Basic country pub - decor is a bit out of date, but has a tired comfort about the place. Dishes are unimaginative, but tasty

Oh The Albany! Right, I'm going to go right out on a limb here (yet again) and say that this is the…read morebest backstreet boozer in the whole of Cardiff. I'll pop off in a minute to buy a gigantic beery rosette to slap on the side of the building but first I'll explain my decision. Firstly, it's in a proper back street location, to this day I still get lost when ambling up to it and wobbling away from it. It also scores points for its slightly misleading name (see The Gower, The Roath Park etc.). It's kind of near Albany Road, but not quite near enough. It has cracking, and I mean cracking, cask beers. The marvellously moustachioed chap behind the bar knows his beer and he knows how to keep it and serve it. The lounge is a beautiful setting to get nicely sozzled in, all stained glass windows and low lighting. There's the beer garden that is, again, a beautiful setting to get nicely sozzled in. It has also has the bar where the lager drinkers are safely contained, content with multiple screens and two sky boxes. It even has a skittle alley. It has everything. The Albany is, quite frankly, a brilliant pub.

The Albany Hotel is a pub in Roath, just off Albany Road. The main problem I have with the…read moreestablishment is finding it! I can always vaguely remember where it is, but end up turning down a few red herring streets before I eventually stumble across it. It needs a homing beacon. The best thing about this pub is its beer garden, and it's worth pottering down there just to try it out for a sunny afternoon. There is an undercover area and heaters for those people who forgot to bring warm jumpers for the evening. Due to its location, this is a pub mainly populated with locals, rather than your standard student-filled pubs elsewhere in the neighbourhood. This means that it can be a little quieter, but is also more friendly, in my opinion.

The service is first class and the staff are extremely polite and freindly and absolutely nothing is too much trouble for them. I have eaten there on many occasions and have never had a complaint about the food. The have a wide variety on the menu and it is always cooked wonderfully with very good portions. I especially love the Sunday lunch and is great for those with a big appetite! The prices are great and the meals are excellent value for money. They often have live entertainment, there is a pool table and great outdoor eating/playing area. Wide screen TV. They have a big car park. They also have a function room to hire and I believe they do not charge for this hire but you would need to confirm that. All in all I would recommend the Port 'O' Call.

It requires a 2-mile detour off the A48 between St Mellons and Cardiff. The menu offers a fair choice, ranging from bacon butties for breakfast (perhaps with golfers in mind), through to more substantial dishes later in the day, including pan-fried venison steak with red wine, mussels in tomato and herb sauce, fish and vegetable pie, roast duck breast with orange sauce, and bread and butter pudding with custard. £40 for 2. There is a good choice of real ales, which included HB and Speckled Hen on my last visit, a picturesque pub garden with outside tables, widescreen tv which implied the availability of sports events while you eat and drink, and its split-level layout features an upper gallery where you can sit down and survey those below.

But to find yourself as a pub opposite the Ballardian nightmare that is Gablafa Interchange with a recently opened Wetherspoon's smack bang in the middle of is without doubt a nightmare. The Three Horse Shoes has had this problem on its hands for almost a year now and is fighting it admirably. It has chosen the fronts of sports TV and community feel on which to wage its war. The former is signified by the large LCD TVs dotted around the bar and the large banners advertising both Sky Sports and ESPN. The latter is denoted by the friendly staff, the banter they have with the customers and the general cosiness feel of the place. It also keeps the impact on your wallet to a minimum with Brains' Famous Five for £3.85 meal promotion, Fosters at £2.30 and Brains IPA at £1.85. There's a darts board, a standard It-Box and occasional live music. They also have some bizarre high seats from which only basketball players couldn't dangle their legs and feel like a five-year-old. I was expecting the worst when I finally made it across Gabalfa Interchange, but what I found was a friendly, clean, and cosy community pub.

The staff will validate your ticket, but it's an unwelcomed hassle, nonetheless. Once you make it inside, Grape and Olive does offers a fine dining experience, marked by beautifully presented food and helpful and friendly staff. But I somehow feel like I'm dining in a hotel restaurant - there's not much to distinguish it from its competitors in terms of interior design - it just seems sadly bland to me. But they do offer free Wi-Fi, making it an ideal location for a business lunch. The menu, however, remains its saving grace. It's always refreshing for pizza enthusiasts to dine happily alongside red meat aficionados (I was in the latter category and found my steak to be cooked to perfection), so major points for Grape and Olive's extensive menu which is sure to satisfy all palettes.

The Grape & Olive is in a bizarre location, stuck on the end of Wedal Road. It finds itself surrounded by a medical centre, an old people's home, a graveyard (no direct relation) and a council recycling facility (ditto). It used to be a Charlie Chalk's years ago, and if only they left the ball pit in the basement, then there would something interesting and fun here. Instead you're left swimming through a sea of self-satisfaction and smugness. The service here is generally excellent, though with Brains cutting back hours across the board, it might not be long before the quality of service dips, through no fault of the staff, but because there simply isn't enough of them. The proximity to Heath Hospital means that there is a pay and display car park, though this can be claimed back from the bar. Another hindrance to this awkward place.
