We were headed out for a traditional, Austrian meal (walking in the rain), when we passed Pho 18…read more My girls both said "Pho!" After a week of wurst, I had to admit a bowl of hot noodles sounded good.
First, we shared an order of fresh spring rolls. The spring rolls were exactly as we expected them to be, but they were served with a sweet dipping sauce as opposed to the ubiquitous peanut sauce we get at home. Not a bad change.
While not exactly the same as the pho we're used to eating in Southern California, the pho at Pho 18 was satisfying. Unlike the pho at home, which is served with a big plate of bean sprouts, sliced jalapeños, basil and lime wedges, this came with a bit of shredded iceberg lettuce, a lemon wedge, and a tiny slice of Thai chili. The meat wasn't the thin shaved beef we find at home, but rather small chunks. It was tender, though. The broth wasn't as flavorful - I suppose they need to make some accommodations for EU palates, but they had a sriracha and fish sauce on the table which we used to adjust to our liking.
One of my girls had the bun which also was good.
The owners were attentive and friendly - surprised that we knew the Vietnamese names for menu items.
Prices for this kind of cuisine are higher in Salzburg - (€ 8,50) than we would pay at home, where a big bowl of pho is just $5. But, if you're craving pho, you won't be disappointed.
