We had a nice visit here. The staff were nice and kept the lines moving; both at the gate and in…read morethe snack bar. The snack bar had the traditional faire, and a few surprises. We had their loaded fries which is topped with a homemade sweet n tangy meat sauce. Not bad. A Philly cheesesteak. Even better. The star of the show was a blueberry sundae fried dough. For a moment, I thought my wife was going to leave me and move in to the theater so she could have them every day... After tasting it, I wouldn't blame her. Make sure to support the snack bar, it is how theaters like this stay in business. Obviously you can't beat the value of 2 for 1 priced movies, so what's not to love? I'd stop by again if I were in the area and recommend you do the same.

This place needs a write-up on Atlas Obscura for being a pitch perfect example of Upstate ephemera…read more It's such a great piece of vintage Americana in CNY. Located in the sleepy town of Palatine Bridge, El Rancho Drive-In was a fixture of my childhood and adolescence. In fact, it's the only drive-in I've ever been to. (Not surprising when you learn that there are only 400 left in the USA.) There's really not much to this spot except a tall, concrete wall with a screen overlay. An entrance booth outside (double-features are $5 for kids/$8 for adults, cash only) and a small building that houses a digital projector, a concession stand, and restrooms. The building is somewhat run down but serviceable with small bathrooms and a spot to grab a soda or any number of menu items. Besides that, it's pretty much an open field where you park your car and turn the radio to 90.5 for audio. (No old-school clip-on speakers here.) The owners and staff are amiable, and you can tell that they genuinely love bringing this unique experience to the community. They do have a no outside food and drink policy, which they really can't enforce. However, it's highly recommended that you purchase something from the snack bar as they really need the support to stay operational. A few years back, they were required to buy a digital projector that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. It's a family-owned small town business, so that's no small sum. Concessions are affordable and tasty here. Far less expensive and a much more romantic experience than your generic cineplex. It's also worth a drive if you are visiting nearby Sharon Springs or Cooperstown. In the future, it would be amazing if they could start showing a wider range of films and promoting themselves a little better. Right now, they're good at getting the most recent releases and bring them to the local audience, which is great. These offerings are usually kid-friendly. However, it would be terrific if they also did nights with classic films or allowed you to rent it for events. I would imagine that seeing something like "Casablanca" or "Back to the Future" here would be so cool!

Finally! I'm so excited that I finally got to see a movie here and experience this quirky drive in!…read moreAnd even though it's less quirky than usual- I hear people were NOT allowed to tow their boats in to watch Jaws as in years past, due to Social Distancing of cars- it was still DELIGHTFUL & FUN! The drinks, food, service, staff and vibe were great. They accept/prefer credit cards and allow leashed, well-behaved dogs, even in the Beer Garden. Bathrooms are limited to one person or family group at a time. Masks required when ordering. Hand sanitizer available, and staff was wearing masks CORRECTLY! With such a dearth of fun activities these days, I don't know why they're not sold out every night! Get tickets with the FB page links. It's only 17 miles from Delmar- a beautiful drive less than a half hour. Follow on FB or check the Albany Times Union for movies. There are several each week. My description for those who know these places, is: if the Indian Ladder Brewery and the quirky Strand Theater in Schroon Lake had a baby, it'd be this!

We ordered chocolate chip cookies and they bring them to your car during the movie. The dude was so pumped about the cookies that I think I love him. But yeah this place is great. Definitely want to go back. I'm gonna do a little side rant about Yelp reviews here because there's something I don't get. I see a lot of great reviews and then a 4 star review. If everything was awesome just give it a 5. Those 4s add up and I feel like people that use Yelp are always looking for the great reviews. You get a 5 and 4 from two people that love something. Now you have a 4.5 that should have been a 5. Definitely order a cookie.

The grounds were in good shape and the snack bar had some murals on the outside. Snacks were very cheap, but the quality of some of the food was reflective of that. I would stick to the popcorn, candy and soda here. That being said, it is important to support the snack bar at places like this. So make sure to stop in, it's what keeps them open. I would stop by here again if I was in the area, the value for the money is well worth it.

The concession stand is old and takes forever to get something, but that isn't out of the ordinary at any old movie theater either. The movie quality was above average. The sound is great, they still have the old school speakers you can put in your window (and they work) or you can use your radio. I was surprised they still have the speakers, most drive-ins have gotten rid of those long ago. The bathrooms were sub-par, but again, what do you expect for an outdoor theater operating on their last dollars. As a guy it wasn't that bad for me - I can imagine for a girl it wouldn't be the best. But for $25 myself, my girl, and her two kids watched 2 movies for $25 - that isn't bad at all. Going to the theater would have run us at least $40 per movie would be my guess.

Love this theater!…read more Built in 1948, this huge (350 seat!) theater is vintage but has been fully modernized, with a digital projector and Dolby. They show a mix of feature films, including the big-name first-run attractions but only have one screen. Technical quality is excellent. The arched roof (built on wooden beams--like a wooden ship, upside down) makes it like a big tube and you get that big movie theater sound. I love the history and the lobby is like a little museum. The original projector, a carbon-arc, 16-mm film projector, is there next to a display case (which used to be the candy counter) with old tickets, signage, and relics of the past. The lobby has posters from old showings, like Godfather, The Graduate. The ticket booth and many of the furnishings are original but the place is very clean and well organized. Fun fact: Originally the Harden Theater, named for its founder, it became the Arden Theater when the H fell off the marquee and the owner didn't want to be bothered to replace it. We had a birthday party there and the owner, Kristina was very helpful. They showed a movie at 10:30 on a Saturday, then we had cake and snacks in the lobby, then went to a local pizza place. Fun place for a party and a great theater.

I went in the winter and wore my heavy (expedition weight) parka, plus a fleece jacket underneath and high neck long-sleeve jersey, planning to keep only one lay on, but wound up keeping all three and was freezing. Problem is there's a large ceiling fan which acts as an air-conditioner. I lived in the area for over 2 decades in the mountains and managed with a large fan instead of air conditioning. It drops the temperature at least 10 degrees if large and forceful enough and the one at the theatre impacts the seating area. I kept my hat on and heavy gloves but was shivering. Had to leave early after paying and warmed up in the lobby where it's quite comfortable then went outside where I was toasty warm with all of the layers. There's a disconnect. It's not as if it's summertime and they need to cool it down. People were commenting on how cold it was but muddled though. Please Walton Theatre Owner, turn off the fan during the winter. I'll visit again during the summer but don't expect to be comfortable if attend during the winter. The Southside Mall is comfortable year-round with reclining seats so if you want physical comfort, that's the way to go during the winter as an alternative to consider. It's a shame that the owner didn't think of physical comfort. The screen is large and there's enough refreshments, prices are affordable, and there's a nice variety of offerings, but that fan is a deal-killer for me.
