I have been having Cynthia cut my hair for a few years and she's amazing. Not only is she kind, funny and beautiful but she cuts hair beautifully! Cynthia takes her time and makes you feel seen and heard when you sit in her chair. She always has great suggestions and understands the type of hair I have. If I can give this salon 0 stars I would. I came here a couple months ago for highlights, and, my hair stylist, Morgan, half assed my hair. I showed her my inspo for the hair I wanted done, and she told me that it was a balayage instead of highlights - mind you I've been dying my hair the same since high school. Every conversation that we shared, it seemed like she was annoyed and didn't want to be there. Fast forward to the end of the appointment, the outside part of my hair, was dyed, but the inside, facing toward my neck where it's barely visible, was completely dark - she did not even dye that part of my head! She then continued to tell me "it's because no one will see it so it's fine." When it came the time to pay, she told me it was $400 on top of the deposit that I paid. Why would I pay ~$500 on hair that was completely half assed?? If you're looking for a new salon, go somewhere else. It's not worth it. read more

This is the WORST salon I have EVER been to. Kien did my hair and when I left I was in tears. I wanted to cut my long hair to to a short style right above my shoulder and I brought a picture of what I wanted. I also wanted BLONDE highlights. This guy cut my hair up to my ears and colored it COPPER RED!! He then pushed $200 worth of product on me and INSISTED on a large tip. I ended up paying over $500 I was in total shock. If you value your hair DO NOT COME HERE! This is the Worst place ever!!! read more

She matched my brown hair like a champ. The color isn't too warm or too cold, and I was in LOVE. She straightened it too, and we both knew the style would hold out awesomely overnight for my date, and it did. ... This rating is for my customer service experience only. I requested an appointment about a month prior to my desired date. Unlike their system says, no one followed up with me and I did not receive confirmation that the appointment was booked. Much to my surprise, about 3 days before the appointment I wanted, I received an email and text message to confirm. Because I didn't hold the time for a month since I never received a confirmation, I wasn't going to be able to keep the appointment. I emailed the salon asking for alternative dates and times. The day before the appointment, Sydney from the salon called me and was pretty upset when I told her that I had canceled via email, and wouldn't be coming to the appointment. Later on, I got a text message saying that if I wanted to rebook, I'd have to pay the late cancellation fee. Sydney and I went back and forth via text messages and she was "sorry if I felt she was rude" which really wasn't an apology. She refused to acknowledge the time stamped email I sent her showing that I sent an email with the appropriate cancellation timeframe, and also refused to acknowledge that the system and employees never confirmed my appointment that I attempted to book a whole month prior. I'm disappointed that I was not able to see one of their stylists that I was so excited about and that she ultimately loses money, because they won't stop pushing the cancellation fee EVEN THOUGH I canceled within the timeframe their policy states. read more

