Duthy Street Deli - inside is cozy and spacious

Keeping it in the Greek family…read more This classic inner Adelaide suburban corner shop used to house George and his family serving up deli items when every suburb had a reliable deli for the last minute, need it right now milk, ice cream or bread before we had supermarkets open to 9.00pm (yes this is awhile ago). Back then Parkside was a bit dingy, a bit boho and very multicultural - Greek and Italian families predominated. Fast forward 25 years and Parkside has now been gentrified and and is a bit yuppiefied but blessedly Duthy St deli harks back to its deli origins and not just in name only. Vasili our host, has been smoothly operating a very successful cafe here for a number of years. Good service, well trained baristas, efficient chefing on view and a consistent, reliable extremely well presented selection of breakfast and lunch cold and hot items. Shrewdly but thankfully very competitively priced in a locale that could cough up more. Always good and always fresh -congratulations on maintaining the tradition in a slice of slightly out of the way suburbia. PS I do miss the Haigh's dark chocolate buttons though that used to accompany the coffee (I'd be prepared to pay a little more to have the chance to drop one in to create a gooey chocolaty melting moment on top of my latte/cappuccino froth). Ah - those were the days. Sigh!

Especially got a laugh from the visible work 'notice board' reminding wait staff to generally stop being idiots and stay off their phones during service piled amongst other threats. Does explain the faultless service on their part. Food is pricey but utterly amazing, the space is huge and the service is awesome so ruling with an iron fist must be working for them! Coffee was made by who I assume was the owner as he exuded the kind of confidence with a coffee machine only decades could foster. The eggs were perfect, my partners french toast and burger were beautiful and all up it was a great and riotous experience. Will be back!

I would rate Sevenhill as one of the best deli-type stalls in the Central Markets. Named after an…read morearea in the Clare Valley, Sevenhill is an excellent little European delicatessan, stocking a great array of cured meats, sausages, pickles, cheeses, cakes, biscuits and other treats. They are well known for their pickles, sauerkraut, dutch liquorice and smoked speck. A lovely Hungarian boy I used to date insisted Sevenhill had some of the best Eastern European cakes in the markets - think poppy seed strudel kind stuff. This is one of those stalls where half the fun is seeing all these mysterious products you've never tried before. I like to give something new a go every time I come by. This is a great store for diehard eaters of German, Polish, Dutch and Scandinavian food. Keep an eye for kassler chops, capsicum pariser and quark cheese.

Not all of the stalls in the market have a crowd of clients 5 deep waiting to get served. One of…read morethe stalls that goes under the radar is Sevenhill Fine Foods. Located on the 'uncool' side of the market (Grote Street Side), Sevenhill stocks an amazing range of European products from various wursts and sausages to pickles, sauerkraut, cheese and mustards. It really reminds me of 'Wheres Wally' when I look at the produce on offer, as I know the more I look the more bits and pieces I will find that I want to try. Wally still illudes me though!

If you love good quality food, you'll love Norwood Fine Foods…read more They stock really delicious small goods, pates, a huge array of cheese which can be cut to order and lots of other t'riffics - sweet and savoury. All the staff are passion foodies and will happily chat about different products on offer and let you try before you decide. They do an amazing trade at lunch time with their hugely popular baguettes. When I worked at Kent Town, I would drive past a dozen other sandwich places to buy my lunch here. There are 12 choices filled with all the yummy fillings you see in the display. They are made to order (they're pretty quick) so you can add or change any filling you like. Baguettes are around the $8 to $10 mark. Norwood Fine Foods is in the Norwood Mall next to Coles.

Stacked to the rafters with pantry delights (many of them local and South Australian), you'll spot olives, cheese cut to order, dips and so on, as well as gift packs for the food lovers in your life. Personally, I prefer to head down to the Central Markets for my small good needs (cheaper, more variety) but this place is a good second for a local option. They also yummy take away foods, like the baguettes that Rani mentioned. My hot tip: the kranskys here are GOOD. Yummy and made on the spot so they're fresh and good quality, though they don't offer a lot of toppings or chili sauce which makes me a little bit sad.
