And the thing is most of the books here are very reasonably priced if not outright bargains. It might be heresy but I think I like the Northern iteration of John K King books more than the OG King store in downtown - and that too is five stars. With just one level and a layout nothing like the sprawling labyrinth of the flagship store, the Ferndale spin-off is much more manageable and browsable. Not too mention not as freezing in the winter or boiling in the summer. (I just gave my review of John K King South - now nine years old! - a quick reread and I was so reverential to that store I didn't even mention that. No crying in bookstores, I guess.) It's been far too long since I've been to JKKN. In fact I asked the sole employee tonight, wearing a bandana almost just like mine as a mask - I think his might have been midnight blue and not black - if they still had a cat. He told me no, that was before his time. I already figured it wouldn't be the same cat, but it's too bad that late feline doesn't have a successor. Bookstore cats are even more of a dying breed than old school indie bookstores like this. I came in for a cookbook or three, as it's embarrassing how little cooking knowledge and experience I have in my forties and I'm looking to step my game up. I ended up leaving with almost $70 worth of books, with a $5 2 disc DVD set of Cream in concert being part of that total. I got a John Waters hardcover memoir of hitchhiking for $8.50, well below the $26 cover price. I picked up the first collection of Walking Dead comics for $5.95, a big beautiful coffee table called Masters of American comics for $12, Academic Graffiti by W.H. Auden and some sports guidebooks from the 70s for my dad. Nothing local, St. Louis Blues, New Orleans Saints and Atlanta Flames, but they're wonderfully vintage. There were also a handful of books that tempted me mightily but some modicum of self control kept me from snatching up. A book about The Stooges, one about erotic comics and one about the Cannonball cross country race are still on the shelves waiting for a lucky patron to take them home. When I finished cashing out my bandana clad clerk asked me if I wanted a bag or a box. That dude knows what's up, as I had some serious weight in that stack. Now I got a nice old Xerox box when I get my purchases filed away. The North remembers!

When I came here, I spent more time and bought less than other bookstores in the area. The bookstore "smell" is like a 3/10, which means you know you're in a used bookstore when you walk in, although the inventory is all clean and well-maintained. Parking can be tight, but there are a few spots in front; otherwise, I've had to park on the side streets and walk in. Because this is a larger than normal used bookstore, they have some other items like ephemera and art and some distinct book sections you don't usually find in the smaller independent bookstores. The collectible and children's areas are quite lacking, and many filler titles help fill the store's shelves. The name is shared with the giant used book depository downtown, but this is a distinct shopping experience.

Book-off has a HUGE selection of just about everything, and the pricing is awesome too - it has a section of $1-2 books, and I noticed they had a lot of $2 DVDs, too. As other reviews have mentioned, there's a huge gaming section of things to buy plus Japanese-inspired things like manga and anime and accessories. My friend and I mostly stuck to the book sections, and we had to leave because they were closing at 8pm (it's a weekday), but we definitely would've stayed longer if not. I ended up getting two children's books for my daughter plus a paperback for myself ... two were $5 and one was $7. I did price check one on Amazon (the $7 one) and it was $6.25 there, but this way I already have the book in-hand (and it was a sensory book full of things she can touch, so she loved it). Overall this place was fabulous and I highly recommend. It's apparently a chain but I'm not sure how many exist - I know there are some in Japan though.

They also have sections of discounted movies and cds. I was pretty close to buying a hootie and the blowfish cd, but I ended up holding off in the end. The service was amazing as they hand you a map upon entry and there is always someone around to help. And not to mention the books are reasonably priced. I will tell you to make sure you have time to spend because its so much, you can literally get lost in everything they have to offer.

Not gonna lie I was starting to get overwhelmed, and it is pretty dusty in there. It's super stuffed with so many books and other physical media. I appreciate that they have a classics section on the first floor to easily look for the most popular books, and I found one book to buy. I love that they are truly dedicated to used and rare books. There's so much to discover here. They also have some postcards and vintage valentine cards at the front, which I looked through and found one I liked. The prices are great too, and they also have a few free books near the entrance.

They had them ready and waiting for me the following afternoon. Store is clean and well organized. And the employee at the front desk was very friendly - seemed very nice when checking out the couple in front of me and when some people walked into the store after me. I'll definitely go back. And the online ordering/pickup system was so easy. Plus there are multiple small stores to stop in that shopping center - TJ maxx, hallmark, better health, an ACE hardware - so then I can pop in multiple spots!

Books. Books. Books…read more I'm slowly getting my momentum back when it comes to reading, and it was time I put a dent into my wishlist. I came here the other day specifically for Pete Souza's new book, which is hysterical and amusing after only three pages. I would've saved around 10 bucks had I ordered online, but I couldn't wait 3-5 days. The employees don't seem too high strung, and seem very eager to help you out, which is great because it can be annoying when it's obviously that you need help, yet staff just walks by you. When I initially entered the store the first thing to catch my eye was a mug. I end up picking it up, only to add to the 40+ mugs I already have and don't really need. In addition to mugs they're tons of gadgets, cards, keychains, ect... This store almost feels like a an outlet Barnes and Nobles meets Borders. Plan on return to do some Christmas shopping for friends/family who also loves books.

Books are grouped into sections and appear to mostly be titles from the last twenty years. The ratio of paperbacks to hardcovers is high. A lot of options for avid contemporary readers as everything is a well-priced value. Sections also include an excellent well-stocked kid's area. I found the books to be neat and well-organized. The uniqueness of this bookshop is in its eclectic array of items beyond the books. There is a little of everything from records, comics, graphic novels, and other unique and interesting items. Nothing seems to be high-end collectibles, just fun, interesting stuff nerds like me like to see when they go shopping. I thought the staff was friendly, and overall, a unique experience. I will be back. Not a place for people looking to acquire ephemera, vintage, antiquarian, or collectible first editions. Heads up, the parking out front, I thought, was quite treacherous. Be aware that the main road is busy, and cars are coming fast.
