Overall, this place is great for the price. It's immediate location is a bit sketchy, but it's also super close to the Bart and only a few blocks from other awesome neighborhoods and delicious restaurants. read more

First off its a hostel, so each floor shares 2 bathrooms (toilets) and 1 shower between I believe 12 rooms. This is the first time I've stayed in this type of environment and it was definitely different! Each room has its own little sink, 19" tube TV and a small bed. It's probably because I've been sheltered my whole life, but I didn't really trust the pillow or going under the blankets, so luckily a brought a pillow on my road trip and a blanket which I both put on top of the sheets that were on the bed. The hotel staff were amazing and they really are trying to keep the place up which is why I gave it 4 stars. If your a clean freak who would need to take a shower I would not say a hostel would be for you. read more

The negative reviews are from people who expected $100/night to go farther in San Francisco. That's not gonna happen. For the price, it's absolutely worth it. The room was clean, tidy, and had everything we expected. It located in a really cool neighborhood and we were able to walk just about everywhere. The people who operated the hotel were incredibly kind and friendly. They held our bags when we got there early and then they remembered exactly who we were when we came back. There's two bathrooms per floor, but they were never both full. We had to walk up three flights of stairs, but that's normal in SF. There were homeless people outside of the hotel, but they never talked to us or scared us. Union Hotel certainly isn't luxurious, but it's a great cheap choice. read more

This place is really good for what it is. Relative to other residential hotels around it is kept quite clean. I have not seen any pests here, but I did get bit by a mosquito once after sleeping with the window left open. The plumbing, lighting, heating, and other services all work. There is toilet paper in the bathrooms and soap by the sinks. There is cable television with some premium channels and multiple WiFi connections. Rooms have a nicely made bed, a sink with hot and cold running water and a mirror, a dresser, chair, coat hangars, table, television, and a window that opens and closes. The windows in most rooms face interior courts so there is little noise from the street despite the high levels of activity in the neighborhood. Every floor has two working toilets and a shower with plenty of hot water. The staff are quite nice and will buzz guests in any time of the day or night. They really take running this place seriously and it shows. There are some things that are mixed or outright problematic. The neighborhood is a transit hub with lots of shops around, but it is extremely busy and in addition to freakish homeless there is occasionally gang activity in the area. The entrance stairs have stinky carpet and sometimes street or cooking smells or cigarette smoke fill the air in the halls. Some of the guests are not the most refined people in San Francisco. read more

You really can't beat these prices in San Francisco. It's not luxurious by any means, but it's a great temp place to stay. It's safe, convenient since it's on a BART station, and the manager is accommodating with things like holding onto your suitcases during move-out, flexible move-in time, etc. if you come back late, you may have to press the doorbell many times to be let in, but eventually someone will answer. Noise travels well through walls, so be a sound sleeper or bring some earplugs. Overall, great deal for your money though. read more

This place is very horrible. Lot of homeless around, MUST avoid booking here, i reserved no refund, arrived could find parking and when i find it they said i can't check in. End up sleeping in the car. THIS PLACE IS A SCAM read more

Given the really expensive rooms in San Francisco, the rate of $270 per week is a pretty good deal. The rooms are clean and although the building is old, the management keeps a real clean building. Also, the management is really helpful too. I still would suggest that you keep your valuables with you. read more

Union Hotel - Newer dresser, the tv has cable. - Hotels Near Me - San Francisco, California

Do not be fooled by the other reviews like I was. This place is not a hotel, it is a halfway house located in a super seedy area next to what looked like a line of 30 people waiting to get into a meth clinic. It smelled like dead rats and mold and after I asked to see the room and politely declined the reservation. When I asked how much it would be to cancel, they told me the full amount of $200 even after I protested based on the conditions. For the same price, we ended up staying at a lovely Holiday Inn www.holidayinn.com/SanFrancisco about a mile away, where we explained our plight and they put us up in the pent house for the evening as a courtesy. I rarely write bad reviews, but do not stay here. read more

We visited SF on short notice. Union Hotel seemed like the best option considering the area we were at. My husband and I stayed in one of the full-size bed rooms. The room is very tiny, so I would say not good for a big family. 3 people max is was I would wager. It had a sink, a dresser, and a tv, and a window. Just going to put it out there, the walls are EXTREMELY thin. You will hear everything from coughing to average talking. The wifi is free and fast. Also note that it's dorm-style bathrooms. So each floor has to share 2 separate toilets and one shower room. It wasn't a problem for us, though. All in all, the rooms are clean and the service is very nice. You'll leave feeling moderately satisfied. read more

