If you're looking for experienced hairdressers for black hair, give Hair Gallery a try…read more Needed to get my hair (locs) washed and twisted. Had a few other leads but stumbled on Hair Gallery online and realized this was my old salon. I live in Toronto and only spend the occasional summer in Ottawa, so I had lost contact with the Gallery. So glad I found them. THEIR NEW ADDRESS IS 421 MCARTHUR. Carlene is an expert... I mean the girl KNOWS HAIR. Nothing phases her. She has seen me through bone straight pixie cuts to curly weaves, from perms to my current natural locs. The patronage spans from 2003 to present day! This salon moved from Rideau to Montreal St. and is now on McArthur. The new shop needs work (still going through renovations I believe) and has fewer chairs. The atmosphere is casual (expect your usual salon banter and laughter), but the previous locations had radio, waiting areas. The receptionist/phone manners are really lacking but if you can see past that, you'll be happy with the service. All of the above are why I can't quite give HG four stars, much as I would have in the past. But there rates are comparable so if the frills don't matter, give them a try. I RECOMMEND: Booking early.. Be prepared to wait two weeks for a slot, longer if you are only free on weekend. Also I really recommend Carlene for short hair. She's got the touch. EXTRA TIP: From outside, this doesn't look like a salon but it is.

Quite a different experience this time around. The young man that I rebooked with doesn't seem to work there anymore, so I guess I got the owner. Nice guy, but five separate times in my 20-minute haircut, he stopped to take cash, to check appointments, to take phone calls, sometimes for several minutes at a time. This ended up being a very rushed haircut, done in stages and I wasn't happy with the result. He didn't ask if I wanted any product in it. I just felt rushed out the door and ended up a very unhappy cutomer. I won't be back. There's way too many barbers out there to put up with half-assed service.

There were some locations with some ok reviews, but I walk past La Coupe Courante (LCC) everyday and decided to look specifically into them. There are more good reviews for LCC on Google than other locations, so I figured I'd give them a try. I am so happy!!! He was able to fit me in at lunch like I asked and did my hair perfectly. My hair actually looks so good. I can be super picky about it and have had issues in the past with uneven cuts after going too long without a hair cut, but it was cut and styled so nicely. He also told me I could stop by for free trims on my bangs when needed, which I definitely appreciate. The price for a cut is 55+tax, but you get 20% off on your first visit. I'm 100% calling this my new hairdressers and am so glad to have found someone downtown who offers a great cut at a reasonable price.

That's why I gave a 3/5. However the reason I didn't give a 4/5 or higher is because the design on my shaved part of the style she had messed up significantly ! I didn't say anything because I felt it was still nice looking just not what I was wanting/expecting! Also usually with a hair cut you get a wash... I didn't receive one nor did she even ask. After being completely exhausted about getting my hair done at Walmart... I have realized now that it is not worth the hassle to pay cheap and be frustrated as heck! Go to a hair stylist that is more expensive but is capable in doing your style!
