The staff at Torrensville are always friendly and happy to help. I don't know how they do it, rolling sushi all day and dealing with the always long line of hungry people at the counter. They greet everyone with a smile and whiz them through with record pace. Its like a factory line of freshness. I could eat a tempura prawn roll every day for lunch for the rest of my life with just a dash of soy (and wasabi if that's your thing). They say we don't get enough iodine in our diets these days because we eat so much less salt than we used to but did you know the seaweed wrap used to make sushi is a valuable source of iodine. Iodine is vital for both our metabolism and hormone systems to function properly so the tip is, eat more sushi and give yourself a boost. And go visit the guys at Cherry Blossom Torrensville.

Staff are friendly, happy to help or to wait while you dither hopelessly over the multitude of choices (this is my usual gambit at sushi bars - consider every possible combination of rolls then finally pick a couple at random 'cos I just can't decide) - and will gladly slice a full roll into four or five perfect little bite size pieces (never underestimate this - it can make it SO much easier if you need to eat on the run between meeting clients, etc) Sushi rolls are pretty much constantly hand made on the premises to keep the display stocked and ready for sale, without allowing any time to get stale or wasted - they're very dedicated to keeping just enough stock ready on hand, so sometimes you can need to wait a minute or two for fresh rolls to come out. Great sushi, cheap, quick and easy to pick up - really, isn't that exactly what a sushi bar should offer??

Once you arrive, you will be immediately greeted warmly and happily by one of the Japanese customer service attendants. Even though they are all dressed in pretty kimonos, they all understand spoken English really well, so no problems whatsoever understanding my order there. I happily pulled out $20 for the "2 dishes with rice" deal and was overjoyed to be charged only $15 for three different types of Japanese food. Come on! I got Chicken Teriyaki slices with Teriyaki sauce (make sure you ask to pour heaps extra sauce on, cos they'll initially give you very little sauce), a stick of yummy Yakitori AND a Teriyaki chicken sushi roll AND a juicy tea!). I have one word for you. TERIYAKI. It was so delicious that my entire soul was immersed in my meal. After one bite of chicken teriyaki, I was sold on the $15. No surprise Shogun has been around for a long time, I still remember going back here so often during my high school days. Customers are in constant demand (one come quickly one after the other), and a good range of different Japanese food, not just sushi like some other Japanese places! Shogun is truly a lunch favourite of mine in Rundle Mall, and definitely one of the first destinations I think of for lunch. Depending on how busy the food court gets (and it does get full at lunch hour so get in there early if you can), you ca either take a seat in the Food Court or just ask for takeaway (they don't ask you this, you have to tell them yourself) - Shogun Japanese has "Shotgun SERVICE" (this means "really quick" in Aussie street slang). Shogun is everything you need if you are craving Japanese - it is quite small like every other shop in the Myer Food Court and it's not really a restaurant that you can enter inside, but it is enough if you want a quick meal on the go, and is so affordable. The size of the serves were perfect for me, however for a few extra dollars more you can have two of whatever if you want to double up on something. There have been times where I get two serves of chicken teriyaki because it's soooo good. The biggest negatives: the very little sauce they give you, and how packed the Food Court can get next to Shogun. If you can get in early, you can loudly say "Shotgun Shogun, suckers!" Apart from that, once you get your seat, you're in Teriyaki heaven.

And for those who disagree with me, I respect that, but I'm deeply suspicious of your world view. Despite my intense dislike for the food court as a cultural phenomenon, I *will* dash in and dash back out again if there is something worth my while. And the yakitori in Shogun is most definitely worth my (and your) while. These authentic grilled chicken skewers are seriously delish. That sauce! Among the best, and definitely the best takeaway version of yakitori I've ever had - and cheap too! If you're after something a little more substantial for a snack, these are definitely the go.

But cudos to the Genki people for providing a healthy alternative to bain-marie reheated Chinese food . Visit Genki Roll in Rundle Mall at just about any time of any day and you'll find people 3 or 4 deep at the counter waiting to get their hands on their California Rolls. Despite the crowds the service is quick and most people are in and out in a flash. You can eat your sushi at one of the many tables in the food hall or head back to wherever you came from and enjoy your takeaway there. I'm by no means a Sushi expert but I suspect this is the equivalent of takeaway Sushi and not restaurant quality. Traditional sushi in Japan must be in a whole other league but for the time being I think this sushi rocks and when I'm out shopping in the Mall, its usually my staple diet.

Run by the quietly smiling Michael and his even quieter wife, this is a great oasis in the fashion district of King William Road. It is quite possibly the cheapest sushi and is a little different to most sushi bars as it has a lot of deep fried sushi. I personally love the Age Maki (not sure if my spelling is correct) but it translates to deep fried salmon and cream cheese sushi rolls - divine! They also do a wicked salmon and potato deep fried triangle. This type of sushi sets them apart from most sushi places (sushi for bigger appetites maybe). Sushi and being a bit of a sushi fanatic (Sushi Train and Matsuri being one of my favourites to date) I was sadly let down. The staff were wonderfully upbeat and helpful but the place only takes cash (not credit card).
