Had some great drinks and adequate food at this local Mexican chain. It may not be authentic but they're not trying to be that to be honest. Uncle Julio's has a few locations including this one in Naperville. Each of these has a slightly moderated menu. They actually changed a lot of it and got rid of some great things. Coming in here in the evening we noticed it wasn't busy. It's one of those things that should have been a sign. They changed a lot of the menu too. Got rid of a lot of the favorites. Was a lot more things previously for vegetarians. It's about $8 for the cheapest margarita. This is called the Julio's Gold Rocks. This is made with agave house sour and Jose Cuervo Gold, which is pretty good stuff. Got us the Taco Plate. It's 2 tacos for $16, which sounds like a lot it seems. This comes with a pretty big salad though. Got the tacos with avocados. Then these were topped by things like cheese which I left off, and tomatoes. Came with a pretty big salad which was bigger than the tacos actually. The meal actually was pretty satisfying. Got to say it used to be better. It's not like the other locations, because they don't have a happy hour. The menu also used to be a lot better and bigger, so there's limited choices for vegans and vegetarians. read more

Uncle Julio's was next door to my hotel and I stopped in for lunch. I sat at the bar and was immediately brought water, chips and salsa. The restaurant had only been open for about 10 minutes when I arrived so the bartender was still setting things up. However, he was very attentive to me while multi-tasking. The salsa is some of the best salsa I've had at a restaurant in a long time. The flavors were layered and it was just enough spice. The chips were warm and fresh. My margarita was perfect after a long travel day before thanksgiving. I ordered the shrimp enchiladas which has a pablano sauce. They were so good. I could eat that pablano sauce by itself. I could tell the food is made in-house and they care about the quality that they serve. I'm not in the area often but Uncle Julio's will be my first stop the next time I'm near. read more

Wow what a shit show. We showed up with reservations and waited for forever, then took a bar seat because folks were walking in and being seated there sooner than our half hour standing around. Then we sit down order drinks and apps and another 45 minutes sitting with water and greasy chips no salsa. The manger here is pretty much brain dead for the way they staffed this night. Went last night. It's been a few years since we had gone and then remembered why. Our waitress brought water glasses but no water. We had to ask for the water. Our friend is gluten free and they don't really have any options. Waitress went to manager and they suggested the fajitas with no marinade, ok, no problem. She said it may take a little longer, again, no problem. My husbands and my order came out so quickly and my friends was 15 mins later. They should have held ours to come out with hers, ridiculous. Her tortillas were dripping with oil and the chicken was so over cooked she barely ate it. My husbands and my meal overall taste was not good either. I had parts that were cold. We visited here after our kid's open house at school on a Thursday night. There was hardly anyone here. The food was great, came out fast. I had the carnitas tacos, my husband had the fish tacos. The good: The bartender sorta read my mind and suggested a great "non margarita" cocktail called The Spritzer... Tito's, St Germaine, and the result was a spirited drink that wasn't sweet but refreshing with a little punch. The not so good: Probably some of the worst guacamole I've ever had... tasteless mash with big pieces of onion, no heat and two bland sauces... the chips however are good! Ambience is ok and because I skirted the lunch and after work crowd it wasn't noisy... after experiencing the sad guac, I got 3 pork tacos to go... dry and tasteless too. Did I pick the wrong thing? I really liked what this restaurant was about 5 years ago. I've tried coming here for my birthday with a small family group in 2024 and again in 2025 and after last night, this is our last. We arrived on time for our reservation, the dining room was eerily quiet on a Sunday evening. So when we arrived at our table to find a bus boy bin sitting on it, then watch the hostess pick it up and set it on a near by table and then seat us without cleaning the table was simply unhygienic. That bus boy bin was moved table to table our entire meal, just piling more and more plates in it as it moved tables. It really "kills the ambiance" to have someone else's sour food sitting next to you. Only up side was that we got to use it for the nearly 15 baby wipes we used to clean our own table because there was a white sticky substance all over the table (like icing). The floor was also so sticky that my sandal almost fell off as I walked across it. It doesn't feel good to eat dinner in such a dirty environment. We waited 15 minutes for waters, food was delivered well but the price for this experience was a tough pill to swallow. Our waiter was pleasant but didn't seem to have the support he needed from bussing staff. At one point my husband had to take my water because his was never refilled, neither was my fountain drink. We had similar experiences last year where the waitress didn't get my order correct and I ended up having to box the replacement as it came after my family had finished their dinners. I even made a complaint privately with the website as there were other issues with that meal, and simply never heard back. What used to be a speedy, spirited, and anticipated place for a meal in our family, has become a tired, slow, lack luster disappointment. We found ourselves saying we wish we had gone anywhere else. It's a not so Happy Birthday when the ride home involves hoping you don't get food poisoning. read more