Certainly not a 5 star hotel, but 5 stars for what you pay for and what you expect! My house burned down and I needed a crash pad while I looked for a new place. I was worried that the Union would be dirty and full of shady people. It was neither! The place is really basic, but it is clean, and free of nefarious people. You have to share the toilets and showers, but honestly, in my two weeks there, I never had to wait for either! I got pretty comfortable at the Union. I would definitely go back to the Union and I recommend it to anyone on a budget. read more

I found a job here in San Francisco and needed a place to stay while I look for a apartment. I tried several SRO hotels and was not comfortable until I landed here. The neighborhood is in the heart of the Mission and is next to BART with many good restaurants. The Union Hotel does not have the amenities of a Hilton or Holiday Inn, the furniture is simple, clean bathroom and shower down the hall with no drama so its quiet at night. This is a good family run hotel and they take pride in keeping it clean, quiet and safe. I've been here 3+ months and think this is a great value. read more

Where else can you afford to live when your starting off in San Francisco?!, currently top most expensive cities in the US.. I was always treated well. They listened to my needs. They keep the place cleaned daily!!! Let's be realistic, its a hostel. The microwave is downstairs, the showers require flip flops/shower shoes. But 16th and Mission is a hot bed of MESS!!! BUT Jay, the manager, and his family don't take crap or let just any one in the hotel. So I felt fairly safe. I saved as best I could and got on my feet in a few months. read more

Clean, clean and clean. Let me start off by saying I'm a Chef. OCD, a neat freak and I absolutely hate cockroaches. I moved to the city on a whim for employment and I found myself at the Union Hotel. Having little time to actually go out and search for a place to live, I was more then content with my living arrangements. For the price and for the comfort of this place, it is outstanding. Management is great, friendly and they clean every day. Which brings me back to expressing the cleanliness of the hotel, I couldn't ask for more. If you're only trying to stay for a weekend or for awhile it's a great option. Not only are you in the heart of the city with some if the best food in the city but you're in a fun hip neighborhood. Don't let the "rift raft" scare you, they stick to themselves and do not bother you more then, "may I have a dollar or five." So if you need. Beware of this hotel, nothing but problems for us! My two daughters and I are in SF since my grandson is at the children's hospital. We booked the room through a third party service, I didn't read the description well in my haste to find a place where my daughter might get a few hours of sleep. I sent both girls, one to drive the mom of my grandson since she'd been awake for a couple days. They were told they both couldn't stay in the room, there were no upgrades to a double bed available and no room for a roll away bed. Upon checking in and seeing the room, my daughter was needed back at the hospital to give permission for an unexpected but necessary procedure. The girls left and we ended up cancelling the reservation shortly after, nothing in the room had been disturbed. While walking back to the car they had to endure harassing and offensive remarks from homeless people and others actively using drugs and engaging in sexual activity. This was NOT a safe area for my two daughters to be in. I understand that this was a non-refundable reservation, was just hoping there might be some grace given in the situation. read more

I have stayed in several SRO hotels and the Union Hotel is definitely in the higher level of more desirable hotels for an extended stay. The Mission District is a funky neighborhood with tons of shopping, eating, bars, transportation, etc. so it is good as a location to stay if you are looking for more permanent housing or just visiting for a couple of weeks. The owners keep all the hallways, bathrooms, showers and rooms very clean every single day. The rooms are your basic SRO single room. Bed, table, dresser, sink, etc.. Cable TV is really good because they actually have all the good channels! It is very quiet and not the type of place to party. WIFI internet actually works really well so no problems. They do have a guest policy so you can still have somebody visit. Steve and Jay are definitely awesome owner/managers who live there and definitely are around during the day and run a clean operation. I actually moved out for a couple of weeks and said I would be returning and they actually held my mail for me which is extremely rare for hotel managers to do. They definitely make you feel at home and comfortable as well as try to accommodate your wishes. I would definitely recommend this place for anybody looking for a clean and safe environment for a couple of weeks if you need to stay in a SRO hotel. read more

