    Gaslight Anthem at Union Hall.

I am not a nightclub person, I am a mid-30's mom who likes to go to concerts. Having said that, I recently attended a concert a union hall for my favorite rock band on the planet. We had seen them before at the edmonton expo centre and that venue is the worst in the city. I feel that union hall is an incredible venue. I was able to stand less then 10 feet from the bands. The security had their shit together and was professional. The acoustics were perfect for the type of show that it was. $6.50 for a can of twisted iced tea was not something I was thrilled about. I will likely be back to see a show, not for the iced tea.

I thought this place was going to be more of a dump than it is. Before going there I checked out the Yelp reviews and got really worried. An establishment has to really work hard to obtain a 2-star average from almost 20 reviews. Truth be known, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. That's saying a lot because I hate everything. Except Skittles. The older reviews here pertain to when this venue was a teenybopper dance club and aren't really relevant now. But still, the general consensus about Union Hall is that the acoustics suck, it is often over-crowded, staff are rude, bathrooms are gross, floors are sticky, and the layout of the place is just plain weird. Yes, the sound is terrible. I forgot to bring a set of earplugs with me when I came here for a concert last week. When I walked out of the venue my hearing was fine. You know why? Because the building wasn't constructed to be a concert hall and therefore not designed to contain sound. This place is a bar disguised as a concert venue. On the plus side, you won't go deaf at Union Hall. This venue is standing room only except for a few bar chairs placed around its inner perimeter. If you arrive early you'll be able to snag a seat but you won't be able to see anything because as mentioned, everyone else will be standing up. The crowd wasn't so terrible the night I was there but obviously crowd size will be subjective depending on who is playing. The upper level was closed off but that didn't stop some people from sneaking up there only to be whisked away by security. I didn't have any issues with rude staff. The bouncer working the night I was there had a personality like Mr. Rogers. Super nice guy. If I could knit I'd make him a button-down sweater and present it to him the next time I attend a concert there. A yellow or blue one. The woman working the will-call window (which is really just a 6-foot craft table with a cash box) was a bit socially challenged but I wouldn't call her rude. She was just apparently born without any smiling muscles or any innate pleasant nature. My name was on the guest list already which obviously meant I didn't need a paper ticket. I'm a ticket stub collector so I asked her if I could have a ticket as a souvenir. She looked at me like I asked her to fill me up with the AIDS virus. She handed me a ticket stub and said, "You know that somebody ELSE brought this in, right?" I don't know whose ticket stub I got but it must have belonged to Bill Cosby or Donald Trump or somebody based on how she passed it to me. Alcohol selections are slim. There's only few brands of beer and coolers available with the usual selection of hard liquor. Beer is $6.75 a can. I can't comment on the facilities because I didn't use them. I did enjoy their goofy signs indicating which gender the bogs were for though. (See photo). I only took a photo of the women's sign, which come to think of it, makes me look like some pervy creeper who hung out outside the women's bathroom all night. I only stood there long enough to take the photo. Just because I may have had Cosby's ticket stub doesn't mean his nature rubbed off on me. I did dance like him during the show though. And it was far away from the washroom. Sticky floors. Yeah, they're sticky. So what? Don't show up in your bare feet and you'll be fine. All bars have floors like a glue factory on fire. Speaking of fires, if one ever breaks out at Union Hall during a concert it's gonna suck to be the band because the crowd will have to run over the stage to get to the exit. The layout of the venue has the stage practically right in front of the main door. When you walk in and see the band with their back to you you'll think that you just came in through the rear door. Craziness. On a separate note, Union Hall's social media presence is a joke. They tweet all their upcoming shows with the same line, "[Insert band name here] are in town. Will you be there?" or "Looking forward to seeing [Insert band name here]." It's laughable because they copy/paste the same line for every show. Don't bother trying to interact with them because they won't answer. Every bar/club has figured out the importance of social media interaction with their customers. Except this one. Maybe the ticket lady also does their social media?