Kien is a true artist, and a masterful one at that. This may sound like a superlative statement, but when I say I've been been coloring my hair professionally - going to salons of all sorts, from barbers to high-end day spas, in multiple coastal cities - and this was a cut above everywhere else. ALL of the talent and expertise, and artistic vision with NONE of the pretension and attitude. The salon has a "Brooklyn cool" vibe and the decor is all understated class in dark wood and mirrors, and the staff were all seeming to handle all COVID-19 precautions and challenges according to local guidelines. It felt warm and inviting and thankfully not in the sense like you just stepped into someone's kitchen with cackling aunties. But I digress. I can't stress enough that you are so worth it - go see Kien and let him work his magic so you can smile and feel amazing. I've had a number of hair transitions throughout the years, and Duran has always been able to make my hair fun, new, refreshed, and exciting. I highly highly recommend Duran for all your hair coloring, cuts and styling needs. Long overdue review. We met with Kien after a long-awaited appointment. We were not impressed with his demeanor. He came off too full of himself, and perhaps it's an earned reputation based on his experience, but speaking for myself and my girlfriend, he was arrogant and shallow. My haircut came out just okay. I was not impressed having to sit and listen through his puffed-up talks. That was not why I came here. I have had better haircuts and styling and client services for only $80. I have been going to umbrella since 2012 and absolutely loved my stylist Samantha. So my earlier review was based on the salon and her - that I wrote in 2015. She unfortunately moved end of last year and I still wanted to continue going to umbrella because of my past experience, which had been nothing but amazing. I went to Aubrea 4-5 times for hair cut and color, and all was good until. I missed an appointment due to a family emergency ( this was the only time in the last 8-9years that I have been going to umbrella that I missed an appointment) I called back 3 days after missing my appointment and apologized, and had called to schedule my appointment I missed. As per their policy you need to pay 50% of the service to the stylist for a no show. I said I agree as it was my fault I will pay the 50%. To that the operator replies that I can escape the fees if I just decide to choose another stylist. I insisted that I will pay the fees and I would not like to do that to anyone for my family emergency and will still come back to Aubrea. The operator puts me on hold and says she will speak with Aubrea and get back to me. She comes back saying that Aubrea says please choose another stylist because she doesn't like the way she has been treated. I just couldn't get it? After coming for 9 years and never missing an appointment if that's the kind of customer service you give its super disappointing. That too to someone who has been loyal all these years. It did not end there. I tried to book an appointment online on their website a few days after at 10pm for a 9am appointment the next day. The website mentioned this appointment is not confirmed so please wait for it to be confirmed by the stylist and you will receive an email. ( Umbrella opens at 9am) i waited until 8:30am and after receiving no confirmation did not leave for the appointment ( it takes me 35 minutes to get there from my house) I get a call at 8:55 am from the stylist saying that he is running ten minutes late. I mentioned that I never received any confirmation so I am not even close to the salon and definitely cannot reach in 5 minutes. He said I need to pay 50% of the service for a no show and that I have a history of no shows . I was so furious, because I am particular about time and have had no no shows in 9 years. So I mentioned that there is no reason for me to do a no show as I want to come in and booked my appointment only last night...and after receiving no confirmation did not drive to the salon. He changed the time for my appointment and we went through with the appointment. Luckily I had the window open on my laptop where umbrella salon msged me ( as a proof that my appointment is not confirmed) and I showed that to him and he apologized at the salon. I'm sorry I don't expect this kind if service. I was so upset and that's the reason I'm typing this long review. To sum it up umbrella you just lost a customer who has been coming to you since 2012. If that's the way you treat customers I don't know how many will be loyal. read more

"You can do whatever you want with my hair!" My hormones made me say it, maybe because I'm turning 39 soon and I wanted to do something different, something crazy. Maybe because I was confident Yanin was going to turn it into something great like always. She is a some kind of a hairstylist educator, afterall, so I trusted her judgment. But then she chopped off three inches off my hair and my trust melted into thin air. Okay, I admit I really liked it after she slathered a bunch of fancy shmancy hair products then blow dried it into a cute bob. But after I washed it the reality set in and I thought, HOLY MOTHER OF GOD! What the heck did she do to my hair?!?!! I was scared to post a pic! I got a few compliments but it's really hard for me to trust people sometimes. They feel like they need to be respectful by saying something nice. Like you see a baby and they say, "Oh how adorable!" And deep inside I'm thinking, Really!?! That's adorable?!?! I don't find that adorable at all. If you think that's adorable, I don't know if I can trust your opinion about my hair. I want real feedback! You know who's keepin' it real?!? Kids! They'll say stuff like, "Mrs. C are you having a bad hair day?" or "Your lipstick is extra bright today," or "Oh no, you're getting pimples." Some of the stuff they say hurts but at least they have motivated me to brush my hair more often, or take it easy on the lipstick, or put some acne gel on my face.The next day, when I opened the classroom door to greet them, I didn't even have to fish for compliments. After their detailed analysis and assessment, they approved my new haircut. So now after a few days, I'm getting over the shock and I'm actually loving the cut. It's easier to wash and style. I discovered Umbrella salon in 2017 and been going there for years..even after I moved to the east bay I remained a loyal customer. However, my recent haircut experience with was very disappointing! The cut was good but my stylist rushed (or I should say almost skipped) the styling part. He just put some gel through the combed curls, and diffused for a few minutes...I couldn't believe I was walking out of this salon with rushed messy styled hair. And I paid over $130. The review is for Duran's hair service for haircut and deep conditioning I took on Apr 17 at 10 am. She was nice as a person and it is sad to leave a negative review. This was the worst 150$ I ever spent on my hair in one go. I explained clearly to Duran that I am going to my sisters wedding and I needed a deep conditioning with a nice haircut. She sdid a b complex treatment that was supposed to last 10 washes. The haircut itself was meh. What was worse ? the deep conditioning didnot even last two days leave alone a hairwash. My hair became a frizzy ball and I had to wash to get back my normal hair. And the hair showed no sign of the 150$ I spent. I am writing this review right after the wedding and it is so infuriating to charge such high dollars and provide this sort of hair service. The 60$ deep conditioning from my regular parlor would last two weeks with 0 maintenance. I wish I was in US and I would go in person and get refund! read more