Beware of this hotel, my girlfriend and I accidentally booked a single room instead of a double room through hostelworld.com and the hotel let us know that when we arrived. Since there was no way we were going to stay in a twin bed, we wanted to upgrade to a double room. We were charged an extra $15 for that "upgrade" but after we were charged Jay, the manager, said that the $15 was just for allowing another person to stay in our single room, not for a different room. They were out of double rooms entirely. If we had known this, we would have cancelled the reservation and gone somewhere else with a bigger bed. Even moments after he had just ran our card, he refused to give us a refund. So we paid for three days in a single twin bed at this hotel and had an extremely uncomfortable night the first night, and then booked somewhere else for the other nights because the bed was just too small for two people. The decent thing to do would have been to cancel our charge because we never wanted to stay in a twin in the first place, but Jay took advantage of us and charged us for the twin anyway. We talked to multiple employees at the hotel and none of them were able to help us. Really disrespectful and I would have thought they would have the human decency to refund us after we clearly did not want that room and they knew that. Stay away from this hotel. read more

Ive been here over a year trying to start a life in SF and to find a kinder and more understandable family that run a hotel in one of the tenser areas in the mission is beyond a blessing. Steve and his son Jay run a true family operation day in and day out. Every week my room is cleaned with fresh sheets and a new towel. Each time i pass by their door you can see right into their life: large family gatherings, the delicious smells floating out of the kitchen, laughter and smiles each time you see them, and solitary moments where a wave 'hello' speaks enough for all. At night Michael sits in the hall listing out for problems and dealing with the long hours of the night. Conversely they wont take BS from anyone that feels they can just walk in however they please. Running a hotel in this area brings in the area and no matter how crazy the mission is my room here is safe and sound. we booked a room. 2 people. 1 room. because of their policy, they turned me away at 3am. it was raining and i had no where to go. 1 person. 1 room. while i slept in a coin laundry mat down the street. this policy is in place because this neighborhood's nightlife has a bad reputation. read more

Very clean and quite hotel in the middle of vibrant Mission District. Easy transportation hub for the full Bay Area experince.

this is a family owned and operated hotel. there are about 40 something rooms, all of which are usually filled as far as I can see with week to week or monthly tenants. from what I've seen, it's full of people who work everyday. The people are friendly. The shared bathrooms and showers have been clean everyday and I've been here going on two months. The rooms are cleaned every week without a problem. the family is pretty flexible and accommodating if you need to make some type of reasonable arrangements. the main contact, Jay, has proven to be very knowledgeable about the area and helpful in random areas of interest (ex. Computer hardware). The thing I like most about the rooms and the hotel in general is that I don't have to waste time cleaning the bathroom. I'm a neat freak so I use a lot of my Sundays normally cleaning up. At this hotel, I do none of that. They handle it faithfully, everyday. sometimes it seems like twice a day. the area is smack in the middle of the mission district. I'm from Sacramento and I was generally in love with the tourist parts of sf before I moved here. Since I arrived here, I haven't seen the ocean or the embacadero. The mission is the real San Francisco and I never really want to leave it. The hotel basically sits right at the corner of the 16th & mission Bart station so you have zero need for a car if u don't have one. The muni (the transit in sf) is also right there. I ride on the weekends throughout the whole bay with no problems. If you recall, I say there's no kitchen. However, I've never ate better in my life lol. right below the hotel is a taqueria, a coffee and donut shop, a convenience store with a fruit stand. They are all super affordable and good. If u want to spend zero dollars on food, there is virtually some group giving away home cooked meals at the Bart station everyday. Good food too. But back to these restaurants... There's multiple restaurants and fruit and vegetable stands across the street. There's a walgreens across the street. There's the greatest el salvadorian restaurant in the world around the corner. There's Indian, Japanese, Thai, Mexican, Mediterranean, Chinese, pizza, Pakistani, American, and Italian ALL ON THE BLOCK IM LOOKING AT. There's a cool breakfast spot, a bagel spot, 2 movie theaters that show indie movies, hellllllla bars that play live music, and cheap yoga places. There's hills with views, parks with constant soccer and basketball games. There's soooo much diversity that no one can feel out of place. There's every major bank across the street r around the corner. There's a barber across the street. There's a nail place down the street. There's 2 footlockers and a sheik in case you scuff your shoes lol. This place literally has everything and it's cool cause none of that bustle comes through the gate at the union hotel. I love it. if I did have one complaint, I'd say it was the wifi but that's my general sf complaint. Imagine being in a city where everybody is using the wifi for at least 3 devices at all time lol. In summation, I'd say great location. Responsible owners and a good deal considering where we are. Thanks. read more