The chairs are pretty standard for a venue like this and the stage set up looks pretty versatile. I liked the fact that the restroom was for all genders. There was some great art on display and for purchase as well. While this neighborhood is not one I visit frequently, it is an easily transit accessible location and there was street parking available in the area (I understand this is pretty limited when there's an event going on at the Stadium however). The building looks well weathered but well used as a live music venue. Purchasing tickets in advance was easy and the associated website was good. I'd definitely go to another show here. There is good acoustics for the venue in general. Signage isn't great -- it would be better if the building had better identification.

From the outside it still looks like a house but it's a funky house, the window coverings are pretty iconic of The Aviary already! The cool thing is, now that it's finished I can really see how much work they have put into the place! The entrance way is more like a venue (and less like walking into a living room) it brings you round to the bar and where you pay cover etc, once properly inside the space has a nice bar the length of the room, a handful of tables and chairs, decent size stage at the back, local art displayed all round and awesome sound! The vibe is cosy, and there big emphasis on supporting local artists - I dig that. I like the beer listings on the wall - mostly craft beer and Phil knows a lot about them and recommended a really nice lager to me while I was there. I already love watching bands in this space and can't wait to go back.

The venue is old and full of character for sure, but it is not accessible at all if you have any kind of mobility issues. And it's a shame, because the management does seem to WANT to be inclusive, but they are terribly limited by the physical location. It's true that you walk down a dingy and dank outdoor hallway to get to the entrance, and then walk up a whole bunch of stairs to get to the ID checking station. Then you go in and get to the ticket scanning station. Maybe she was having a bad day, but the attitude from her was really off-putting. When you have a mobile ticket, apparently they can't scan the QR Code if you have your phone in dark-mode. I've never had that issue with any other venue accepting my mobile tickets, but maybe their scanner is different. Anyway, she was really annoyed with me for that. Once inside, there were 3 bars open and the bartenders were all super friendly. We went back to the same bartender each time and she always remembered our orders. As others have said, the washrooms are down a flight of stairs. If you choose to leave while there are still people lined up to get in, you will have to squeeze past them in that same dank alley/hallway thing you came in - There are no other exits (though I'm sure you could use the other doors in the event of an emergency). The slanted dance floor is not everyone's cup of tea, but I think it adds to the quirky character of the old building. I thought the sound quality from the performers were great for both shows I saw and the lighting was excellent as well.

And then I had tickets for 2 shows just a few weeks from each other. So I figured let's review The Winspear. This concert hall is fantastic in terms of acoustics. I'm sure you've seen other reviews say something similar. There aren't many bad seats, and most of the shows here are concerts so have good sound will be the most important thing imo. The space is beautiful, bathrooms are clean, lots of space in the lobby, coat check is a reasonable $2, and the line for the bar or snacks wasn't to long. The one thing that's a downside is the seating chart, or maybe better to explain it trying to find your seat. The first show I saw (Foil, Arms, & Hog: Skittish) the usher pointed to where my seat was. Sat down and 10 minutes later a man came up and said I was in his seat. No problem, got up, asked another usher where to go. I was further down on the main floor. The second show (1922 film Nosferatu with a live playing of the massive Davis concert organ) my friend and I went were we thought we should sit. We entered on the left doors and there was no usher there. But something didn't feel right so I went to the main doors to ask an usher if we were in the right spot. He pointed to where we were sitting so I went back there. A few minutes later another group of people in that section we were in realized they were in the wrong spot when other people came to their seats. And that group(the ones that had to move) said they were in the section our tickets said. Obviously we were in the wrong spot, so we moved to right seats. So that was confusing with the seats and there isn't anything, other than on the doors to mark what the sections are. The fact that two different ushers at two different shows I've been to told me to go to the wrong seats is a bit frustrating. There is an online interactive map, but I find on a phone it's hard to see and navigate. Maybe have a paper map outside by the doors, especially the ones on the left and right side if no usher is going to be there. That's my one gripe about the Winspear. Other than that both the shows were great. The Winspear is right downtown and the library parkade is nearby. There's also Churchill station nearby, so pretty accessible for transit. I've already got tickets for a third show I'm seeing in a few weeks, so I hopefully I won't get sent to the wrong seats.
