Came here last night to give my mom a send off. She is heading to Madrid on business for 3 months. We were a group of 7. We had made reservations. Our waitress Iss was awesome. Very friendly and helpful. She gave some nice recommendations for food and beer. You could tell she enjoys her job. We ordered several dishes to share. We got the edamame hummus. This was interesting. We also had the Spring Rolls, Japanese Fried Rice, Midori Beef Noodles, Crazy Roll, Fujimori Roll, Spicy Tuna Roll, and Eel with Avocado Roll. My dad also got a White Tuna Sashimi. Everything was a hit, especially the Fujimori Roll (server recommended) and the Eel with Avocado Roll. The Midori Noodles (server recommended) also stood out. They don't have a kids menu, but our server suggested the tonkatsu with white rice as a popular kids favorite. She was right. Our son liked it. Overall, a great experience once again At Umai, made even better thanks to Isa. read more

This is hands down my favorite Japanese restaurant in PR. It is a small place, only 5 tables (for two people) inside. But there are more table outside. It is a great place for a date, except on Fridays. It is crazy full on Fridays. In fact, every restaurant in Galeria Suchville is packed on Fridays. They do take reservations. We had the pork dumplings, edamame, sushi scallops tostones, grilled octopus, short ribs steamed buns, crunchy roll, and the Umai Ramen. Everything was good. The best were the octopus, steamed buns, and the scallops tostones. I could have ordered another round of them. The crunchy roll was decent. I'm sure they have better options. Next time. The ramen was also good but the short ribs took over and overpowered the other flavors. It didn't taste like ramen. It was too Puerto Rican. In addition to the food, the sake was excellent. And the service was the cherry on top. Gabriella, our waitress, was awesome. She elevated the experience. We are definitely returning, hopefully sooner than later. read more

I loved the creativity and unique selection of rolls at Umai. Their new Paseo Caribe spot is so chic. Service was pretty good considering we were there on a busy Friday night. I started out with the miso soup and shared a seaweed salad. The salad was great but the miso soup was horribly salty. I never send things back but I had to. The server responded "miso soup is supposed to be salty". I was so close to insisting he actually try it. It was hard to swallow! Anyways, the taste and quality of the sushi rolls we ordered after made up for the miso mishap. The Sake and Tokyo rolls were absolutely delicious. I loved that we could order half rolls, so we could try a wider variety. They've got so many tempting options it was hard to decide what to get! I didn't care for the "pegaíto" roll although I did appreciate the idea of mixing some Puerto Rican flavors in there. They just didn't work for me. Overall, it was a great experience. Prices were reasonable but the Paseo Caribe parking was kind of steep. read more

currently eating at this spot and having the worst time. not only did i have to wait for about 40 min to a staff that would barely listen to me even ordering a table, but it took another 30 minutes to even get asked my drinks, another 30 minutes to get the drinks and etc etc. Currently its been who knows how long and the food (we're a 4 person party by the way) is coming out one by one. It's gotten to a time where some of the people have finished eating all their food, and some of them havent received it. this is now how you do service and frankly, this restaurant has made me feel forgotten about. Let's hope the sushi's good whenever i finally get it!! read more

It was a nice environment, but the sushi was not authentic, the nigiri was obviously not made by a professional sushi chef, the fish was thin and cut pretty poorly and the rice was decent. The place has a decent price but the sushi isn't really sushi it's like a decent try but more like decent raw fish on rice. The sake selection is ok but literally every Chinese restaurant in the area has the same sake. They also gave me some old ginger and very little of it. The food takes a bit to roll out even though it's not very full. The sushi rolls my friends had were nice in looks but with a closer inspection they basically all just had imitation crab. In a nice place like this I would expect them to use real crab. The waitress was nice. But for a "Japanese" restaurant, it does not make the bar. read more

Third time at Umai since arriving in P.R. Food is very, very good. Mesero service great. Cool, clean, contemporary and comfortable seating inside, but sitting outside is where it's at on the island! Outside feels safe and fun with boutique style businesses close enough for my wife to window shop in between ordering. Only hang-up is parking, which can be a put off-requiring to park in the underground parking if all the surface spots in front of the stores are full.