I can easily get those for much cheaper at my nearest Mexican restaurant. The portions were huge though for what you pay, you can definitely take leftovers home. Parking was sufficient. We had a reservation so we did not have to wait long. Service wasn't terrible, it was decent. Next time, I'll have to come here only for dessert. Yes, the chocolate piñata was filling. I'd been to Uncle Julio's a handful of times but they recently made a few branding changes. Our waiter, Kevin, was super helpful at explaining some of the changes. The most notable difference is that they swapped to a more Tex-mex style rather than authentic Mexican. Still lots of great menu options though! The chips and salsa were great, and so were the steak quesadillas, Baja fried fish tacos, and shrimp fajitas. The quesadillas were my personal favorite. We finished with a chocolate pinata since we came to celebrate a birthday which is one of the highlights! Also highly recommend making reservations! read more

On November 17th, 2023 I met my now fiancé for the first time at their restaurant. We ate, drank and talked there for 4 hours. The food was superb to say the least. We went back on November 16th, 2024 to celebrate. We tried to get our table from a year ago but couldn't. The area was reserved. After explaining why I asked to the management, he comped us either a free appetizer or a free dessert. We sat down and ordered our food. It was ok, but not as great as we remembered it. We ordered an appetizer, our entrees and we shared their ice cream sundae. The appetizer was chicken quesadillas and it was pretty good. She ordered tacos as did I. They were ok. The dessert was amazing! But what was more amazing was the bill. The manager instead comped us a free appetizer AND a free dessert. My fiancé is moving in with me full time now. Moving from Naperville to my log cabin on the river. So we wont be in Naperville much anymore but I do suggest going to Uncle Julio's for dinner. read more

We went to Uncle Julio's today for my birthday. We were surprised when we saw the new menu. They condensed it by half- there are no vegetarian or vegan options. In the past, we could get mushroom tacos, my daughter always would order some kind of quinoa bowl. I would get veggie fajitas( onions, peppers, zucchini, yellow squash). They said they got rid of squash and zucchini. All they had was pepper and onions- but you'd still Pay the price of a meat fajita dish! What happened to Uncle Julios?? We used to love this restaurant and even friends from overseas used to love going there for the fresh fajitas and home made tortillas! Today our server was hostile to us (to the point where the people at my table were laughing as we were so uncomfortable), the food portions were a fraction of what they used to be, the menu was chopped down to bare bones, the table side guac only came with avocados and tomatoes (wtf??) and the tortillas were microwaved flour tortillas that I could have bought for a two bucks at the grocery store--not even high end grocery store tortillas...I am taking, sitting on the shelf for 3 months tortillas...and this from a place that I used to go to for their pillowy soft melt in your mouth homemade tortillas...it was shocking. Everyone at the table was pretty disappointed. the beans are no longer vegetarian (not mentioned and several people who cannot eat bacon got a mouthful before we found out). The napkins were dirty. It was just awful. I am sad as this used to be such a delicious place to for fresh high quality food, and now I wouldn't go there on a bet. read more

Yesterday my family and I visited the Naperville Uncle Julio's location. We sat in the bar area so that we can watch some of the Chicago Bears game. We had Danarius as our waiter and were absolutely WOW'd by his service and personality. Even my 8 year old son was impressed by his friendliness. I'd like to say he was well trained, but I don't even think that kind of service can be taught. When we are back in the area we hope we can stop by and see him again.
