Just starting my journey back home from State College to drop off my sister, I needed gas. Since I only had an Exxon card, here I went. Then I saw that it had a Unimart. I was excited, I hadn't been in a Unimart since the one that was in Holland, PA moved sometime in the mid 90s, and it brought back memories of stopping there with my dad on the way to or from my grandparents house.
I used the bathroom in this place. Abysmal. The "mart" itself was in disarray and set up in a horrible unorganized fashion, with aisles claustrophobicly thin. But, glutton for punishment that I am and hungry as I was, I bought an overpriced "hoagie" that was sitting in a coldcase and some no-name birch beer that seemed like it might be good due to it being from an independent company.
What might you ask, was I expecting from a hoagie from a gas station?. Edibleness perhaps? Non-revulsion?
The roll was stale and had the consistency and taste of a hot dog roll one may find at a dollar store. The ham was dry and tasteless and the cheese had melted and molded into the roll and had started to sweat a sheen of grease. The company that made them put the vegetables in individual plastic packets, seemingly in an attempt to maintain freshness in the spirit of McDonald's colossal failure of the 80's, the McDLT. I BELIEVE the company behind this abomination was B&W Subs of Palmyra, PA. I remember that it was a "Letter&Letter" of Palmyra, PA so it probably was. I looked it up after the fact on Google and that's what showed up. I won't pass judgment on their freshly made sandwiches, but they shouldn't have tried to package them and ship them out, putting their name on something so awful.
The birch beer was oddly lacking in taste though refreshing enough due simply to being a cold liquid.
All in all, a very disappointing visit, even for low general expectations of a gas station convenience store. read more