Due to the fact that I am such a Sharks fan and because I gave into peer pressure for the first time, I decided on a whim (Friday after work) to get teal highlights for the following day - in time for our 7PM game against the Senators. I have never called in sick, I have never cut class, and I have never done anything remotely crazy so when I booked my appointment, my heart was racing a bit. I have never dyed or highlighted my hair. I have zilch makeup skills. The only thing I can do is talk about food, workouts, and sports all day. BTW- parking validation for the San Pedro Square Market garage, not the parking structure outdoors by Erik's Deli. Do not make the same mistake I made. An upscale salon, no wonder I paid a fortune but you know, when it comes to health and beauty, cost isn't a factor to me because one mess up can ruin my appearance for a few weeks or damage my hair. I knew that I made the right choice despite my 2 star review back in August. I did not utilize the discounted service for the mix up, it is because I completely forgot about it. Oh well. I do not have an ounce of regret for coming here. I get to meet Chris. A cool ass guy advising me for my teal needs. I work in a corporate environment so it isn't wise to take it to extreme measures nor show off my tattoos so he suggested what is called, "Peekaboo" highlights. Though I can say w/ confidence that I want more and not just the subtle tones. The process took forever but he explained it is because my hair is healthy, fine/thin, and shiny... never had anything done to it so it is a bit resistant. After almost 2 hours, I felt spontaneous and fun. I loved it! Chris is awesome for many reasons. He showed me which brushing method to use to volumize my hair and he suggested I get so and so cut to give it body. He was also co-parenting as I had Gavin w/ me. By the end, Gavin did not want to leave! He loved Chris! All that was missing was a glass of mimosa. $150 + tip is worth it. More to come. I have to thank my manager for the peer pressure. I moved out of the area and quit my job to focus on my graduate studies, which made me dirt poor and went back down that dark road of cheap Asian salons. No bueno, folks, no bueno. So, I had to come back to Umbrella and it was SO worth the extra moolah. So so so so thankful for Nathan's talent to fix my dead and defeated hair! My hair is alive again with so much movement and LIFE! Just wanted to say thank you again for never failing to do such great work! This review is for Dacia! OMG! She is amazing and if you are looking for a go-to hairstylist or just someone new to help you change up your look, you have to go see Dacia at Umbrella Salon. I've been living in the Bay Area for about 6 years now and was always just really loyal to my hairstylist in Atlanta, but I just felt like it was time to find someone closer to home that I could trust with my hair. I started looking on Yelp to find a salon and/or stylist and pretty soon I came across the glowing reviews Dacia had, so I booked an appointment with her. Going into my appointment, I was pretty nervous because well going to someone new is always nerve racking and then there was the added stress of going for a drastic change. I had been growing my hair out for 2 . years, and I was just ready for a change and wanted to chop it all off. But as soon as I sat down, I was at such ease. Dacia is one of the sweetest people I have ever met. She listened to what I wanted but also gave me her honest opinion on what would look best for me. I have been going to Umbrella salon for the past six years but my stylist moved out and I decided to try a new stylist here. Unfortunately, I had a very disappointing experience in my last visit to umbrella salon. I asked for an ash brown balayage but they did a partial highlight (NOT balayage!) and it turned out brassy with an orange tone (instead of ash or even light brown). I also had a haircut, and the stylist spent less than 5 minutes on my haircut and the result was terrible. I had to do another haircut a few days later to fix the initial one. I am disappointed to learn how unprofessionally they handled her busy schedule with school and did not respect her time or goals. I've been a big fan of Umbrella Salon, but I'm beginning to think I only really love my stylist Samantha. She ended up being sick my second to last appointment, no biggie, they switched me to a very sweet, very friendly stylist as a back up. She seemed a little nervous to do my Balyage and it wasn't as clean as my visits with Samantha were, but the backup stylist gave a great, I mean killer, amazing head massage for the hair wash. My locks ended up looking a little too light after my visit, but nothing too major and overall I was pleased. Unfortunately I had reaction to something (probably stress in my life) and several weeks later my hair started falling out. So while I liked her, I just didn't feel as comfortable going back to her. This last visit I specifically went with someone above Samatha's level since she wasn't available and paid more than usual for his "higher" grade, which turned out to be a really poor experience for me. I highly recommend if you do decide to go with Umbrella, not to go with Jade as your stylist. First I was left waiting for a half hour after coming in the requested 15 late, which happens, but is indicative of a pattern during this visit. He then didn't have my hair profile or know I was even a returning client even though I visit at least once every six months and have been for more than 2 years, which was strange, since the previous stylist had known my profile with no issues. Because my hair is thinner I specifically don't wash it for a couple days before my visits to protect my scalp during the dyeing process but as I unwrapped my hair he cringed brushing it out. Which, as a woman who recently went through hair trauma, just doesn't feel great. Throughout the visit I felt like I was simply a wallet, with a distinct lack of personal service and considering I take a day off of work, was paying over $250, and traveling over an hour to come in to this salon specifically, was really a bummer. And not an experience I'd ever had here before. The stylist had assistants check on me instead of doing it himself, would pause in painting my hair to hug and gab with people who came in, and really didn't make conversation with me until the end. My hair wasn't even blow dried thoroughly, with the care and cute styling I've always received, and instead had a wet neck area. While in store it looked fine brushed out, after I got home I found a huge gaping dark spot at my temple that I'd specifically mentioned I prefer coverage on while he was working. I'd also gotten much heavier blunt highlighting than I'd ever gotten before and it has grown out very badly. It's been less than three months and I haven't worn my hair down in weeks - the color difference is so stark. Definitely not the balyage I asked for. Considering my experience my guess is that he colored it differently as a way to bring me back sooner since it's so noticeable. I was going to try and set up one last appointment, but the experience left such a sour feeling with me that though I really like this salon, and the owner did reach out to me to try and make things right, I feel I'm too far away to try again. I do want to say that it really says a lot about the hairstylist (who is no longer with Umbrella but apparently is on Yelp) that he found the time to rate my review Funny - I sincerely hope no one ever makes him feel like he made me feel, and then laughs about it afterward. read more

