After a week of wurst, I had to admit a bowl of hot noodles sounded good. First, we shared an order of fresh spring rolls. The spring rolls were exactly as we expected them to be, but they were served with a sweet dipping sauce as opposed to the ubiquitous peanut sauce we get at home. Not a bad change. While not exactly the same as the pho we're used to eating in Southern California, the pho at Pho 18 was satisfying. Unlike the pho at home, which is served with a big plate of bean sprouts, sliced jalapeños, basil and lime wedges, this came with a bit of shredded iceberg lettuce, a lemon wedge, and a tiny slice of Thai chili. The meat wasn't the thin shaved beef we find at home, but rather small chunks. It was tender, though. The broth wasn't as flavorful - I suppose they need to make some accommodations for EU palates, but they had a sriracha and fish sauce on the table which we used to adjust to our liking. One of my girls had the bun which also was good. The owners were attentive and friendly - surprised that we knew the Vietnamese names for menu items. Prices for this kind of cuisine are higher in Salzburg - (€ 8,50) than we would pay at home, where a big bowl of pho is just $5. But, if you're craving pho, you won't be disappointed.

Maybe this place is is only 3 or 4 stars somewhere else but here in the foothills of the Alps it is 5 for sure!

She said the people are nice, the place beautiful, etc. Midway though my vacation, I find all of this to be true up until the point we went into Aozai Restaurant for some Asian food in Salzburg, Austria. We walked in and an Asian lady seated us. She was extremely unfriendly, to say the least. Not a smile on her face as she greeted us and provided us an abrupt response when we asked her where the restroom was. After we reviewed the menu, she took our orders in the continued extremely unprofessional and rude manner. After taking our orders, she just walked away, without so much as a kind word or friendly gesture to us. It is very obvious this woman is either unhappy at her job or did not have a good day. Regardless, it's no excuse for her action. At that moment, we decided we do not have to put up with this kind of service, service that we are paying, and left the restaurant. We did provide feedback to another lady in the restaurant and she was trying hard to make excuses for the Asian lady. Again, no excuse for this kind of service. I have never been to a restaurant where I actually stood up and left abruptly as I did here. I cannot believe the Asian lady works in the service industry based on how she treats customers. She belongs in a job where she doesn't have to interact with customers because at that manner, any business would shut down based on her service delivery soon. I would give this restaurant a zero star if that was possible. I would NOT recommend this restaurant to anyone, especially with this Asian lady present as their waitress, and if she is not the waitress and actually the owner/manager, then she needs service training before opening/running a restaurant.
