A good mix of hardcovers and paperbacks in a wide range of sections. Prices seemed fair to low compared to what is typical for used bookstores. In addition to books, they also had a small inventory of new books, comic books, CDs, and records. It has a pleasant open atmosphere, but I wouldn't describe it as a cozy place to sit and check out the books. The only downside I have with this place is the parking meters or parking garages. The only used bookstore in the area that comes to mind is that you either must be on foot or pay to park.

There were enough employees around that I had no problem finding one when I had a question, and when I didn't need them, they left me alone to browse at my leisure. Used bookstores on the other hand, were where you'd go digging for treasure among aged tomes and other peoples' cast offs. Perhaps that's what's keeping West Side Book Shop around. When the instant gratification of new novelty is clicks away at your fingertips, the promise of unpredictability, mystique and snippets of nostalgia draws customers to enter its doors. The space isn't large, really more of a living room transformed by wall to wall shelves and mini mountains on the central surfaces and displays. Here you too can own a piece of history or simply extend the life of a book or periodical. Sometimes you can find a rare edition or obscure title. Past times I've been there I haven't had much interaction with the staff though they were pleasant when checking out. The shop is located in downtown Ann Arbor so parking can be a pain, though if you're not too picky and prefer not to pay, you can always park a little further in the more residential areas and walk over. There are plenty of structures and lots too. They'll be celebrating 50 years in 2025. Hope they continue to be celebrated in Ann Arbor for years to come!

GW and ER are such important, 'kindred souls' that supporters put up the $$$$ to cut a door connecting the shops so you can wander back & forth. ER is strongly focused on serving neglected social communities ~ afflicted children and the bereaved as well as the neighborhood's substantial gay/lesbian and 'minority' populations. Doesn't have great breadth of stock but will order any book they can find for you, call when it comes in [and save you shipping]. They routinely discount bestsellers and have a 'freebie' section where lots of really good books get recycled for nominal contribution. Staff is sharp, personable, worth talking to. There's a fairly eclectic magazine rack, greeting cards, some world craft items, works by local artists, and specialized racks related to Michigan and to medical cannabis. Scott also makes a small community room available, hosts readings and guest authors; there's no telling who you'll run into at the ER / GW ... ' Also on 2000 block are Italian, Somali and Thai eateries and the Green Door blues bar = well worth getting off the bus.. ER no longer operates Postal substation ~ was huge money loser.