The umbrella salon was everything I expected and more. I loved the online feature to book appointments, saved me so much time. The front desk staff were very pleasant! They greeted me with a warm smile, checked me in and offered me a beverage. Which really helped my nerves because I'm naturally a nervous person. He gave me two suggestions; a safe look or a whole new look. He talked me threw the whole process and in the end I told him to do whatever with me. His assistant had the hands of an angel. I just wanted to sit there all day while she messaged my scalp. She was so nice the whole time. His name is Christian but it might as well be Jesus because I am 1000% serious, when I say Christian saved my soul ! I'm not the best conversationalist but he kept it following and he even laughed at my lame jokes. I would highly recommend him for clients who are a bit on the reserved side but are looking for someone to give great advice. For sure I left with more confidence than when I came in. This is a really nice place, the only place I go to because my hair is so thick and hard to deal with. Your experience depends on who you have working on your hair. The last time I got a really nice guy, did a wonderful job on my hair, and was really friendly. The time before that I kinda got pretty woman'd. The stylist took me to the chair, then kneeled down in front on me, looked at me with awkward and sad eyes and literally said "hey, so I don't know if anyone has told you, but this haircut is $XXX so it's more on the expensive side." I was flabbergasted and responded with "oh yea, I know, I've been coming here for like ten years, sorry I don't usually look like this..." and started making excuses for my appearance, as if I looked like I couldn't afford it. I shouldn't have done that, and she definitely was unprofessional. To top it off, her 'expensive' haircut was the worst one I ever had there. read more

This is my long overdue review for Umbrella Salon, I came to Umbrella looking to get my hair professionally done (which I haven't done before). I was interested because of a particular stylist's (whom I won't name) instagram. I thought her work was beautiful! So I decided to book with her. During my consultation appointment I explained to the stylist on what I wanted to do with my hair, I wanted to cut my hair shorter (unfortunately the haircut was $100..) and I even showed her inspiration pictures that was HER work. I had very high hopes.. I've done about 3 sessions at this salon and I highly regret it, each session STILL left my hair orange and brassy. Each session was also about $320-$360. As for my experience with my stylist, most of the time she had her assistant work on my hair, as she would assistant other customers she had. I felt very inattentive, I'm paying for your service. I understand that you teach your assistants very hands on, but wouldn't it make sense if you worked on my hair longer than your assistant?? My haircut was also very uneven, and you can tell in the before pictures. My balayage wasn't even a balayage lol, it was very uneven and very noticeable. My stylist didn't even show me what products to use to maintain my hair. After my 3rd session at Umbrella, I felt very unsatisfied. My hair still looked the same as the first appointment and no where close to my inspiration picture. My long overdue review is for Aubrea. I've been going to Aubrea for my haircuts the last few years and she has never let me down. She's great to talk to, honest, very down to earth and knowledgeable about hair. She really listens to what you want and works with you. I can't say enough about Aubrea!
