My father has been buried in this cemetery since 1978. Unfortunately my mother passed away this past week and we needed to open one of the six plots we had purchased. We were informed the cemetery had been sold and they had a few issues with other funerals. It took three phone calls from the funeral home to even get a call back from someone. Then they wanted payment up front, which we said we would give them the check the day of burial. We needed a small hole as she was cremated and just being buried in a decorative box. We were given a time to be at the cemetery and our family started showing up 15 minutes prior and no one from the cemetery was there. Once the funeral home arrived with the remains we looked around for an employee which we could not find. We measured the depth of the hole and it was 21 inches. The height of the container was 9 inches. The law states you must have 18 inches of dirt from the top of the container. The tools were left so my brother and brother in law dug the rest of the hole to meet requirements. We put the container in the ground and filled the hole back up with dirt. As we finished a worker came up to us and said "you did my job". We said well, you weren't here. He stated he was sitting in his van and we should have seen him. Seven of us did not see him at all. The employee was argumentative and very disrespectful. He stated we were the ones causing problems because use we were asking questions. The whole experience was awful and so sad that in our grieving we have to deal with this. We also paid 60% more than a cemetery in a neighboring town. I will be contacting the Better Business Bureau and the Pennsylvania Cemetery, Cremation & Funeral Association. If you had an experience please share it so we can get this business to do better for families and the many people buried in Union Cemetery. read more
